The problem with Brexit is we didn't Brexit hard enough

The EU itself was just the start.

But there are still more institutions which still influence our laws and make it impossible to actually achieve "taking back control".

If anything, we've left the trading bloc (which had economic benefits) but stayed in many of the legal institutions (which retain control over us).

So which body do we leave next - the ECHR? The ECJ? Keenly awaiting responses 😘

Oh and those who said 'well if you don't like it move elsewhere' - if only it were that simple- we actually did so and it really wasn't that simple , especially if you work for yourself- it's beauracratic to do so, means holding large balances in some countries and incredibly costly if you need to keep coming back to UK for work reasons.

Thelnebriati · 01/06/2023 11:40

Quick question for Brexiters. When the next big issue comes up, are you going to do due diligence and listen to others before you vote? Or will you shout 'project fear it will all be fine this is fine' all over again?

midgemadgemodge · 01/06/2023 11:42

I guess the only solution is to chisel the uk off the planet and float us all in space away from anyone we might have to share the current planet with

Then we could have our own rules and freedom

Lack of oxygen might be a problem for those of us with brains to support

There's coherent well thought out disagreements and there's a complete inability to define what Brexit people voted for. And there were plenty of racists voted for Brexit for that reason. Some of them spat I'm my DILs face and told her she had to fuck off home now we'd voted leave.

And I got spat at, name called and alls orts hen 9/11 happened and then the tube bombings in London. Racists are just racists irrespective of which way they voted.

And? 2 wrongs don't make a right. Or dies tour experience of racism mean it's OK for other people to experience it?

My DDs got told to fuck off back to where they were born (Cambridge, if anyone is interested). There was a thread in which Leave voters advocated forcible repatriation of EU nationals living here, including repossessing their houses without recompense. Leavers not nasty? Don't make me fucking laugh.

Is this children? If so, that’s vile. Rather too many people asked dh when he’d be leaving. One or 2 weren’t joking. We are both dual now.

No I didnt' say that. I am just pointing out racists will always be racist and its not based on how they vote or do something.

But Britain doesn't follow the rules established by the EU and didn't during the membership either. In the EU countries you can't get dispensation after dispensation to let out sewer water in the river but it happened several hundred thousand times in Britain in 2021. (Do NOT go wild swimming. )

In the EU countries there are not only rules stating several products that are illegal to put in food, they also check if the companies comply. You wouldn't have had the meat scandal if Britain had done the same. FFS: You don't even have a law forbidding companies from selling wall paper with arsenic in them so in theory you could end up with toxic houses like in the Victorian era again.

In the EU countries you can't just fire people just like that and you can't get away with baseless accusations about fraud which continue even after it is revealed that the computer programme had errors like in the British post office scandal.

In the EU countries it is not the royal and aristocratic families that own the most of the country and use this power to screw over the rest of the population.

In the EU countries they are not governed by cleptocracies.

So based on what you just said, being in or out didn't matter anyway cos if we didn't follow the rules when we were in and we don't now we are out - there is no difference

And which way do you think racists were more likely to vote. I have the misfortune of knowing a few through work or hobbies and every single one of them voted Leave. I'm sure a few didn't and not all leave voters are racist but racists were far more likely to vote leave.

Fimofriend · 01/06/2023 12:21

@Dreamstate Exactly. The main results from Brexit is that there has been an exodus of foreign academics, it is more difficult to get staff and there are more trade barriers. But hey ho ...... the new passports will all be blue. So ... yeah... Result!

WTO was suggested at one point a couple of years ago. Once we’ve done that , there’s only the planet left to leave.

Vallmo47 · 01/06/2023 12:23

Yes yes OP… 😂
Currently revising to become a British citizen so that after 20+ years my vote actually counts. If Europeans with a brain cell had been allowed to vote in referendum we’d never be in this shitstorm. The referendum of 2016 proved majority of people here are stupid unfortunately. Shame we all have to live with the consequences.

Crikeyalmighty · 01/06/2023 12:26

Not all leave voters were racist but every racist I know voted leave- so the schadenfreude in me can't help but laugh slightly manically that the government now (realising there are huge shortages of workers in some sectors)are letting in vast amounts of developing country immigration- legally (not via the boats) so long as it's couples and families it seems and certainly not all nurses, brain surgeons or Astro physicists. Those seeking immigration from places like Australia, EU, Canada etc are no longer that fussed it seems - as better options out there.

Hmmm - having observed sewerage in the sea this weekend- south coast - I can only say bring back EU standards asap. UK is currently like the Wild West .

Is it true that more shit's been dumped in the sea etc since Brexit? I thought it was pretty common during our EU membership too but I may be mistaken.
In or out of the EU, it needs sorting out.

Daftasabroom · 01/06/2023 13:02

It's strange how those who think FPTP is good is the absolute minority who ordinarily gain by it.

We need a new voting system.

And my response was to another poster who said leaver votes are racist. They didn't say some voters were. You cannot brand every leave voter a racist.

LessonsInPhysics · 01/06/2023 13:17

Dreamstate · 01/06/2023 10:53

So now those people are racist.....you cannot say that they are all racist. You do not know their reason for voting. I know some people who voted for leave heir reason weren't racist reasons. They weren't doing it for greedy reasons either. They are not ignorant, they made a decision based on the research they did not just based on what was said in the media.

Like I said in decisions like this and like most policy changes there are winners and losers. It doesn't mean its right to be nasty and call people names or label them racist etc.

dreamstate - what were the reasons for the people that you know?
I know some leavers who are not racist (I also know some remainers who are) but I don't know a single leave voter who did decent research and whose reason still stands up today as a good reason.

I don't name call leavers but I do find it frustrating that they don't realise that the reason people want to is because it really hasn't worked out well.

Two of them worked in the EU so were on the 'inside', they didn't like the wastage of money and the bureaucracy and the way some other countries were 'bullied' when it wasn't in the best interest of the citizens of that country but all in the name of the love of the EU right because being a member state means countries lost some autonomy and decision making that can act as a dis benefit.

It's been shit for year (pardon the pun) as our Victorian infrastructure cant cope and we have a larger population now. It has been like it for years even when we was in the EU. It is a bad situation, but not sure why it is used as a EU beacon of greatness when we was in the EU and spewing it out, the EU did not do a thing.

Dreamstate · 01/06/2023 13:28

It contributed but isn't the sole reason, a large part of inflation has been driven from consequences of a pandemic and locking down the world and then sanctioning russia as they bomb another country

khw666 · 01/06/2023 13:38

Also most people who live near me would not even know we'd had Brexit if you didnt tell them. Ask most of them and they've not got a clue.

This will obviously make some people sigh with relief and others be extremely frustrated depending on whether you are a remain or leaver.

Which begs the question what was the point?

It also begs another question: why should we rejoin (if the EU agreed to it - maybe our billions pumped in may help eh 😁) but what would we gain?

I'm talking about folk who live near me. Normal salt of the earth, not rich people who employ nannies at cheap rates. What would joining the EU do for normal everyday working class folk? Because we hear a lot of privileged people moan they cannot live in an EU country for over 90 days or their kids cant go skiing and work in the chalet and I know that is annoying, but your ordinary josephine like me could never do that anyway and there's loads of us in the UK.

Would it make lives better or worse or stay the same? I dont think I see much difference in my life either way.
