Hotel breakfast

Firstly I know this is pretty minor!

I decided to treat my DD7 to a night away by the seaside in a hotel for half term. I’m on a low income so had to save up for it but really wanted to do something special as we can’t afford a proper holiday this year.

I chose the hotel carefully based on the facilities and menu etc. and decided to pay extra for breakfast after checking the menu online. DD won’t eat a cooked breakfast but they listed a selection of pastries and fresh fruit salad among the options which she will eat as well as cereal. I checked the breakfast options again with the receptionist when we checked in and she showed me the same menu.

We went down to breakfast just now and were told they didn’t have any pastries. So I asked if we could have a fresh fruit salad and they pointed at a bowl of tinned fruit cocktail. I asked if they had fresh fruit as per the menu and they looked really put out and said they would check if the kitchen could do that, then came back ten minutes later saying they couldn’t. (I was perfectly polite by the way)

AIBU to be a bit annoyed? Clearly fresh fruit is not something they ever usually have so I think it’s misleading to put it on the menu. I wouldn’t have bothered opting for the hotel breakfast if I’d known I’d be paying £15 for a bowl of Rice Krispies.

Complain

YANBU although I guess the vast majority of people probably have a cooked breakfast so they probably don't routinely put a lot of effort into the non-cooked options. It's pretty shoddy to advertise it on the menu though. You should get your money back at least as they didn't have the only two things your daughter wanted.

TheChosenTwo · 31/05/2023 09:17

I’d usually just go out and get breakfast elsewhere after that debacle but knowing your budget is tight I think I’d go and speak to someone and ask if they can refund the breakfast, you checked and checked again and they are now going back on their word.

MrsSkylerWhite · 31/05/2023 09:18

No, YANBU. Complain and cite the advertised menu. Hope you enjoy the rest of your day.

Complain and ask for a refund as what you paid for wasn’t provided. Make sure you leave reviews everywhere stating what happened

FrostyFifi · 31/05/2023 09:18

Could you get a refund and go out to a cafe instead? For £15 you should be able to get something quite nice.

Overthebow · 31/05/2023 09:19

I'd complain and get a refund for the breakfast, then use that money to go out somewhere nice to eat instead. If pastries and fresh fruit are on the menu then they should have them.

GiveupHQ · 31/05/2023 09:21

You paid £15 for a child’s breakfast?

Tirq3 · 31/05/2023 09:22

Thank you, I didn’t know if I was being a bit precious as I suppose it might not be a big deal to a lot of people but I’m poor 😄 I will speak to the receptionist when we check out in a minute.

Yeah you should have complained at breakfast and asked them to take the £15 off

Lcb123 · 31/05/2023 09:23

Ask them to refund the breakfast. I wouldn’t have bothered paying unless you both wanted a cooked breakfast

No it should be a bit deal to anyone to not get what they've paid for

rolloverbeethoven · 31/05/2023 09:25

You certainly aren't being unreasonable, and they should refund you for the (non) breakfast. In my experience it's best to get a nice pastry from a shop before you get to the hotel, then you can eat it in your room. I hope the rest of your break was lovely.

GimmeSleep · 31/05/2023 09:25

I know it's part of the "experience" but you could have gone to a nice cafe and got her some pastries for a lot less than £15.

On the menu is there anything indicating that certain items might not be available e.g. an * next to them?

NeverendingCircus · 31/05/2023 09:25

I agree. You shouldn't pay for a breakfast that wasn't provided as advertised.

Ask for a refund.

MinxieMax · 31/05/2023 09:29

I would be very disappointed with that poor choice. I don't eat cooked brekkie myself, so choose weetabix/porridge, yogurt/fruit/pastry type of things (and plenty of them lol).

Say that you were very disappointed with the choice on offer and that all of the items you would usually select were unavailable although the menu said they were. Ask if they can adjust your bill.

NotAnAngelOrAHero · 31/05/2023 09:38

Yes definitely mention it and get a refund! Not acceptable

Catspyjamas17 · 31/05/2023 09:39

Agree, it's not what you thought you were paying for. You'd be better off going to Pret a Manger or something.

BeaLola · 31/05/2023 09:39

Definitely get a refund on breakfast and then go a lovely local cafe and have a fab breakfast (hopefully a lovely cafe nearby)

FlounderingFruitcake · 31/05/2023 09:46

It’s not as advertised so you should definitely get a refund, it’s shitty they didn’t offer in the first instance but I would go back and insist. It’s the principle as much as it is the money. Then for £15 you should manage coffee, juice and a pastry each just about anywhere.

FlamingoQueen · 31/05/2023 09:52

Ask for the £15 to be deducted from your bill - especially as you asked when checking in. It’s not a Premier Inn is it?

Hidinginaonesie · 31/05/2023 09:54

You’re not being precious at all. Get a refund.
I hope you and your dd had a lovely time regardless.

LlynTegid · 31/05/2023 10:05

Assuming you were there before 9, and not five minutes before the end of breakfast, then complain.

Ha yes, I wondered that too. We're in a Premier Inn and half the continental stuff is not available.
