Buying on vinted

Keep wasting money. Buy something that is sold as very good condition and on receipt item is bobbled/ very well used/ faded. Also looks nothing like the picture. Going through a financially hard time and needed loads of new clothes so thought would be a good idea but wasted so much about half of items only fit for bin or charity shop. Plus by the time you add on all other fees not that cheap. AIBU to give up on vinted for good? Or have others had more luck on there.

The kids stuff I've bought on Vinted has been barely worn! I've bought several big bundles for both DDs and the stuff has been almost pristine.

mamabear715 · 30/05/2023 18:56

@Wantcattostoppeeing I agree with you. If I had limited money to clothe young children, it would be Primark / Asda etc all the way.

I disagree! I’ve just bought the most gorgeous & Other Stories silk blouse - good as new - for a fraction of the price it would have been new.

I have just bought a designer necklace worth thousands for just over £100 and I’m fully expecting it to be a complete scam 😂 but I couldn’t leave it there; the seller even sent me fresh pics of hallmarks and from my research it was well worth the risk. I’ve screen shotted all photos & info and will just return for a refund if it turns up and is cheap tat. I’ll actually fall over if it turns out to be genuine, but for £100 it was a risk I was fully willing to take 😅

Follows this thread in the hope that you come back and confirm whether all was good - fingers crossed for you 🤞

Hugasauras · 30/05/2023 19:01

The kids bundles are really good value. I think that individual pieces are probably not as worth unless you're getting designer pieces due to shipping, but I got a £5 bundle plus £3 shipping the other week, so £8 all in, and it was 7 M&S long-sleeved tops, 5 T-shirts and 7 pairs of leggings from Next for my 4yo. All looked unworn. Even at Asda you aren't getting all that for £8! I often use Asda for nursery things, but I always check Vinted for bundles first now!

I've had some great bargains on Vinted. but it does piss me off that you have to pay for returns even when it's the sellers fault.

I bought a gorgeous boden dress, in really good condition. When it arrived. it was a size 12 not a 14 as per the description. The seller was very apologetic but at the end of the day I had to pay the return postage which meant I was out of pocket.

StoneofDestiny · 30/05/2023 19:20

There is some amazing stuff on Vinted - perfect condition clothes often not worn (with tags) or worn once . Steer away from the unironed stuff - shows lack of care and a clue how the clothes have been treated.
I've sold worn once clothes as worn for a wedding/special event I'll not wear again. They have been bargains and the buyers have been very pleased.

Yeah the sizing descriptions on Vinted can catch people out I think. Small - 8 Medium - 10 Large - 12. That's not going to apply to different brands etc. After a bit of trial and error I try to provide information about the fit, as well as photos of the labels to give the buyer the best chance of buying something in the right size. (appreciate it was just a mistake by the seller in your case, but I think people can genuinely get it wrong with sizing without realising)

😁 I iron clothes for weddings and... Yeah that's it. They're still in beautiful condition!

Mamoun · 30/05/2023 19:28

@Wantcattostoppeeing
You're talking about a different thing.
I get it that people who are struggling might have no other option than fast fashion but recommending Shein in such a lighthearted way is a bit silly isn't it? It has grave consequences and if you're able / have the time to spend searching good deal on vinted, shein is not a good alternative.

I actually hate it when people say "do better, educate yourself" but in this case it is deserved. Shein isn't h&m or zara, it is 100x worse. It releases new models everyday, returns go directly into landfill as it is more expensive to put them back in stores...

FilthyforFirth · 30/05/2023 19:29

I only buy things with tags, not had a problem yet and got loads of bargains. I love it! Especially good for kids toys etc. Got loads last year for stockings!

Minervia · 30/05/2023 19:30

My worst ones were a pair of unused Merrell walking boots which were perfect except that the seller had forgotten to mention that there were no insoles in them rendering them rather useless. I did actually keep those thinking that I would buy some insoles ( I haven't). Then there was a dress I bought as New Without Tags which arrived bobbled, grey and marked. I was pretty peeved about that one so I wrote to the seller to advise she be more careful in her descriptions, but she made me madder by insisting that it was brand new, so despite it only being a £3 dress I raised a complaint. I was pretty impressed with Vinted as I got my money back including postage and fees the next day. I offered to send the seller her dress back but she told me to keep it. I've binned it it's not even good enough for the charity shop .
They're my two bad experiences. The rest have been great. Been to work today in a gorgeous Wallis shirt dress and Clarks sandals both of which were brand new and together cost me about a tenner

Whyohwhyohwhy123 · 30/05/2023 19:35

I have quite a few good purchases on Vinted and one awful one. I mainly sell on there. I take photos of all the faults and iron everything and have a few hundred 5stars reviews. I don’t mind buying from someone with no reviews but I give them a miss if they’ve a lot of poor reviews

The sizing on Vinted really is a bit mad. Why on earth they don’t just use standard UK sizing is beyond me. I take photos of labels and state in description that it is standard sizing for the brand, and it seems to have gone OK so far - that’s certainly how I buy, at any rate.

Such an easy app to use though, buying or selling, so easy to just add a bit here or there. The things I sell are genuinely described and feedback good so far.

Buying, I love it for ‘occasion’ stuff - buy it cheap, and like as not sell it on again for the same price afterwards!

GeneHuntsCowboyBoots · 30/05/2023 19:37

I’ve sold on Vinted. Mostly new with tags stuff and a couple of other things that were fab condition, all pictured well and clean/ironed.

I’ve bought 2 things now and I was so disappointed. One was a Head bag - those that were popular in the 90’s, which I thought I’d buy for nostalgia to take swimming. It was advertised as excellent condition but the lining on the inside at the bottom was all ‘melted’ and sticky and it wasn’t clear. Then the other was as a black dress to go over leggings. It arrived and it was either actually grey or massively faded. It went straight in the charity bag. I should have followed it up but didn’t as I was ill.

Anything else I’ve seen has been (IMO) massively overpriced, yet when I’ve sold my stuff, it’s always been really cheaply in comparison!

Sorry, that’s no help but as others say, maybe only search for BNWT in future.

Honestly it’s very unlikely I’ve bought a genuine necklace, but it was sold as genuine with all hallmarks displayed and more provided when asked, so I’m looking forward to seeing what arrives 😂

I would never part with more than I’m willing to lose on these sites, and I’m dubious about buying trousers or jeans as you can never be sure of the fit before you try. I did however buy a beautiful designer real leather skirt which arrived perfect and would have cost 10 x what I paid for it if it were new!

Bapbap45 · 30/05/2023 20:05

Great advice on here, I'm going to start narrowing my searches to new with tags etc. There is some obvious cheeky fuckery on there, but you can just swipe through.

My daughter was favouriting a load of clothes the other day for me to look at, and the hassle I've had since! Sellers spamming me demanding to know if I'll buy etc. That's very off-putting. But I'm obviously just ignoring.

I also hate that we can only narrow searches to Boys or Girls, before filtering to categories. You can't just go to tshirts, as far as I can see.

Bapbap45 · 30/05/2023 20:06

(in the kids section I mean)

powerrangers · 30/05/2023 21:09

I'm suspicious of the number of items 'worn once'

SunnySaturdayMorning · 29/05/2023 18:48

Just use Shein. Cheap and pretty nice stuff 😊

Cheap because it's made in a sweat shop. And yay to adding more crap fast fashion into the equation.

Badbudgeter · 30/05/2023 21:19

I’ve had some great bits but I’m really picky. I don’t pay more than £10 for anything and choose good brands. I got a new £90 monsoon dress, tags on for £15 by the time you add on postage plus fees.

ErnestCelendine · 31/05/2023 08:01

Another vinted fan here - a PP mentioned bundles for kids and that's how I got my DC a load of clothes for residential. Probably spent a tenner including postage and got a load of leggings and tees that I didn't mind getting spoilt on the trip.

eveoha · 24/08/2023 14:06

I’m a long time user of EBay - and occasionally of Vinted - I would say CAVEAT EMPTOR re both as ‘customer service ‘ for both us virtually none existent - have had a few good buys though but reigning in spending on these sites as so many dishonest sellers 👍🏿😐☘️

HappyMe6 · 31/03/2024 17:46

I’m from the other end of the scale I sold new item obv very good condition as new no tags I always put six or more pics on clear pics I have excellent reviews but I had buyer contact me showing me the item was damaged( I asked for photo) obv! As certainly wasn’t damaged when I wrapped it nor was parcel damaged as I asked her! Now I think the item she showed me was a replica of my item but an old version in fact her worn out one. Yet when I sold it to her she pressed ok and completed so in my eyes everything was ok hours later I get a message mines not new as I had said. She’s contacted the site they say it’s between her and me and they cannot do anything! I’m getting messages from her what would you do! She has no reviews on her profile

Precipice · 31/03/2024 18:29

@Bapbap45, you can change it in your privacy settings so that sellers can't see when you favourite.

Screamingabdabz · 31/03/2024 18:36

I really enjoyed Vinted at first but the stench of those horrible laundry boosters in so many of the parcels got too much. They just don’t wash out either. I’ve given up.
