Hes taking a 45l hiking bag for hand luggage

Were a family of 4, me, OH, DS 6, and LO baby.
Flying out tommrow I will have LOs changing bag with all his bits and bobs. DS will have his little backpack with spare change of clothes, teddy and colouring. OH usually takes a grey normal sized backpack where we put doucments, snacks and other bits as hand luggage. We've used the bag on other flights it's also wearable for both of us (even though he has this obsession of hanging everything off it.) We are also taking 2 hold luggage and stroller.

Earlier I told OH that we need to put something in the grey bag he said I'm taking my new bag, I asked which one he said it's in the other room, I went and had a look and it's a FUCKING 45L hiking bag with waist straps and just a monstrosity. I said we dont need such a big bag there barley enough seating room. Plus I will have baby in the baby carrier, so will struggle to carry other things. Especially If ASD DS6 has a meltdown and I have to carry him.

From the past few holidays Ive realised for us it's best not to have lots of hand luggage as we never get space in the overhead compartments despite how early we get to our seats, so we've had to put stuff under the seats. OH is also overweight and takes up a bit of extra room, he ends up squashing me most of the time, he always leaves his puffa coat on for the whole flight and just looks uncomfortable. He eventually takes it off but there never any space so he tries to shove it behind my seat for me to use as a cushion, which I dont want, as I'll be holding baby so less room anyway. I've tried to explain myself and the reasons but hes adamant hes going to take it.

I had sorted the bags on friday so everything was manageable but now last minute hes decided take that hideous hiking bag. Hes not packed a single thing, I've done everything, even packed his crap. I'm just fucking pissed off with this type of shit that he does. He always does random shit like this last minute. He doesnt even hike, he hates walking. He won't ever use that bag again. I'm just festering because i know exactly what will happen tomorrow because hes so predictable but as always it will end up being my fault.

Are you always so controlling. Just let him pack his stuff when he wants and in what bag he wants.

Sissynova · 31/05/2023 12:55

So you were awake and posting at midnight and 7am...but didn't notice your husband wasn't in the house at either of those times?

GladAllOver · 30/05/2023 22:13

Sounds to me that the real excess baggage is your OH.

Rather uncharitably, I had the same thought myself. OP paints a very unattractive picture.

diddl · 31/05/2023 13:28

Because he quite obviously didn't bang on the door for hours and hours. He probably knocked a few times and then went and slept in the car

Shame he doesn't keep his house key with his car keys!

I don’t know. In a choice between a DP who’s main crime seems to be being overweight and picking a perfectly normal sized bag for cabin luggage, or a DP who gets pissed off at the bay I choose and tries to make me pack my bag weeks in advance, I know which I’d rather.

diddl · 31/05/2023 13:30

Do you really hate him as much as you appear to Op?

I'm guessing not as you wouldn't be going on holiday with him would you?

TeaKlaxon · 31/05/2023 13:30

FriedBrainFood · 31/05/2023 12:10

Also I reiterated to him he can take the hiking bag If he likes but he needs to take extra money because they WILL charge him and I aint going to be there when he has to fanny around.

He very swiftly went and got the other bag

Except that he almost certainly wouldn’t be charged…the bag is a perfectly normal size for carry on luggage.

Very selective reading there.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 31/05/2023 13:31

sorry op. I missed your post.

I hope you’re all happily flying to Bodrum and you’re not cramped in a seat with a massive puffa jacket.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 31/05/2023 13:31

Not really.

I don’t really use hiking backpacks so when OP said it was 45l I assumed it must be one of those massive ones. Turns out the bag is a perfectly normal size for cabin luggage.

The whole ‘I had to pack for him’ neglected to mention that the OP wanted him to start packing weeks in advance. So when she says she had to pack for him, I wonder how far in advance she did it?

Crobbyhaft · 31/05/2023 13:43

All the peple saying it seems a normal size for cabin luggage, you realise its this bag? It is not a small rucksack... It's measurements say its 60cm x 36cm x 26cm. Jet2, who the OP has said they're flying with allow hand luggage of 56cm x 45cm x 25cm. So if full, it would be too big to use.

Hmm

What’s that face for? It’s a bit weird to not notice your husband has disappeared for 7 hours. She has a baby and a child with ASD so I doubt she didn’t wake up at any point in the night. Maybe she was hoping he’d walked out as she clearly doesn’t like him!

GeraltsBathtub · 31/05/2023 13:58

@Crobbyhaft it’s not massive. We have the same bag and have used it on Jet2 - it will easily fit if the top pocket isn’t stuffed, which basically makes the length where you see the top of the strap in your picture. Here’s a picture of it empty next to a standard 30L bag.

But you wouldn't ram it full, all he'll have in there is his puffa jacket and passport 🤣.

BeachBlondey · 31/05/2023 14:04

This needs to go in to Classics. Been giggling all the way through. Op is very funny.

He's living up to my expectations admirably, OP. Locking himself out and leaving his phone behind...did he sleep in the car? Or do you have a handy shed kennel for him? Grin

Mine tried to fit my new made to measure roman blinds upside down this morning. The absolute Buttock.🙄

Yeah - I realise it’s that bag.

If filled to the point of being incapable of being squashed, then yes it would be 4cm too tall and 1cm too thick. But if it’s only filled 95% full it will easily fit the measurements.

It is a very normal size cabin bag. I fly almost every week. I never check a bag. A bag that size would be pretty normal cabin luggage on any of the airlines I fly.

He went out at 1 in the morning to put the cases in the car then locked himself out the house. When I got downstairs at 8 I heard banging on the front door and assumed he popped out the the corner shop. DS opened the front door and OH loudly says 'are you dead to the world I was knocking, I was locked out since 1'. He left his phone in the kitchen so couldn't call me either. Funny as he usually has that phone stuck up his arse 24/7.

He was locked outside, 1am-8am?! 😂

I'd normally not be so cruel, but he sounds an utter bellend so I'll admit I laughed aloud at that!

Also, why on earth is he packing the car at 1am?? Clearly you weren't setting off at the arsecrack of dawn if you only missed him at 8am... Does he arrive half an hour early for a routine train trip, too?

Why are you with someone you have so much distain for?

GlomOfNit · 31/05/2023 14:22

oh and OBVIOUSLY the bag is too big! My DS did his DofE with a 45l bag last year. We were told 50l but he's slender and short so the 50s were a bit too big for him. It's currently skulking in the corner of his bedroom so I know whereof I speak - 45l is absolutely massive for hand luggage, and even if you can cinch it in with the straps if it's not full, no airline out there will accept that. They just won't - they don't accept bags that are oversized but have been squashed to make them smaller.

GeraltsBathtub · 31/05/2023 14:27

Here’s a picture of the bag next to a Cabin Max bag, ie a bag which has been specifically designed to fit cabin dimensions. I store the offending bag inside the Cabin Max one.

pumpkintart · 31/05/2023 14:28

We have used two nearly identical bags as cabin bags a few times with no hold luggage I find them very comfy to carry plus can get a full weeks worth of clothes in. If he is happy to carry it leave him to it.

Well if you bothered reading the OP's posts, maybe you would have seen she put the case in the spare room a couple of weeks in advance and told him to put stuff in as and when he had it ready to go?

Or maybe that they'll get on the plane and her DP will give her his coat to sit with as well as having the baby on her lap, and won't help with their other child?

I also have no idea about the bag - but combined with the other crap I'm not sure how you came to the conclusion that she's the worse partner.

Have you looked at the measurements?

At full capacity the bag is only barely taller (4cm) and thicker(1cm) than the limit, and quite a bit narrower than the limit.

Everyone here claiming no airline would allow this on are just wrong.

Technically if 100% stuffed to capacity it could well be refused, but only just about and most airlines don’t spot the bags that are one or two cms over the limit. And of course it may well not be 100% stuffed anyway.
