What's the one single thing a government could do to make your life better?

Mine?

Rejoin the EU.

It the single most powerful lever any government could employ.

It makes the country significantly better off at a stroke and improves all kinds of situations, growth, investment, labour shortages, farming, fishing...

What's yours?

Why Leeds or Manchester? Why not Newcastle or Sunderland?

Room102 · 31/05/2023 22:35

I totally agree @Room102 The UK has some phenomenally capable, if not world class people in these fields, and yet our brand of doing politics is so toxic, they don’t want to stand for election or even join a political party. I have felt so desperate about all of these issues - energy security, food security, disabled rights, business strategy, I considered it, but as an ethnic minority female heading towards retirement, I’m not sure I have the energy to deal with the truth twisters. There are some good politicians in the mix, but how they keep themselves going is anyone’s guess.

Depressing, isn't it @CheeseTouch ?

Everybody with integrity who would be capable wouldn't touch it with a bargepole. Why would those successful in their careers already give up their privacy and subject themselves and their families to abuse and danger, and give up permanent well-paid careers for the potential for a lower paid, short-term contract? And deal with that toxic work environment. It's not going to happen, so only the dregs go into politics. Either they are independently wealthy but rather dim people on a power trip or trying to use it as a stepping stone to other work, or they are people with none of the real skills and expertise we need because we won't pay enough to get them (I'd cut the number of MPs to 1/3 and triple their salaries, most are pointless windbags anyway).

I don't blame you though for not wanting to do it. Nobody who would do a decent job of it wants to do it. It is one of the sadnesses of democracy that pretty much anybody who puts themselves forward will be exactly the wrong people, and should be automatically disqualified simply for doing so. 😆

Why Leeds or Manchester? Why not Newcastle or Sunderland?

Or Sheffield?

It is disappointing to see a thread like this - and so many others so not an attack on you OP! I mean the responses more tbh - with so many demands but nobody thinking about any type of coherent plan in terms of "how would you actually achieve this? How will it be paid for?"

To be fair @Room102 I asked people what a government could do to improve their lives, not how to pay for it.

I agree with you on the long term planning front. There needs to be little jam today though otherwise it's just nonsensical to current voters.

(Like when Tory politicians say we'll see the benefit from Brexit in 50 years, when most of us will be dead.)

Yes, that's true, that was what was asked. I guess I just think it makes no sense really out of context of the bigger picture and how it will all be funded or any type of long-term plan.

Ahhahaaa yes, like when the "Minister for Brexit" couldn't come up with a single benefit about it. But again, not remotely a surprise, it was completely obvious it was an absurd idea from the very start.

Stop this MPs "expenses" shenanigans. They have their own home where they live in their constituency. If they need to go to London for government matters they stay in a purpose built halls-of-residence type place, with office space for working, and a simple bedroom and lounge. They get paid one salary they have to live off and petrol money for driving to and from their constituency.

NHS, Teachers, Police, Carer home staff, etc paid enough to attract and retain workforce at capacity.

Tenner paid upfront for each NHS appointment. If you turn up for your appointment you get your tenner back. If you turn up but you're rude to other Patients or Staff you forfeit your tenner. If you don't follow medical advice given you forfeit your tenner. If you don't turn up you forfeit your tenner.

Shop assistants and DJs banned from using "tannoy voice" when talking over the speakers and must speak in their normal voice.

All public spaces/kids soft play/shops/pubs etc etc have a Goverment employed sniper. If there's anyone too loud/obnoxious/not controlling their kids/being a general arse then you can text a certain phone number with a code for your location (like Pay and display parking by text) and is there's enough complaints about any one person the Sniper gets the nod to take them out.

This weather we're having now but all year round.

Free pizzas in Wetherspoons on a Friday.

Robyn847 · 01/06/2023 22:19

Ahh. I've realised you said what's the one single thing. Pizzas in spoons it is then.

*They are all being passed as separate bills. So not cancelled.

If it had been kept as one bill opposition parties were going to turn it into a political protest over hunting.*

How @mellongoose?

Multiple private members bills for each single issue. All accepted by government.

I think something to do with how hunting hounds are kept was going to spark amendments on the entire hunting row. But I might be wrong about this bit.

verdantverdure · 13/06/2023 11:59

I keep meaning to look into it @mellongoose.
