What's the one single thing a government could do to make your life better?

verdantverdure · 29/05/2023 15:14

Mine?

Rejoin the EU.

It the single most powerful lever any government could employ.

It makes the country significantly better off at a stroke and improves all kinds of situations, growth, investment, labour shortages, farming, fishing...

What's yours?

So our ageing population will eventually over time cause smaller population once we have few boomers left and my generation X become the OAPs, will this mean more housing becoming available longer term? Would we end up with an excess of propery if we build in the short term?

Balanced against the need for homes now I don’t see the future prospect of possibly having excess property as a massive issue myself.

In answer to the OP - specifically this government - all I want them to do is call a general election.

There’s nothing they could promise me that I would believe they were capable of ‘delivering’. (Bloody hate that overused soother)

doingitforyorkshire · 29/05/2023 17:02

More funding for mental health services, and more training/support for mental health crisis for emergency workers. More funding, pay, staff for emergency services, more significant penalties/punishment for those who assault/abuse emergency workers.

PintoMilk · 29/05/2023 17:02

Stay out of the EU. The low unemployment has really helped me jobs wise, employers wanting to offer flexible working etc to keep staff due to the shortage. Great for me as single parent working full time.

I'd like them to raise the tax bands, they are punishing hard work.

doingitforyorkshire · 29/05/2023 17:03

More than one I know but they are on an even par and hard to choose between.

Otherland · 29/05/2023 17:03

UBI.

determinedtomakethiswork · 29/05/2023 17:05

Rejoin Europe
Massive building scheme for social housing
Landlords to have a license and regular checkups by the council
Open up schools and colleges for night classes at an affordable cost so that people can become socially mobile and so that people can resit GCSEs and still work in the day
Compulsory purchase on abandoned buildings
The option to get paid weekly instead of monthly, especially if you are young. A low wage is almost impossible when it's paid monthly. Or, as I believe they do in the United States, you can be paid every two weeks and at a different interval to your partner so that every week money is coming into the family.

Free childcare at all ages

Pass the Kept Animals Bill that Parliament cancelled last week which would have helped billions of animals from cruelty in Factory Farming, Live Exports, Puppy Farms, Illegal Import of Animals, Zoo Animals, Fish and many more.

Just cancelled.

Wow. I didn't know this. Absolutely disgusting and upsetting.

BarelyLiterate · 29/05/2023 17:21

1, Rejoin the EU, to reinstate my freedom of movement.

2, Cut my income tax to increase my disposable income.

3, Sort out the NHS & GP services.

2 & 3 Are not contradictory. The NHS is not underfunded. It is badly run, organisationally dysfunctional and reliant on antiquated processes & IT systems. It needs structural & operational reform, not more money.

ToK1 · 29/05/2023 17:25

@BarelyLiterate

It absolutely is underfunded.

Structural reform won't attract more staff either

Whatt · 29/05/2023 17:27

Take me out of mouldy temporary accommodation and let me rent a council property.

Alphabeaters · 29/05/2023 17:28

But then the housing crisis causes ridiculous house prices. You can't get a 3 bed house here for less than £400,000 which then equals a ridiculous mortgage and 2 full time employees struggling to make ends meet @ToK1
So maybe I should have said "fix the housing crisis"!!!

BertieBotts · 29/05/2023 17:30

I think it's social care; fix/fund that properly.

That would take a massive strain off the NHS meaning the budgets could be reallocated to stuff like dealing with everyday GP care and mental health support.

That would have a knock on effect on everything else in society, if it was done properly.

ToK1 · 29/05/2023 17:30

@Alphabeaters

How would the govt fix private house sales?

People pay the market price

dancinginthesky · 29/05/2023 17:33

Whatt · 29/05/2023 17:27

Take me out of mouldy temporary accommodation and let me rent a council property.

Still mouldy in a huge amount of cases but the permanence does at least allow you to start throwing your own money at the problem trying to fix it

Don't expect it to be much or any better- beyond permanent

BertieBotts · 29/05/2023 17:33

Social care for both elderly and disabled, I mean.

So often this is the unpaid work of women and if somebody is unlucky enough not to have someone, then tough luck to them. At the same time, many women are stuck in carer roles and should be properly compensated and/or given the choice to do something else if they want to.

Hattifattene · 29/05/2023 17:33

Rejoin the EU. Then our businesses manufacturing and services can trade and we can pay for all the things we need ( housing , food, childcare)

Xiaoxiong · 29/05/2023 17:37

Rejoin the EU. Would reduce our costs at work (which increased purely due to additional regulatory burdens from leaving), we would pay more tax, and there would be more money for all the things everyone on this thread desperately needs.

imjustanerd · 29/05/2023 17:42

Fund public services properly

Freshfoods · 29/05/2023 17:46
  1. Pay social workers a lot more, give them a decent workload, and maybe we wouldn't read about the horrific child murders that keep happening.
  1. Fund the NHS properly, or move to a system like that of France and Germany.
  1. Rejoin the EU.
  1. Sort out early years childcare, with government funded nurseries, available to all children either free of charge or for a minimal fee.
  1. Stop utility companies making massive profits and give consumers a good deal.
  1. Build more social housing and make sure repairs are carried out on time and to a high standard.

These are off the top of my head, I'm sure I can think of more.

DreamingofTimbuktu2 · 29/05/2023 17:55

CarCrazy · 29/05/2023 17:01

This!

Last time they did this we got Truss so be careful what you wish for

Xiaoxiong · 29/05/2023 17:56

@Hattifattene what a cross post!

MotherOfRatios · 29/05/2023 18:01

Tackle the housing crisis, as this really does impact people's health etc

I've spent over £1k on therapy because my housing situation makes me so depressed and it impacts my productivity at work.

cushioncovers · 29/05/2023 18:05

Sort the NHS out so we don't have to wait so long for help and it's not a postcode lottery for getting certain meds.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 29/05/2023 18:10

Fund public services properly.

For my personal situation especially those that would help my youngest daughter - SENd education, transport for it (currently having to drive her the hour each way every day to the only school she can go to because of the lack of funding has caused the taxi company to bail out), and the other services that would have helped physio, respite, decently funded childcare so that anywhere would take her.

In reality I’d just be delighted if they committed to stopping attacking disabled people’s benefits and services.
