Sick of some Cornish people bleating on as though they are the worlds only tourist destination

Just read the article below and found a few gems such as these:

’ have you ever wondered where the local people live? Or have you noticed that many of your holiday neighbours are recognisable in the narrow lanes of the pretty fishing villages because they are the same people you live near in London?’

and…

‘Despite what you may have read, we Cornish do welcome visitors and are happy to share our love of our land with you. But it might help if you do a bit of research – Cornwall is fiercely independent and has a proud and unique history and heritage…* *And try not to be rude to local people. If you’ve been asked to not drink from a glass bottle on the beach, there is a reason for that. Don’t forget to tip waiting staff. ‘

What patronising bollocks. So Londoner’s (as those are apparently the only people who visit Cornwall) are so untraveled and boorish we need to be told not to be rude to people, pay tips, not to smash glass bottles in sand, that we’ve bought all of their houses, that it’s ‘their’ land and we’re the ones who are rude?

I’d already decided I wouldn’t go back there after how some of them carried on during Covid but this article has pissed me off. Why would anyone go there when they can go to equally lovely places in the UK/World and not be treated with contempt?

I live in Cornwall and have just visited Liverpool. We could learn a lot from scouse hospitality!

My late FIL used to say Liverpool gentleman, Manchester man.

They're lovely.

It's not "Orwellian" to ask people to be quiet after 10.00pm on a weekday. Out of interest, have you ever read 1984?

We recently stayed in an AirBnB apartment outside Rome, which made exactly the same request. Which we complied with, because we're not cunts.

Out of interest, have you ever read 1984?

Basic courtesy and consideration is now branded "Orwellian". Why are people such dickheads?

WestwardHo1 · 17/06/2023 19:20

There's something about sun, sea and sand that makes many people act like total idiots.

Vitriolinsanity · 17/06/2023 19:46

To be honest @WestwardHo1 judging by the wank behaviour at my workplace this week you don't even need sand and sea.

22:37 on Tuesday night and we have a party kicking off next door. If you would like this from your neighbors etc us know.

When was the property last rewired? A lot of new electrical installations have a trip switch in the meter cupboard.

Why so many folks in Cornwall think these issues are unique to their corner of our green and pleasant land is just baffling.

Who says they do? Cornish people are obviously concerned about problems where they live - in Cornwall! No one is saying they think they are the only ones.

And it’s not only the Cornish who complain by any means, the people of Whitby have complained about many similar issues, and there was a news story this week about some attractions in France being overrun with visitors at times and encouraging (mainly English) visitors to go elsewhere.

Why people keep slagging off the Cornish in particular, especially when they proudly announce they have no intention of going there anyway, is baffling.

Yep. Hard agree.

And all the second homers and tourists have ruined Cornwall for the people who actually live there. All this nonsense about 'the Cornish are happy to take tourists' money' - well they don't have much choice as tourism (and Brexit) has decimated all other industries down there. God knows where it's all going to end as it's unsustainable to treat Cornwall like a giant holiday village that nobody lives in during the winter months, yet somehow needs to be up and running and look all quaint and pretty and ready to appeal to tourists during the summer. Not easy when house prices are now out of reach of the ordinary Cornish people, long-term rentals are non-existent and all the work that's left is seasonal and not particularly well paid, so all the young people leave for the cities. Sooner or later there will be nobody there to work in the bars and restaurants and surf shops - and there isn't even the possibility of seasonal workers from Europe coming to fill those gaps. Hey ho.

I'm from Devon where this is also happening, although it hasn't been ruined quite as badly as Cornwall as it has a couple of big cities and industry of its own.

Sigmama · 21/06/2023 14:39

Horseyhorsey, didn't Cornwall (rather short sightedly), vote brexit?

Sigmama · 21/06/2023 14:42

Horseyhorsey, a lot of cornish people own second homes/holiday lets in cornwall

georgarina · 21/06/2023 14:55

I live in London and tourists from other UK areas can be so rude. (Of course most are polite)
Blocking the street outside my door and saying 'EXCUUUUSE YOU' when I try to...leave my house to pick my child up from school. Or blocking the crossing at a green light with a group pic. Just zero consideration.

Newsflash: this is happening all over the country. Why do you think Devon and Cornwall should be insulated the forces that affect us all?

SometimesNine · 21/06/2023 19:14

We've been going to the same village in Cornwall for over twelve years, and absolutely love it. I can count unfriendly encounters on the fingers of one hand. Most people are friendly and welcoming. I order a big food delivery from The Cornish Food Box Company, and they are always super helpful, bringing in the food into the cottage while we are still on the way, they are very courteous and cordial over the phone.
We love the fudge and jam stalls by the houses with honesty boxes.
Years ago we did some horse riding holidays in Cornwall, and again, the people running the group were very friendly and kind to our autistic son.
So no, I won't stop going to Cornwall, in fact I am counting days until we go again this summer.

Don't talk crap. Why would anyone have a second home in the same place as their primary domicile? The vast vast majority of holiday let's are owned outside of the region.

There have been second homers for years in Cornwall. When I worked in Cornwall for a long summer I was going out with a Cornish Lad I'd met at Uni but many of the kids doing the seasonal jobs were the son's/daughter's of second homers. Isn't that how the place operates in the high seasons with young people visiting their family? My Cornish boyfriend was good friends with the offspring of children that had been visiting for years.
Surely like many people there are jobs people do at home particularly middle aged people and their kids do this seasonal work.

A lot of locals where I live in Wales have second homes for income, investment, or just to enjoy if it's near a beach.

A second home is a home that isn't let out. Why would you have two homes in the same village?

Inherited, annex, barn, second property on their land etc..

Mirabai · 21/06/2023 22:30

Second homes are let out..

Mirabai · 21/06/2023 22:29

Those are holiday lets not second homes, or at least not round our way.

In a parish of 2200 permanent residents we have 500 whole house holiday lets on Airbnb, add in the same of conventional lets, and big chunk of unoccupied second homes. Over 60% of properties are not realistically available to long term residents.

It is simply unsustainable.

Mirabai · 21/06/2023 22:41

A holiday let is a second home..

Mirabai · 21/06/2023 22:42

If you go to France, Spain, Italy, any holiday destination worldwide you will see the same pattern.

TurquoiseDress · 21/06/2023 23:01

Last time I was in Cornwall was in the 90s as a child with my parents

Great memories

Sounds like it's totally different now, tourists being treated with contempt

We'd rather head to Greece or something instead Grin
