Hotel breakfast

Firstly I know this is pretty minor!

I decided to treat my DD7 to a night away by the seaside in a hotel for half term. I’m on a low income so had to save up for it but really wanted to do something special as we can’t afford a proper holiday this year.

I chose the hotel carefully based on the facilities and menu etc. and decided to pay extra for breakfast after checking the menu online. DD won’t eat a cooked breakfast but they listed a selection of pastries and fresh fruit salad among the options which she will eat as well as cereal. I checked the breakfast options again with the receptionist when we checked in and she showed me the same menu.

We went down to breakfast just now and were told they didn’t have any pastries. So I asked if we could have a fresh fruit salad and they pointed at a bowl of tinned fruit cocktail. I asked if they had fresh fruit as per the menu and they looked really put out and said they would check if the kitchen could do that, then came back ten minutes later saying they couldn’t. (I was perfectly polite by the way)

AIBU to be a bit annoyed? Clearly fresh fruit is not something they ever usually have so I think it’s misleading to put it on the menu. I wouldn’t have bothered opting for the hotel breakfast if I’d known I’d be paying £15 for a bowl of Rice Krispies.

You paid £15 for a breakfast for a child that only eats cereal and fruit?

Seriously, what is your issue with the OP? You relished in calling her a liar because you decided she stayed in the Premier Inn, when she said no such thing, and now you take issue with her describing herself as “very poor”.

If you think OP is a troll, then report it. But you seem awfully obsessed in criticising her and making up stories.

daverday · 01/06/2023 11:37

I would complain not to the waiter/ waitress but to the owner/ manager.
Ask for a refund on the breakfasts.

And when you say “report them”… to the police?!! 😂

Trading standards, maybe? It's misrepresenting a product/service in a pretty significant way.

This. I think you’ll be surprised at how easily it’s refunded. Good luck!

I’m glad it was partially sorted for you, we’re vegetarians and we often find this with continential breakfasts.

We now make a point of asking which fresh fruit is due to be on offer in the morning when we check in, and we ask specifically what their continental includes with examples.

We once stayed in a very nice hotel where the flat fee for brealfast was £20, it turned out the continental breakfast was stale bread, pre-packaged pastries and glace cherries. We were staying there to attend a wedding, so we couldn’t just go elsewhere for breakfast, we managed to get a breakfast refund and 20% off the room. Unfortunately people don’t typically review continental breakfasts on tripadvisor.

We’re currently in a hotel in Germany, today the options were pastries, breads, cheese, meats, cereals, yoghurts, melon, pear, apple, kiwi, pineapple, mango and mixed berries, all fresh, not tinned or frozen and unlimited juice and coffee for €8 for adults and €4 for children.

PinkStarAtNight · 01/06/2023 13:44

YANBU in the sense of they should provide the breakfast items that were advertised

However, I don't know how many hotels you've been in but if I knew I wouldn't be wanting the full cooked breakfast, I wouldn't rely on a hotel having a good quality range of continental options that would be worth the breakfast price. I see you paid £15. I was guessing it would be £10 and I wouldn't have paid that for pastries and fruit. I would have treated DD to really nice pastries at Cafe Nero or Costa. Would have been cheaper and nicer and YABU to have put faith in a hotel's continental breakfast. Doesn't everyone know they're always a bit lack lustre?

Luckyduc · 01/06/2023 14:52

I'd complain and explain why to them.

Premier inn do breakfast for 9.99 for an all you can eat and children eat free or 6.99 for just continental. They are quite good for prices if you book in advance as I've often paid just 32.00 for the night.

Whichwhatnow · 01/06/2023 15:01

Good hotel breakfasts (with a range of fruit, cheese, cereal, pastries, cold meat and cooked options) are one of the main criteria and a real treat whenever I stay away so I feel you and your DD's pain! The last hotel we stayed at was a ridiculously opulent five star spa hotel yet the breakfast was inexplicably cheap sausages, cold egg and beans and stale croissants. Ruined the whole experience! I'd complain OP.

Sorry I’ve not been back in a while, we’ve been at the beach. The Premier Inn controversy made me laugh! It wasn’t a Premier Inn but an independent hotel. Anyway they gave me a partial refund for one of the breakfasts which was enough to get a couple of ice creams. Thanks for the nice messages x

Ah that's good 😊 Hopefully they'll do better for future guests!

Fruit cocktail in a tin would have crossed the line for me too.

I like tinned fruit, but fruit cocktail in a tin is absolutely disgusting. I have a memory of my mother putting some into a baked Alaska and even at that young age, thinking ‘why’ ??

It just ruins everything.

Reminds me of that scene in Fawlty Towers:

Hotel guest: ‘Could we cancel our fruit salads please?’

Sybil: ‘Well, it’s a little tricky. Chef’s just opened the tin…’

You should have asked for your money back right away. You can complain now and leave a review online, so no one else has the same problem

You are NOT being precious when paying £15 for a breakfast. Message the hotel with a similar message to one posted here, explaining the choice they advertise and what you were offered. They shouldn't want a review based on what you have received and hopefully will give you a refund. Sorry you were disappointed when you were trying to have a nice time away.

Seems to spend an awful lot of time rummaging through people’s previous posts too, in an attempt to play Miss Marple (comes across more like Inspector Closseau though).

LoisLane66 · 02/06/2023 23:09

You'd have got what you wanted at Wetherspoon's. I've had bowl of porridge with fresh blueberries and a banana on the side plus 2 warm crisp croissants (not heated in microwave as they go soft) butter and jams plus tea or coffee for a fiver. This was last month in Eastbourne.

Shona52 · 03/06/2023 09:16

You didn’t get what you paid for period. I would be asking for a refund for the cost of the breakfast. Especially as you went out your way to check before hand. I always do this but via emails so I have a written back up to prove things. YRNBU
