The problem with Brexit is we didn't Brexit hard enough

The EU itself was just the start.

But there are still more institutions which still influence our laws and make it impossible to actually achieve "taking back control".

If anything, we've left the trading bloc (which had economic benefits) but stayed in many of the legal institutions (which retain control over us).

So which body do we leave next - the ECHR? The ECJ? Keenly awaiting responses 😘

The 'morons' you refer to would be most of the people in the UK. Perhaps your GP, your neighbours, even family and friends.

We had a referendum you see and by voting in it you accepted it as valid.

Also it must have escaped your notice that we elected the Tories to run the country on purpose. It's not a lottery or a dictatorship. We have this voting thing here and every citizen gets to choose.

If you're unhappy with the government you should vote for another one. Not whine that some other country should be allowed to override our choices.

Also <yawn>

Doesn't matter how many people believe it it can still be wrong and ignorant. It doesn't matter how many degrees or how many years of life experience a person has they can still be wrong and ignorant.

It was a real eye opener to see just how many people in my local community were actually ignorant and some even racist in the lead up to and following the referendum. Far more that I thought, even some family and friends who I didn't think held these views. The fact that these people surround me doesn't make them any loss wrong, ignorant or indeed bigoted.

I suspect the person you are replying to is engaged in the democratic process and is voting at every opportunity for alternative political parties to the Tories. Just as I am doing. The idea that we are not and that is why we have a Tory government fucking things up is ridiculous.

The EU is not "some other country" it is an international economic bloc signed up to freely by all its member states. Anyway, we have left now, but the way you brexiteers are acting it is almost as if you believe we are still members. Accusing others of whining when you are the ones complaining that brexit isn't working cos we haven't "done it properly" is quite ironic.

I guess this is probably how the morons who voted to leave would see things. It seems to me though, that the only thing standing in the way of the Tories stripping away all of my rights is EU legislation.

100% This!

RedToothBrush · 01/06/2023 09:44

I see someone is testing the water for reactions after the possibility of another ref about the echr was mooted in the press a few days back.

My answer is simply no.

I guess you're saying we're a country of morons then, well I guess, ok fair, we aren't exactly swimming in glory right now are we! Swimming in sewage maybe, but not glory 😄

Brexiteers were famous for saying "if you don't like this country you're free to move elsewhere" which was somewhat ironic considering they were the one's who were campaigning to change the very nature of our way of life.

Not content with turning the country into a laughing stock and making 95% of us poorer they now seem to want to grind the UK into the dust and ensure the population are nothing more than serfs at the beck and call of the elite (which is an odd goal considering most brexiteers will fall into serf category but maybe they genuinely yearn for a return to workhouses and cholera?±).

I really wish they'd take their own advice and leave if they're not happy instead of trying to ruin this country even more than they already have.

And the fact that Brexit has made it more difficult to move to Europe.

MasterBeth · 01/06/2023 09:53

Brexit isn't Brexit until we have left the EU, the Single Market, the European Customs Union, the ECJ, ECHR, the Champions League, the Euromillions, Europol, the European land mass, European weather systems and Eurovision.

Why are we letting unelected European juries tell us which pop songs are the best? Britain has the best pop songs in the world, as the world universally agreed with until we joined the Common Market. Co-incidence?

I'm assuming you are one of them as you don't seem to understand how the FPTP system works, that the leave vote was 52-48 in favour after a leave campaign that was proved to be full of lies and SM manipulation and that I probably didn't vote for brexit or the tories given my opinions on here. But leavers tend to lack critical thinking skills and brain power so no suprise really that these things need to be pointed out.

Paperbagsaremine · 01/06/2023 09:59

I'm happy to hear about specific examples of issues and brainstorm solutions - which might include withdrawing from specified international organisations or conventions.

If this isn't a reverse, feel free to fire away, OP.

But we do have to be careful not to throw out the baby with the bathwater ...

Why do you have to resort to being nasty and calling people morons? You could of easily said what you needed to be removing that word. Its really quite typical behaviour that we see towards people who voted to leave along with calling them stupid and not intelligent enough. You rarely see this nastiness and nasty words said about those who voted to remain

People who voted to remain have been called traitors, anti-democrats, enemies of the people, accused of betrayal and worse.

Do you think that might be because of the negative effect voting leave has had on a huge number of peoples lives? But unrealistic to expect those who’ve had these changes inflicted on them to be all hearts and cuddles, especially when the next target is the ECHR.

And IF I was a leave voter I would think that remaining would be a negative but I wouldn't go to a forum and call them morons. You can disagree about something without being nasty.

BiancaBlank · 01/06/2023 10:27

OP is just teasing. We all know how Brexit threads go on Mumsnet!

AxolotlOnions · 01/06/2023 10:34

Even North Korea has allies and trading partners, they send food and money for a small selection of the elite, North Korea sends human slaves. Is that the Brexit you are aiming for? I can see why you'd need to get rid of the ECHR.

Comtesse · 01/06/2023 10:36

Because I am still fucking furious that a bunch of ignorant/racist/greedy people took away mine and my daughter's right to access the EU. This has directly affected my business and my daughter's ambitions to study in Europe. So yes, I will call anyone who voted leave a moron, no matter who they are. And FYI, I have seen far, far worse from brexiters to remainers, the level of vicious toxic insults and crowing was off the scale.

So now those people are racist.....you cannot say that they are all racist. You do not know their reason for voting. I know some people who voted for leave heir reason weren't racist reasons. They weren't doing it for greedy reasons either. They are not ignorant, they made a decision based on the research they did not just based on what was said in the media.

Like I said in decisions like this and like most policy changes there are winners and losers. It doesn't mean its right to be nasty and call people names or label them racist etc.

NYE2023 · 01/06/2023 10:55

@Middlelanehogger So the answer is to dig even deeper into the hole that you and your fellow Brexiteers have dug for us . You voted for an ideal but with no real implementation plan then effectively blame the poor outcome on other institutions, whilst acknowledging the economic downsides. Removing ourselves from wider organisations that effectively protect normal people is beyond stupid . please have a word with yourself . You have already taken so much from ours and our kids future .

I didn't say it didn't happen, however lately and in particular this one its the usual nastiness towards those who voted leave - that's what I have observed. This thread proves it, straight away a nasty comment made.

Is that what you teach your children, that if someone disagrees with you or has a different opinion you call them morons etc.
