not to share my table at outdoor cafe

Went to my favourite cafe with my lovely dog for a relaxing Sunday morning brunch fry up.
All the tables were occupied, so we stood feeling a bit self-conscious waiting for about 20 minutes for a table to become free. In the meantime, a kind couple did ask if I wanted to share their table, but I didn’t want to disturb their relaxing morning so I said thanks for the offer but it’s ok.
So, eventually a table became free so I left my bag there to reserve it and went inside the cafe with the hound to order. When I was queuing up to order a woman asked if I had finished with my table so I said no I have just arrived. She then said are there many of you (obviously not) or can we share your table?
I said Sorry I have been waiting for a table and I would rather have it to myself.

AIBU?

I am amused that the OP had us all fooled at the start that she was a meek little people-pleaser, standing up for herself for the first time ever. She is clearly a brazen entitled CF. Well played OP!

How the actual fuck has a thread about a complete non-incident run to 25 pages and turned so nasty.

Some of you could start a fight in an empty room.

Well you say that, but I witnessed someone do exactly this in Kent. Needless to say the people who were at the table were not pleased. Reader. It turned ugly. I'm surprised the seat stealer got away without serious injury tbh. It was interesting viewing though.

Well if I ever find myself in Kent with a bunch of entitled Neanderthals then I'll worry about it, but that's what the police are for. Until then I'm sitting at the table even if you insist upon doing your best Regan impression.

I don't suppose it's exclusive to Kent. Anyway they got the restaurant owner involved and seat stealer was removed. Probably because it was easier. And the owner didn't want a violent incident on his premises. Looks like you like living life on the edge though. Enjoy that.

If it was a table for two YANBU.

As it was a table for 6, depends- how large was the other party? One woman YABU, party of 4 YANBU.

Similar has happened to us, we said yes though and wished we hadn’t as there were loads of them, they were noisy! We left!

Very entitled of you to think you have the right to join paying customers at their table. You don't.

Of course they do! What mad rule book are you using? 😀

Did you want me to pay your bill as well?😂

Most people are not so barbaric or staggeringly selfish as you apparently are and are perfectly reasonable human beings who are aware that the cafe isn't their own private space and are willing to share a table in a public space when necessary without feeling the need to vomit everywhere or start a fight.

That's right. I'm an absolute animal. You definitely don't want to squeeze up next to me 😁

I'll take my chances and ignore the snarling but I might bring a poncho, just in case.

You might need a bit more than a poncho. My eating / table habits go well beyond snarling. Really you should pay me for the experience rather than trying to steal it for free. ☺️

Lunch and a show? I'm in!

AnarchoTyrannosaurus · 29/05/2023 19:16

Fine. You'll have to hose yourself down afterwards. Jeez, the length people go to to get their kicks.

😂

Thanks, OP

you have made me decide that if I ever encounter a table hugger like you, I’ll just say “oh dear, what a pity” and sit down.

public seats ina public place - fair game for all customers. Rude and anti social to take up 6 seats for 1 person

The OP has made ME decide I won't even do THAT now. If I see a table with seats available on it/around it, I will sit down on it. I won't be asking permission from some entitled individual who thinks they have the right to hog a 6-person table, because "dats mah ooman rights innit?" Wink

Nope ... I shall just sit down on it.

EbonyRaven · 29/05/2023 19:18

*sit down AT it! Grin

Justyouwait · 29/05/2023 19:18

You'll probably find yourself sitting in it if you sit next to me.

Just like the honeymoon scene in Sally4Ever.

Oh what did you say. I missed it.

PollyThePixie · 29/05/2023 19:34

That was a really mean thing to do Op.

Speermint · 29/05/2023 19:42

YABU to think you can just leave your handbag to reserve a table. If I’d arrived after you and seen a handbag left on the table, I’d have handed it in as a lost item and sat at the table myself. Who on earth just leaves their handbag unattended on purpose?!

CaffeineAndCrochet · 29/05/2023 19:44

😂

I love how someone will always find something new to be outraged by hundreds of posts into a thread.

UniNameChange · 29/05/2023 19:44

I went to a cafe yesterday and got the last empty table. I was on my own and it was a table for six. Now I was just getting a quick coffee and was done in under ten mins so actually if someone had asked I would have happily shared. As long as they sat there in silence.

but on a busy bank holiday Sunday I observed the idiots on another large table had finished their brunch. The waiter cleared their empty plates, they all asked for glasses of tap water and then got a board game out! Playing a board game in a busy cafe with no available tables while not even eating or drinking! 🙈🤷‍♀️

I did this yesterday (well rucksack actually) because you need to tell them your table number when you order. If I didn’t do that by the time I ordered someone else might be sat there. What else do you do if you’re on your own? Because I tell you when there’s a group of six people or a family they don’t all go and queue up…..some people stay sat on the table.

I'd call the police if I saw you running off with someone elses handbag. 🚔👮
