Sick of some Cornish people bleating on as though they are the worlds only tourist destination

Just read the article below and found a few gems such as these:

’ have you ever wondered where the local people live? Or have you noticed that many of your holiday neighbours are recognisable in the narrow lanes of the pretty fishing villages because they are the same people you live near in London?’

and…

‘Despite what you may have read, we Cornish do welcome visitors and are happy to share our love of our land with you. But it might help if you do a bit of research – Cornwall is fiercely independent and has a proud and unique history and heritage…* *And try not to be rude to local people. If you’ve been asked to not drink from a glass bottle on the beach, there is a reason for that. Don’t forget to tip waiting staff. ‘

What patronising bollocks. So Londoner’s (as those are apparently the only people who visit Cornwall) are so untraveled and boorish we need to be told not to be rude to people, pay tips, not to smash glass bottles in sand, that we’ve bought all of their houses, that it’s ‘their’ land and we’re the ones who are rude?

I’d already decided I wouldn’t go back there after how some of them carried on during Covid but this article has pissed me off. Why would anyone go there when they can go to equally lovely places in the UK/World and not be treated with contempt?

I live in Yorkshire. We LOVE people coming to enjoy our area, we welcome everyone and we are not precious or protective about the area or considered it ‘ours’.

😂😂😂😂😂

Yorkshire is the largest county in England at 14,850.0 km2

Cornwall is number 16 on the list at 3,459.1 km2

I doubt Yorkshire gets quite as overrun as Cornwall apart from York itself.

I've been to Cornwall and it gets silly, there are too many people there during the height of the season - I wouldn't want to live there because of it

Yes I know, it's why I laughed at the original comment. I live in Cornwall.

I hope you get to enjoy it all once the mad season is over. I used to love our holidays there. We will be back and we are fortunate enough to be able to come out of season

DS went to university in Leeds everyone was very friendly. He now lives in Farsley which is also very friendly. Because he's Welsh he likes the community feeling.

This reminds me of a sentence I read in my Ladybird Book of Saints on the page about St David. "Welsh people love music and can sing well". Even at the age of seven it struck me as funny

Plenty of places in Yorkshire get hugely overrun, I’m already starting to see it now and by the summer here there’ll be no room to swing a cat

So last night at 1am I had to (very impolitely) request that the 14 dickhead tourists crammed into a 3 bed family home respect the 10pm weekday curfew. Weirdly they thought that because they are paying for a property they can keep an entire village awake.

A few tourists are respectful and welcome, most are entitled and grudgingly tolerated, a very large minority are absolute CFs.

Quisquam · 14/06/2023 08:40

What 10 pm curfew?

Daftasabroom · 14/06/2023 08:52

A lot of holiday lets will have a curfew for hot tubs, noise etc. in the T&Cs. As do most campsites, holiday parks etc.

justasking111 · 14/06/2023 09:13

They've generally had curfews abroad for pool use, Etc we've found

Wow a 'curfew', how Orwellian.

Yeah, I think you're proving daftasabroom's point there, goldenbear

In what way? Regardless of CFs, a 'curfew' in theory for people 'is' akin to a dystopian society.

I worked in Cornwall in a village that hosts a Regatta week. I was young and did lots of surfing but as I was from London I was used to the prejudices that existed there, the limited diversity and from Cornish nationalists the seeming offence at a Londoner in a job there. Even though only seasonal😐

Goldenbear · 14/06/2023 09:38

Wasn't not was

Goldenbear · 14/06/2023 09:40

I just felt it was so unchilled. I mean a beautiful environment juxtaposed with an ugly outlook from some.

Abroad not being a family campsite or holiday let presumably?

I can't believe many people would hold a rowdy party until the small hours on weekday at home, why would it be any different when away? It's that complete lack of consideration for others that really grates.

crackofdoom · 14/06/2023 11:25

It's not "Orwellian" to ask people to be quiet after 10.00pm on a weekday. Out of interest, have you ever read 1984?

We recently stayed in an AirBnB apartment outside Rome, which made exactly the same request. Which we complied with, because we're not cunts.

People en masse generally are vile. My sympathies to those working in retail or interacting with the general public daily in their line of work.

Failing to see the point in this thread. If you don't like Cornwall, then don't go. Not an issue I've ever had, as it's too far away and too expensive.

Oh and behave yourself when you're on holiday. Not sure why that article is being taken so personally. The Cornish are entitled to their opinions.

I've done the family campsite yep we had a curfew abroad. Have done a villa within a small complex it was pretty quiet by 9pm. But we could swim to cool off all night long. I found hotels and apartment blocks the noisest down to the tiled floors, the clack of heels and the sound of plumbing water from loos. Hence my trusty ear plugs

Well, I'm a Masters Literature graduate so yes, have read a bit.

Do you read anything, just wondering as it seems you don't have the vocab to make your point, resorting to calling people C*s that don't agree with you.

Are they? I actually found tourists were very generous (tips etc.) when I worked in Cornwall for the summer season. Surely, depends on the context rather than just tourists are 'all' bad. I actually found the Londoners were the biggest tippers, the tourist in general were pleasant enough.

That people act respectfully doesn't need to be stated in a contract. There is no way I would contemplate that level of restriction on a 'holiday'. I'm very pleased that the hotel we stayed in in Copenhagen last year, did not instruct us to be in at 10pm! Then again, I don't really enjoy purely coastal holidays in the UK so it is easy to avoid this issue.

I'm pretty sure you didn't have a rowdy party with 13 others and you if had, I'm sure the management would have had something to say.

Florenz · 16/06/2023 07:53

It isn't "Orwellian" to expect people to considerate of their neighbours/other guests. It's basic human decency.
