To think Phillip schofield scandal is homophobia?

ivfregret · 01/06/2023 00:00

Have I missed something in that the guy Philip had the affair with was not a minor?

He was a minor when they met, as was Cheryl Cole and Liam Payne for example and no one has anything bad to say about that relationship.

I'm not sticking up for Philip and really dislike him, and also think even if the runner was above the age of consent is most definitely questionable behaviour but I can't help think of it was a heterosexual affair it would not be treated in the same way?

Just seen a clip with him saying ‘I know how Caroline flack felt’, is absolutely disgusting.

Just like when he stopped the rumours coming out with ‘I am gay. Aren’t I brave and wonderful’ as distraction, he is now using someone else to say ‘if I kill my self it’s the media’s fault’ to try and stop people asking question.

There was no need to bring her into it. I am pretty appalled they showed that to be honest.

safetyfreak · 02/06/2023 13:00

Watching the whole interview, I find him chilling. He is very media savvy, I am sure he practiced those mental health speeches infront of the mirror.

He is covering for ITV and Holly, to not damage their careers further.

However, I still dont get the big fuss? the boy was at a legal age. Yes sack Phill but all this media outcry...

I disagree to a point. There is nothing wrong with saying that the media onslaught is making you feel suicidal. Maybe mentioning CF was a step too far as it does come over as emotional blackmail- "Back off or I might kill myself."

Not sure that's fair.

They evidently had to stop the 'takes' a few times so he could gather his composure, was shaking and vaping off camera.

AR said last night on BBC news that it was a very fine line between interviewing someone struggling with their mental health and asking relevant questions that didn't push them over the edge.

changedforanswer · 02/06/2023 13:09

He's a grown adult and obviously wanted to do the interview (s). He comes over and shifty and out for his own ends. Remember the 'I'm so brave' rubbish when he cheated on his wife wife another person (an 18 year old boy it transpires) now it's all damage limitation for his career and it appears nothing is low enough not to mention.

What about a very young vulnerable young man, originally boy befriended by PS. RemeMber him. The cheated on wife. With PS it's all about HIM

I am confused.

I didn’t say what he should or shouldn’t say. There’s no need to being someone else’s name in to it. It IS emotional blackmail.

So not sure which bit you disagree with tbh.

But also, I don’t like the way he has cast his daughters in the role of his protectors. ‘They are guarding me’, ‘if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be here’ ‘they won’t let me out of their sight’

But then I don’t even like how he spoke about the young man in question. ‘We were just mates’, ‘didn’t have feelings’. I know plenty of gay men, they don’t shag their mates.

and saying there’s wasn’t an abuse of power, because they were just mates who shag. Doesn’t even make sense.

PrimalOwl10 · 02/06/2023 13:26

The man is gaslighting when he's giving the interview its all about him, what he's lost, no awareness for the damage caused to his family, to mm, his colleagues. The fact several people have spoken about mm having a breakdown who considered to be inlove with Philip and got casted aside. Where is the concern for his mental health?

He was clearly groomed by him offered him a job in TV, took an inexperienced teenager out for dates and back to his shag pad. I don't believe it was just 6/7 times. He's minisming, it was some fun on the side until Philip got sick and casted him aside.

What 50 year snap chats 14 year olds. I suspect more will come out. I think its disgusting he's using suicide as a veil threat. His actions have consequences. I hope the police do a full investigation.

I'm not sure why you quoted my post to make your out of context to it remarks.

I don't wish suicide as an option on anyone, regardless of what they ought to have known and ought to have done. I am hardly a PS sympathiser, though.

Do you think I am encouraging suicide????????

GreenPinkBlue · 02/06/2023 13:39

100% @PrimalOwl10
Philip comes across as utterly manipulative.

That’s because abuse of young girls has for some unknown reason become normalised. It’s a disgrace in our society, they are the ones being wronged not PS.

Abuse and grooming should be equally bad for both male and female, not have shoulders shrugged because it’s an older male and young female.

This is my post of the year. This should definitely be something we address.

Stop being obtuse you don't have to read.

FancyFanny · 02/06/2023 13:50

Media savvy or not, PS must be feeling pretty shit right now! The things that have been written about him, the outrage and the loss of of his reputation and career are way out of proportion to the mis-demener he made. At the end of the day the only thing he has done wrong is to shag a junior member of staff. They were both consenting adults.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 02/06/2023 13:52

No I think fear of being accused of homophobia is why he wasn't pulled up sooner.

What would we say if he'd been grooming a young girl since a similar age?

Kinneddar · 02/06/2023 13:53

They weren't when they met. He was a 10 year old child. PS groomed him.

Right, because straight male celebrities grooming women and girls has never been ignored. 🙄

Wheresthebeach · 02/06/2023 14:04

I find it genuinely shocking that so many posters don't understand, or care about, the power imbalance, the building a relationship of trust with a teenager, the propelling teenager into a job and then granting access that isn't appropriate for the job level, the waiting til the clock ticked over to 'legal' then having sex.

It baffles me that anyone can't see how wrong this is. Add to that - staying married, lying to everyone about the relationship, hiring top flight lawyers to keep it out of the news...honest to God how many more red flags are needed?

Whatwhat123 · 02/06/2023 14:04

Apparently he spent a lot of time sending snapchat messages to teenagers as well, it's the overall pattern of behaviour which is really dodgy. Why on earth would he think that would be appropriate as well?
He abused his position of power and I don't think him doing all of these interviews and statements is going to help change public opinion.

I think he needs to go and get some psychological support and live away from the spotlight now.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 02/06/2023 14:06

50450750q · 02/06/2023 13:59

Well obviously they have in the past but, in this day and age, he wouldn't have got all the congratulatory isn't he brave crap for grooming a young girl. Look at the response Prince Andrew has had for having sex with a 17yr old. Schofield was grooming that boy from a much much younger age abused his position to get to get him work on the show and failed to report his brother's abuse.

ProfessorXtra · 02/06/2023 14:08

50450750q · 02/06/2023 13:59

Right, because straight male celebrities grooming women and girls has never been ignored. 🙄

Both can be true.

PS came out because of these rumours. It was a smoke screen. It gave him the ability to say ‘oh it’s homophobia’

But also no one really cares when girls are groomed, ever.

The reason abuse of girls and women is ignored and a big deal made when it happens to boys or men, is misogyny. Not homophobia aimed at the man sleeping with a young man

In the video, MM looks excited when Jack Jones arrives! Happy! He's clearly naive and doesn't understand the situation. PS on the other hand looks like he's been caught red handed and he certainly realises the potential implications...

I must be watching a different video.

They both look fine.

The boyfriend doesn’t look like he’s being held captive or like some flory idiot who doesn’t know what a confetti canon is.

Schfield, a famous man, is openly in public with another person.

The boyfriend isn’t exactly sitting on his knee smooching him. They aren’t behaving intimately.

Nothing to see here.

PS admitted he lied and the he told the truth. He could have taken his affair to the death like many celebs before him. But he didn’t. Can’t knock him for that really.

Rummikub · 02/06/2023 14:10

He’s doing damage limitation imo. Badly.

Once again (because MUMSNET never seem to read posts properly!)

I never said what Philip done was ok - but I said the deal being made over it is way way bigger than I wouldn't expect that's all!

Don’t you think that we, as a society should react strongly to an older adult using a position of power and authority to groom a much younger person, going on to have a sexual relationship with them once they turned 18, @ivfregret?

It’s entirely comparable.

Caroline Flack committed a violent crime and the press and public were baying for bloody so heavily she was pushed to suicide.

The fact she killed herself doesn’t mean she wasn’t wrong for assaulting her boyfriend while he slept.

PS is imorally wrong but Jesus what do people actually WANT from him because it DOES feel like they want him to suffer enormously.

Then again I’ve never got the hysteria around PS. Like when he skipped the queue for the Queen - so fucking what. It was hardly Phil and Holly’s fault the country had completely lost the run of itself and queued for a day for a woman they never knew. I’d have skipped the queue too.

Rummikub · 02/06/2023 14:23

People don’t like being manipulated or gas lighted and I think this is what his actions / statements feels like

As well as the blurred lines at best isn’t a good look.
