To not like holidays?

Just come back from a week away.
Had a nice time, but by day 4 I was ready to come home and tbh, I am always homesick by midweek whenever I’ve gone away.
I mean I had a nice time, and the weather was lovely, but I just want my home comforts back, my own bed, my own space, my comfy sofa.
Plus holidays are sooo expensive, and it was a “cheap” holiday (1.5k for 5 of us). I just think of everything else I could spend that amount of money on that would last way longer than a week.
now I’ve been home for just 3 hours and I’m already on the second load of washing. This is all I will be doing tomorrow as well - endless washing. And all the unpacking too. I just don’t enjoy it. But dh loves travelling and holidays and it’s just the done thing isn’t it? Having a weeks summer holiday. Surely I can’t be the only one who doesn’t really enjoy going away.

YABU - I love holidays. You’re a freak
YANBU - You are not alone - I don’t enjoy get the fuss either

Woops pressed enter.

For me it makes a big difference what I'm doing on holiday as to how happy I am. I enjoy active holidays. So a cycle tour or a few weeks hiking or going climbing or mountaineering I'm happiest in life doing that.

But a week in a resort sitting by a pool I would find really difficult, in that I'd lack stimulation. And just generally struggle to not be bored, which sounds bad but atleast i know what I'm working with in myself.

Maybe if you can find something you enjoy doing on holiday so the enjoyment will outweigh the chores.
:)

The washing at the end is always interesting!
I went on holiday once where the cottage had a washing machine so I actually went home without much washing to do! That was nice.

Maybe you could also benefit from a trip on your own. Even if you don't have much money, this is possible. My friend cycled along the coast of Cornwall and just wild camped.

Or you could go and stay with a friend or relative.

Camping can be quite cheap as well.

Or two nights staying at hostels and going between them and exploring is nice :)

I’m sorry you feel I am being ungrateful and tbf, you are right and I do sound like an entitled cow (oh whoa is me having to go on a holiday I don’t really enjoy). I do know I need to check my privilege as I am blessed that I do have the option to go on holiday which I know many people don’t. However, being a mainly middle-class forum, I thought it would be ok to ask if there are others who don’t enjoy holidays that much, because society puts such importance on loving “travel” that you kinda feel like a bit of a oddball and a freak for not enjoying it much. I’m glad to hear I’m not alone in feeling this.

Although as for your comment on dedicated family time - I’m very blessed that, as a teacher, I am lucky to get lots of time with my children during the holidays, where we can do plenty of days out together. I just don’t see the point in spending thousands of pounds just to be able to do this just in a different country

I’m agoraphobic so can’t go on ‘holidays’ as such but I didn’t read your post as ungrateful or entitled at all! I would love to be able to go and especially as my 11 month old grows I just know I’m going to miss out on those experiences and it breaks my heart, but I can go a few places away from home and so any ‘holidays’ we have will likely be long weekends in my safe zone (no more than 2-3hours from home)

purplehair1 · 07/06/2023 07:47

The best thing about holidays is the memories you make with your kids/loved ones. I would feel a week is almost too short to allow you to relax into it and be a proper rest. Spending £1500 on ‘something else random’ doesn’t give you memories of happy times and quality bonding time with your kids away from work and school.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 07/06/2023 07:54

We're lucky enough to be going abroad for 3 weeks in the summer.Cannot wait.No housework, cooking or routines.

Stormyweathr · 07/06/2023 15:53

I loved having a washer drier in a bungalow I rented abroad a couple of years ago I literally put my washing on a wash/dry cycle daily before I went out and came back from holiday with a case full of clean clothes

i can’t believe in this day and age nobody has thought of setting up a dry cleaning service for holiday makers were you can drop all your holiday washing off a couple of days before flying home and pick up all washed and dry before flying home. On a two week holiday abroad in a hotel I would certainly pay a external company to do this for me before returning home

Ginmonkeyagain · 07/06/2023 16:10

Plenty of higher end hotels have a laundry service.

starrynight009 · 07/06/2023 16:17

I think everyone is different when it comes to holidays and everyone likes doing different things whilst on holidays. I did a lot of traveling in my 20s and early 30s and loved it. It was my thing. I still love traveling now I'm a mum but I tend to stick a little closer to home and go to safer places. But I'm a very out and about person. If someone took me on a holiday and I had to sit by the pool or sit by the beach I'd be bored and just want to go home. My old boss told me that holidays were just childcare in a different location with less stuff. So I don't think he was a fan haha The packing does suck though, even if you like holidays that part is rubbish.

But yes, sorry, I am a crazy holiday person. Camping, canal boats, cottages, hotels, cities, countryside, beaches, you name it I want to do it or have done it. I love exploring new places and having a time out from life. I love finding cheap holiday bargains as well which I appreciate will become harder now my youngest is starting school this year. I have a dream of owning a campervan one day and just packing up and going away for weekends whenever we feel like it.

bellalou1234 · 03/06/2023 18:33

I'm the same I can't relax and worry about home. I've had the odd holiday where I've wanted to stay longer. But on the while I'm ready to leave after a few days

@bellalou1234

what’s do you worry about?

LuckySantangelo35 · 07/06/2023 18:07

Hairbrushhandle · 04/06/2023 21:22

If this was me I'd be worrying about the journey to the airport, what happens if we get a flat tyre, the roads are blocked, then the airport, what happens if I suddenly feel ill and have to sit on a flight with the runs or vomiting, then I'll assume the airline will lose the bags, the hotel will be in the midst of building works, the pool will give us a bout of noro or the food at the buffet will make us sick, there won't be enough to do, I'll forgot to pack something vital, it will rain constantly, there will be a conference at the hotel which will make the entire stay corporate and miserable etc etc.

I admire people who don't have this running in their head all the time.

@Hairbrushhandle

u need to chill out!

Ceebeegee · 07/06/2023 18:16

I don't like holidays either.
I'd rather have a couple of night away somewhere. Fill the couple of days, but less hassle.
I hate the expense (would rather plough my money into my home or hobbies ) hate the hassle of finding kennels, then going to the airport , parking , queuing , waiting for the transfers , the pressure of filling each day to make it worth while, the transfer back to airport , queuing starts all over again. Unpacking , washing etc. Nah . A weekend bag and a couple of nights is max for enjoyment for us.

LuckySantangelo35 · 07/06/2023 18:32

All those people who are saying they would much rather be at home….
why?! You’re home day after day. This has especially been the case with the pandemic. Even if you have the most lovely home surely you want a change of scene sometimes? And you have the rubbish uk weather at home which lets face it, most of us need a break from?! And you can experience other cultures etc when on holiday which is fab - aren’t you interested in doing that?
no judgment, just genuinely curious!

Jewel1968 · 07/06/2023 19:17

I understand. I think you make some points a lot of people can relate to. For me I find holidays a bit false (haven't been on holiday for a few years due to financial reasons) in that you go to a place where you dip your toe into their culture. It a kinda uneasy contract between tourist and local. I grew up in a part of the world which attracted lots of tourists and there was an uneasy relationship. We wanted their custom but found them irritating.

I have friends that live in parts of Europe that are holiday destinations for many. I like visiting them because I feel I get a bit more of an understanding of the culture etc... through my friends.

I am also conscious of carbon footprint so not keen on mega travel.

Charliechopper · 07/06/2023 19:24

YANBU if this is how you feel. Everyone is different, for us family holiday’s is very important. It’s our time to chill and not worry about everyday chores, work, school etc. it’s our time to be 100% together. We have 1 DS who is 11 and we love giving him the experience to travel, enjoy different culture, different cuisine, it’s a life experience for him. I too work in a school so get the holidays off but for me, it’s just seems a bit samey in the holidays if we don’t go away. Everyone is different and you have to do what suits you and your family, you are not wrong for thinking this way 😃 yes the packing, unpacking, washing and all that jazz is a ball ache but I don’t think about that when I am away 😂

I just tip it all out of the suitcases into a bin bag when I get home and take it to the laundrette for a service wash. Pick up next day all clean and folded. So much easier than dong multiple loads, esp in winter

Oh god! Poor you! What was the allergy to?

we had hellish holiday last year when Dh managed to tear his cornea in half and we went nowhere other than the ophthalmic hospital multiple times ( thank fuck we were in a medical tourism ( lasik) hotspot) . The dc whined constantly for screens.

Beachywave · 07/06/2023 19:51

YABVVVVU - I've been away for a month before and still didn't want to come back!

BastetsWhiskers · 07/06/2023 20:04

@LadyLolaRuben oh no, safe speed home and recovery.

OP that's fine if you don't enjoy your current holidays, perhaps look into alternatives?

I only take mini breaks at present, I'm lucky in that a friend has a house by the beach, and I book into a hotel every few months when I want to be completely on my own.

Thank you Ive had a severe reaction to mosquito bites, I'm blistered all over and feel achy. Im using hydrocortisone cream and taking antihistamine tablets. My face was swollen for two days. I'm planning on bandaging myself up and using make up to get myself presentable for return journey.

Personally I love holidays. I love everything from shopping around for a good deal, planning where to go and what to do, to doing the packing, people watching whilst I travel, exploring a new area, eating new things and staying somewhere different.

My husband hates all these things. He hates shopping and researching, he hates packing, he hates the actual travelling and hates sleeping in a bed that’s not our own. He does not enjoy holidays one bit but tolerates them for the benefit of the whole family. We compromise by making our holidays shorter, 5 days is his max.

If, like my husband, you don’t like any of the things associated with planning and going on holiday, it’s not surprising or unreasonable that you don’t like holidays!

Ilovedogs389 · 08/06/2023 09:22

I used to love holidays before we had kids, and I still love holidays now ...in the UK.
But going abroad now I feel very overwhelmed. Everything is on me. Thinking of absolutely everything we need to take. Packing. Organising the dogs boarding. Travel insurances, airport Hotel, visas etc, it is all me. Husband does nothing towards it. I used to love the countdown to a holiday but we haven't had a successful one since before covid. We had our florida holiday cancelled 2 weeks before when covid hit, then no travel for ages. Then we had to do tests etc 24 hours before and the stress for me was so great it made me ill.
My daughter seems to always get poorly when we are away which is no fun for her or the rest of us. And myself or my my husband always end up with a bad stomach.
I absolutely hate the travelling part of it and I'm terrified of flying so my anxiety is through the roof. We go to Spain in 6 weeks and I'm already dreading it

Pinkchilli · 08/06/2023 14:20

I thought I was the only person who feels this! Seems everyone loves holidays. I don’t really get paying a fortune to stay somewhere really basic. I’m not a fan of holidays and get bad anxiety. Miss my home comforts. Try to power through for the kids and put a happy face on but really it’s not my idea of fun. Have enjoyed one or two amazing holidays in my life but always happy to get home. Holidays with kids are just same stuff different location which is mega stressful abroad with pools, marble tiles etc 🤪 feel less of a social pariah now

we went to a eurocamp in France and used Tesco Clubcard points to pay for it. Self-catering, and we drove down, but that also included a trip to Disneyland. But I get homesick during all holidays regardless where they are - caravan, camping, villa, hotel…. It’s just the same as home but with (hopefully) better weather. Just packing to go, getting up stupidly early to travel, spending a crazy ton of money, then packaging again to come home and just wash, wash and wash etc. and whilst there just doing they same sort of thing we could be doing at home - chilling by the beach, museums, theme parks, golf etc - all available locally to where we live. Just doing it abroad.
even if we have a villa with washing facilities, I still come home and re-wash. The only advantage is I only have to pack for 3/4days as opposed to 8, so there’s less to do when home.

Its just the same as home? You're obviously not choosing the right holidays. I don't have a swimming pool in my back garden sadly.

Ginmonkeyagain · 08/06/2023 15:07

For me holidays are about experiencing somewhere different. We are going to Perpignan next month - a lovely historic French city near the Spanish border - we plan to make day trips to various small towns and beaches and then work our way home via a fishing town on the Med that is hotsing a music fesitival on the beach.

Lots of food, history, bars, experiences and sights we don't get at home in suburban London.
