Hotel breakfast

Firstly I know this is pretty minor!

I decided to treat my DD7 to a night away by the seaside in a hotel for half term. I’m on a low income so had to save up for it but really wanted to do something special as we can’t afford a proper holiday this year.

I chose the hotel carefully based on the facilities and menu etc. and decided to pay extra for breakfast after checking the menu online. DD won’t eat a cooked breakfast but they listed a selection of pastries and fresh fruit salad among the options which she will eat as well as cereal. I checked the breakfast options again with the receptionist when we checked in and she showed me the same menu.

We went down to breakfast just now and were told they didn’t have any pastries. So I asked if we could have a fresh fruit salad and they pointed at a bowl of tinned fruit cocktail. I asked if they had fresh fruit as per the menu and they looked really put out and said they would check if the kitchen could do that, then came back ten minutes later saying they couldn’t. (I was perfectly polite by the way)

AIBU to be a bit annoyed? Clearly fresh fruit is not something they ever usually have so I think it’s misleading to put it on the menu. I wouldn’t have bothered opting for the hotel breakfast if I’d known I’d be paying £15 for a bowl of Rice Krispies.

And it’s £9.99 for the adult and kid eats free

so not £15

Hotel breakfast
Catspyjamas17 · 31/05/2023 10:10

Sure, but they still haven't provided what they advertised.

Sorry, I missed the post where the OP said they stayed at a Premier Inn?

rookiemere · 31/05/2023 10:16

Definitely ask for your money back.
DS didn't use to eat cooked breakfast and lived for the pastries and Nutella.
Breakfast in a hotel is meant to be a treat, otherwise why not pay less and stay in an Airbnb.

GiveupHQ · 31/05/2023 10:19

Apologies I thought confirmed

ShakeYourFeathers · 31/05/2023 10:20

I would complain

I can't have cook breakfast for health reasons. They make me really poorly due to an underlying health condition. I would be really put out if I couldn't eat breakfast.

I've noticed recently in hotels that when they say continental breakfast they mean a soggy bit of toast and a small selection of jam. Whereas before there was a larger spread and more options

She never said it was a Premier Inn. And you're a using her of lying? How rude are you?!

caringcarer · 31/05/2023 10:29

If you can find a Beefeater they charge for adults and children under 16 eat free. They have cooked breakfast help yourself, toast, pastries like pan au chocolate and croissants, little muffins, fresh fruit and yoghurts too.

Using the standard MN reply “did you mean to be that rude?”

Anyway back to the OP, as others have said ask for a refund and use it to treat your DS to a nice lunch

caringcarer · 31/05/2023 10:31

starfishmummy · 31/05/2023 10:07

Ha yes, I wondered that too. We're in a Premier Inn and half the continental stuff is not available.

Premier Inns give free breakfast to children so it can't be there as OP said she had to pay £15 for her DC.

Muncha · 31/05/2023 10:35

Definitely complain

You’ve actually made up a story to be nasty to the OP.

This is a new low for AIBU.

TimesRwo · 31/05/2023 10:38

Definitely complain OP. I would try and get a partial refund if I were you. The menu was not as advertised and it has cost you.

Hoppinggreen · 31/05/2023 10:42

I’m not “poor” but I would still be very unhappy about paying £15 for breakfast that I didn’t get

edwinbear · 31/05/2023 10:50

I'd ask for a refund too OP. Like you say, £15 for a child sized bowl of cereal is a complete rip off.

GiveupHQ · 31/05/2023 10:10

This gotcha moment that never was….thanks for the laughs this morning!

FloofCloud · 31/05/2023 11:01

Personally I'd tension very professional and say why you thought this hotels breakfast would work well for your daughter. Ask if they can make those items available to her for the remainder of the trip. It's no big deal to bake croissants and but sone fruits in

Elior · 31/05/2023 11:01

Premier Inn deal usually covers most fussy children and I always went for it with mine. Any old hotel making promises and charging that much would make me suspicious as they don't have the footfall to put on a huge spread. Anyway, we caught covid from 5* hotel breakfast buffets twice in the last year so I think we will go back to self-catering.

Newestname002 · 31/05/2023 11:02

I love a good hotel breakfast- breakfast is my favourite meal and I would have been anticipating it before I even left my room.

I would have been extremely disappointed that what was on the menu wasn't available and would have either left and eaten elsewhere (if the meal wasn't part of the room rate) and/or have complained as per posters' comments. Yes do try and get a refund and maybe add a factual review to the hotel's website. 🌹

mainsfed · 31/05/2023 11:09

That is pretty poor. £15 should get you a decent continental breakfast option.

Fandabedodgy · 31/05/2023 11:09

Complain to manager. If you are not happy with the response, trip advisor is next.

ringsaglitter · 31/05/2023 11:22

awwww, I feel angry on your behalf. I;m just messaging out of kind sympathy

EvilElsa · 31/05/2023 11:36

That's shit. I'd have been disappointed too as I would only want the continental breakfast options. I wouldn't be happy at all with tinned fruit and cereal if I'd paid £15.
Hope you've managed to get the cost removed from your bill. You will definitely be able to find a better breakfast for that price somewhere else. You'd be better off buying nice pastries from a bakery and eating them by the sea!
Enjoy the rest of your holiday.
