To think Phillip schofield scandal is homophobia?

ivfregret · 01/06/2023 00:00

Have I missed something in that the guy Philip had the affair with was not a minor?

He was a minor when they met, as was Cheryl Cole and Liam Payne for example and no one has anything bad to say about that relationship.

I'm not sticking up for Philip and really dislike him, and also think even if the runner was above the age of consent is most definitely questionable behaviour but I can't help think of it was a heterosexual affair it would not be treated in the same way?

@Summerfun2023 he was working in a pub. Apparently he quit a few weeks ago. Can’t blame him really.

He abused his position and did the square root of fuck all about his disgusting brother. He deserves everything he gets.

Exactly. The brother being gay and interested in children is all the more reason to fear what PS has done.

It was actually pretty acceptable for heterosexual men and older teen girls as well. Look at many musicians / celebs, athletes from a couple decades ago. Groupies was a real thing too.

And there are still older men getting with younger women.

It wasn't perversion for anyone. And if you go onto gay discussion boards, you will see that twinks and relationships with older men are still quite a regular topic of conversation and not a major perversion or taboo. There are youtube and tiktok channels of people in those relationships posting about them with lots of followers.

The younger generations will do things differently for sure and social norms change but that doesn't change history.

On the gay discussion board I am aware of, they are revolted by PS's grooming of this young teenager - even though you are bending over backwards to excuse it and appointing yourself chief expert of all things gay.

They view PS as a groomer, and they don't refer to 15 year old boys as "twinks". Twinks are young, androgenous-looking boys and men of legal age.

StraightOuttaContext · 01/06/2023 12:46

I think there are plenty of people who are using this case as an excuse to express their homophobia, BUT it's absolutely NOT homophobic per se to condemn grooming, exploitation, abuse of power, and so on. It's really important.

Verv · 01/06/2023 12:48

Nope, absolutely not, and I say this as a blatant homosexual 😂

I think if anything he used his "coming out as gay" as a way to cynically and strategically shield/slash/divert the impending shitstorm because he knew fine well that the grooming of a young man was known and likely to come out, regardless of Schofield waiting until the kid was "of age" to embark on the sexual element.

I suspect he thought he'd get an easier / more cosseted time of it if he had his hand held and head stroked through the "difficult time" of nuking his wife and kids.

Effectivey, he played the Kevin Spacey game.

Elior · 01/06/2023 12:49

I'm surprised that people are not more disgusted by PS using his sexuality as a coverup for his grooming. He bought himself a lot of time.

This.
Twinks are young but above the age of consent.
I dont know a single gay person who's excusing Schofield. If anything it's irritating as fk that grooming was hidden behind "coming out as gay" as per my previous post.

We're not talking about history, we're talking about now when know that older people don't get to abuse their power.

Young girls/boys may THINK they are consenting but you can't really consent when you are still basically a child with a child's way of thinking.

I remember a 30 year old asking to kiss me when I was 15 (almost a consenting person) and I was frightened. I can remember my mentality and I was a child. There are more examples (which are worse sadly) but I won't go into it here.

Convince yourself all you like that teens aren't victims of grown adults.

If you've never watched it, I suggest you watch the series about Rochdale. Those girls 'thought' they were consenting. They 'thought' it was what they wanted.

Hopefully your job doesn't involve anyone under the age of 21.

LightlySearedontheRealityGrill · 01/06/2023 12:52

Not homophobia, look at Rupert Sanders and Kristen Stewart scandal, and she was 22 (him 41 and married). His wife left him, and since then he's worked on one movie in 10 years. Generally people don't like older married people predating on the young people they work with, regardless of their sex or sexuality.

Just imagine, the story regarding the runner is on the brink of breaking and then he comes out as gay, everyone applauds, story about runner disappears and even Eamonn Holmes has to pretend to like him. He must have been laughing when he thought he had got away with it.

Elior · 01/06/2023 12:55

Of course the casting couch isn't a thing of the past just because of #MeToo. We are talking about an industry where there are thousands and thousands of people chasing every career position and people at the top who are treated as gods whose vices need to be indulged, not just tolerated or ignored. It could only disappear if the whole industry became grassroots and even then, I doubt it as free media also has a pecking order and it's own shady dealings which are even harder to spot.

Eammon is obviously still furious that he got used 😆

You have misunderstood me. I was referring to this young man when in the relationship with PS which was when he was legal age from all we know.

I am working from facts, not speculation and fiction as this young man is a real, live, breathing, human who has already lived his life and whatever happened in it is known to him. I will not disrespect and disparage him with made up speculations. If more is told or he shares his story, then there is more to discuss.

I have never defended PS.

The first thread was a reasonable discussion of faacts. Without anything new released, this thread has devolved into a pretty awful speculative thread about the runner's childhood and harm that could have come to him and I find it very distateful and disrepectul to him. This isn't a fictitious story to add your worst case scenario thoughts to about what could have happend to this young man over his lifetime that would make Philip look the worst. He has already been victimized in many ways, this thread is just more of the same. I leave you to it.

Once again (because MUMSNET never seem to read posts properly!)

I never said what Philip done was ok - but I said the deal being made over it is way way bigger than I wouldn't expect that's all!

So if you know what he did was wrong and predatory, why do you have a problem with people talking about it being wrong and predatory?

PopcorningPancakingWheeking · 01/06/2023 13:22

In this day and age most people don't have an issue with a gay TV presenter. Plenty of people were sad when Paul O'Grady passed.

It’s because he’s a groomer, not because he’s gay. If you can’t spot the difference, that’s a worry.

The story disappeared for as long as it did because Covid / lockdown. His timing was impeccable!

Elior · 01/06/2023 13:37

Is there anyone or anything that PS does not use to his advantage?

When you compare this to the treatment of the corruption scandal of our ex prime minister giving one of his lovers financial privileges just because she was sleeping with him you see how easily Johnson got off. There was none of this hysteria, not even when people found out that he had sex with her in the marital bed.

Oh, was she 15 when they met?

Hehehejeiej · 01/06/2023 14:01

It feels like you have an agenda @PosseGalore I think it’s an important conversation to have when dealing with young people. Clearly ITV, who know a lot more about things than you do feel the same because they’ve appointed a KC to investigate. You’ll keep trying to stop people talking about this no doubt. I question your motives to be honest..

Elior · 01/06/2023 14:09

There isn't a comparison. There wasn't a safeguarding dimension or a duty of care involved.

Raquelos · 01/06/2023 14:10

ChintzyGunslinger · 01/06/2023 14:00

Oh, was she 15 when they met?

But shouldn't the morality of an elected representative be of more concern to the press than that of a two-bit daytime TV presenter?

PS is sleazy AF for sure and has quite rightly lost his job and reputation, but this smacks of one of those media frenzies that are built up to produce profitable clicks and low-risk entertainment for the masses. It's okay though because no one with real power or influence was harmed in the making of this scandal.

Elior · 01/06/2023 14:13

BJ never denied he was a sleazy rogue. He cannot help it if large swathes of the population are bowled over by him and keep wanting him back. He is not particularly judgmental.
PS was the opposite. He even used the situation with his brother to promote his squeaky-cleanliness.
