To think I deserve more compensation?

We were due to go on a cruise holiday and the flight we were on was cancelled so we missed the boat. The holiday company have said they will refund us the cost and give us each £300 in their company vouchers.

I am thinking that £300 of vouchers isn’t very much for us now having taken a weeks holiday for nothing. Sat at an airport all day on the day we were meant to go and the following day had to wait to hear what was happening.

AIBU for thinking we should get more? And if so how do I go about it?!

So you get a full refund and £600 in vouchers? I don't think that's to bad tbh. Presumably the cancellation was unavoidable?

BonnieGlasses · 28/05/2023 10:04

Er no I don't think you deserve more than a full refund and a very generous amount of vouchers!

sunflowerdaisyrose · 28/05/2023 10:06

I think you deserve more too!

Neighboursnumber1fan · 28/05/2023 10:07

Can you not cancel your leave from work and save it to go another time?

Changeling78 · 28/05/2023 10:12

When ours was cancelled, we booked another straight away. As we were on the phone to the travel company getting the refund, we asked if anything else was leaving and we had to leg it across the airport to get it. Have you checked to see if something else is available so your week isn’t wasted?

Birdsongsinging · 28/05/2023 10:15

Thanks @Changeling78 . We were due to go on the Friday but it kept being delayed and at midnight they said they would try and find hotels but would need bussed to other cities as none available. So we went home.
They said they would contact us the next day so we didn’t know until then we couldn’t go. We did look for alternatives but couldnt find anything available.

No - have to take it now so none left for another holiday later.

It’s not that generous. The refund is for something we paid for and didn’t get.

so now we have £300 for a full day at the airport, another day doing nothing and no holiday and no leave left to take.

How much are you suggesting you should get? £600 plus refund sounds pretty fair to me.

ilovesooty · 28/05/2023 10:19

The company has fairly compensated you. The fact that your employer won't let you rearrange your AL isn't their problem.

Birdsongsinging · 28/05/2023 10:21

Surely most people can’t rearrange leave? You book your leave in advance when it doesn’t overlap with other people.

This is actually my main reservation about booking a cruise. Was the flight booked as part of the deal through the cruise line? They should really have flown you to the next port, so you could meet the ship there.

I'm very sorry you've missed out on your holiday though - could you get onto something like Lastminute.com, and book yourselves a slightly shorter break leaving tomorrow?

It’s not £600. It’s £300.

No, in general airlines are not responsible for follow-on costs or compensation. You may be entitled to additional compensation if it was to an EU country, but it doesn't sound like it was.

You said £300 each.

ICalledYouLastNightFromGlasgow · 28/05/2023 10:25

It seems reasonable compensation to me. Was there an option to get on the cruise at a later port? I guess it's the risk of a cruise a bit rather than a hotel or self catering. I hope you manage to make the most of your time off, at least the sun has come out!

Riverlee · 28/05/2023 10:26

It’s not the holiday company’s fault you’ve used all your leave. Can you book something for Monday-Friday so you have a holiday?

Birdsongsinging · 28/05/2023 10:31

Yes, so I get £300!

It was all booked together but I think they couldn’t get us to the next port in time and it was only a weeks cruise. They didn’t offer that as an option even.

I can see if e.g. you work on a production line or in a shop or whatever you wouldn't be able to cancel leave as they would have arranged cover and not need any more staff, but most office jobs would let someone cancel leave and come back to work I think.

Birdsongsinging · 28/05/2023 10:36

PriOn1 · 28/05/2023 10:33

You might be entitled to compensation from the airline. Have you looked into that?

Thank you that is really helpful!

If this happened to me, then I would let my boss know and return to work! I wouldn't sit at home doing nothing! And yes, as long as there was some cover, I would be able to take the leave another time.

PinkFootstool · 28/05/2023 10:39

Your travel insurance should be compensating you. That's why you have to have a specific policy for a cruise....
