Currently have an Audi A4 Avant which I love but it’s on its last legs now. I was thinking of getting another newer one but fancy a change.

My criteria is:

Big enough for pram
Lots of leg room
Fits 2 isofix seats in the back
Good on fuel
Comfortable for long trips
Has a good amount of tech
Looks cool!

I currently have a BMW X4 - diesel. Looks fantastic. V comfy, drives great. But it is a bit bulky - bonnet is huge.

The BEST car I have had of this ilk is the Mercedes GLC, absolutely fantastic. Various specs but all good tech on, if you get a premium you get the glass roof too. Lots of cabin & boot space but it's not as cumbersome to park as some of the others.

Greenvelvetdress · 25/05/2023 21:43

VW Tiguan. We absolutely love it. Loads of room, great boot, had ours for years now.

Vieve1325 · 25/05/2023 21:44

Love love love my Hyundai Santa Fe.

Comes in 5 or 7 seater - I chose 5 with huge boot. I needed a car that could tow the horse and carry all her gear but be smart enough for driving for work.

I really wanted a Range Rover - but all around me folk were having reliability problems with them and I just didn’t want to take the risk.

Tr1skel1on · 25/05/2023 21:44

Absolutely! Ancient Vauxhall Zafira, my babies are now doing a level's and GCSEs. Spare parts cost next to nothing, best car I've ever had.

ConsuelaHammock · 25/05/2023 21:46

You didn’t mention price ! That’s probably the most important factor . What can you afford ? That would be my starting point.

ChiChaNaYubi · 25/05/2023 21:46

Thanks for all the recommendations! I’ve had a lot of fun on cinch nosing around all these suggestions!

I think I still might be an Audi wanker but have definitely been drawn to a few others. I’m going to look at finding some local for a test drive.

I recently sold my fiesta and bought a juke. Hands down the worst car I've ever owned.

It rattles and creaks and clicks and ticks. The build quality is appalling.

I kept my golf 10 years and my fiesta 9 years. I'd get rid of this heap of junk tomorrow if I could. Definitely won't have it two years.

Shame because it's a great size and I like being a bit higher up.

I loved my two Toyota Auris hybrids. Sadly they no longer make them but I’d buy a low mileage second hand one in a heartbeat. Beautiful cars.

i share the love for the Toyota Auris hybrid. I have an estate 1.9 petrol and I think it may be the best car I have had. The boot was one of the biggest in that size of car when bought. It cruises easily at high speed on long motorway journeys. We travel from Scotland to Cornwall every year in it and it eats up the miles. MPG is roughly 50, which is good, as I know how fast it is travelling! It can do 60mph
Ours is coming up to 7 years old, 98k and I don’t recall needing anything replaced apart from tyres.

Sleepy86 · 25/05/2023 22:25

VW Tiguan. I've just got a new R Line diesel and I love it! Really roomy inside, big boot for the pram, lots of tech, 50+ mpg and I think it looks really cool!

SchoolTripDrama · 25/05/2023 22:30

I have a brand new Kia Sportage in the new style and sadly, no I wouldn't.
It looks great. But it has this awful feature which turns your steering wheel slightly whenever you cross the centre line (which of course you need to sometimes ie: parked cars, going into a turn lane etc) and even though it's a very gentle 'nudge' it's bloody dangerous! You can of course switch it off BUT this has to be done for every journey if you want it off! You can't turn it off completely.

Also, the boot is tiny! I used to have a new Ford Puma which had an astonishingly large boot for a hatchback! (And a sunken sink with drain in the boot, bizarrely!) Any Golfers looking for a new car, look at the Puma! You'll be able to stand your club carrier upright in the boot....

Audi Q2 here.
Great on fuel
Plenty legroom back and front.
Big boot
Comfy
Looks good.

Had it a year and I still love it.

Ohhhh how I miss my Q2 😢

CharlotteStreetW1 · 25/05/2023 22:35

Well I absolutely love my Kia Picanto but, apart from being okay on fuel, it fits none of your criteria 😂

Ford Kuga. Best car I've ever had.

We chose it because it has really good legroom in the back and DD is tall.

Comfortable to drive, can't think of any tech it doesn't have. Big boot.

Kuga vote here too

chupachucks · 25/05/2023 22:37

Toyota Corolla hybrid (self-charging) estate (called sports) go for Excell edition features make a huge difference.

Brilliant mileage, 10 years warranty or 100,000 miles for both new and used. Most reliable cars on road, super comfortable. Tech and safety features are second to none.loads of room iny 1.8.

Amazingly comfortable to drive and relaxing.Even petrol heads I know have tried mine and we're very surprised they liked it.

I could afford a lot more expensive cars but can't see the point.

DailyMaui · 25/05/2023 22:40

I have a new Kia Sportage. I had a Kia Sportage 13 years ago and hated it more than any other car I have ever owned. Even told the guy in the showroom how much I hated that car. 'They've come a long way" he said. I was sceptical, but I liked the look of the new car, the reviews were good and we knew the dealer so could get a very good deal.

He was not wrong. This one is bloody brilliant. Love all the tech - LOVE the giant info screen like a little spaceship, there's loads of room for the very tall teens in the back (and they are most appreciative of their own heated seats), large boot with lots of hidden cubby holes under the boot floor, very smooth drive, economical, I've done some mad mileage recently for work/taking DD to various Uni's scattered across the country and it is a really comfortable car.

No one is more surprised than me about this.

Muddygreenfingers · 25/05/2023 22:43

Volvo V90. I absolutely adore it. Boot space for days. Comfortable. Adaptive cruise and auto steer. Great on motorways.
I'd always go for an estate over an SUV though. I like being lower down.

I have a Subaru Outback, it's an AWD estate car, I absolutely adore it. It's the 3rd one I've had and I don't think I'd have anything else. They're ultra reliable and safe, top class off-road and for winter driving, the boot is gigantic and I think they look good.

Sagedragon · 25/05/2023 23:07

We just got a VW T-Roc, best car I've ever driven. So comfortable, the boot is a great size, and it's quite economical on fuel too.

Spectre8 · 25/05/2023 23:17

I have skoda octavia 2019 1.5tsi

Huge boot, so much foot space for passengers and driver. Its incredibly spacious.

The doors all open to pretty much 90 degrees, its a family car and they did this so you have more room to get car seat in and out...its those little details that matter sometimes.

Looks like a BMW from the front hehe think its the grill shape thats why.

Economical on fuel and parts are reasonably priced if u ever have to change anything.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/05/2023 23:24

Hyundai i10. I love it. On my second.

Divorcedalongtime · 25/05/2023 23:27

I drive a big pick up truck so good on fuel doesn’t apply… but park, bicycles, anything I want I can bring along.

tatteddear · 26/05/2023 06:52

I love my Ford Puma. Might be too small fit you but look at the kuga which is the bigger version. It's honestly the best car I've ever had.

StillWantingADog · 25/05/2023 18:45

Our Hyundai Ioniq 5 arrived today. It’s very cool indeed and very spacious.

it’s electric (our second EV), intrigued why you won’t consider electric. If you don’t have offstreet parking, I understand.

EVs are way overpriced, slow charging, people dont have time to piss about waiting hours for a milkfloat to charge up when you could refuel in under 5mins and have upwards of 400+ range and not have to worry about range impacted by lights, AC et al.

Also, the massive environmental carnage needed to make the batteries undoes the whole "green" bullshit ethos of this crates. They are nothing more than BS virtue signalling cars with no green credentials at all. Any Google research will show how polluting they are before they are even assembled. Fuck that shit.

OP - I have a RAV4 Hybrid. Brilliant, reliable and doesnt need hours to refuel or charge like stupid EVs.

StillWantingADog · 26/05/2023 07:44

@HelplessSoul you literally don’t know what you’re talking about. They’re not particularly green overall (the green option is no car at all) but create zero emissions, save money in the long run and no EV owner I know has sat about for hours waiting for it it to recharge, ever.

ChiChaNaYubi · 26/05/2023 07:48

I’d love an electric car but we don’t have anywhere to charge it and I do a lot of long distance driving!
