To be annoyed by a note left on my car?

I went to pick my children up from their nannies in the evening. The street they live on is on a bend and on one side of the bend is two houses with two drives so you can't park there, the bend in front of MIL house has room to park but is always full as there are no drives for this area, as you follow the road around there are two streets where there is space on the road and most of these houses also have drives.

For context I'd had to park quite far down from the house I was actually going too but made sure not to block any drive or any house opposites drive. I left my car half on the pavement half off the pavement so if had a pram they could fit through. Didn't think anything of it as there were literally no other parking spaces and there was a car just opposite me on the other side of the road or else I would of gone there.

When I've come back (I'd been 30 minutes max) As I've been driving a piece of paper has come up my windscreen nearly flying into my vision, so when I've gotten home I've looked and there's a snobby not telling me to be more considerate. Absolutely baffled. I hadn't parked diagonally or in anyway I would find offensive in the slightest, was blocking no one in. I pay road tax and it's not private property.

I have young children and I'm pregnant so this has really rubbed me up the wrong way as I had to park a fair walk from my MIL in the first place.

I don't understand why leave a note and not just come and speak to me in person ( even though I honestly can't see what I did wrong) I understand it's annoying to have people park in front of your house as I live on a public street but that's life.

It's really wound me up. I know most of it is probably pregnancy hormones but AIBU to be annoyed by this? Or would this annoy anyone else.

Just needed a little vent.

Fine to be upset. But the Highway Code says you shouldn’t park on the pavement (and it’s illegal in London). And road tax doesn’t exist. You pay a tax based on vehicle emission.

About the road tax. I know about the pavement but this street is virtually impossible to park on unless you go onto the pavement.

You say a pram could fit past. Could a double buggy? A large wheelchair? A mobility scooter? Would visually impaired person using a cane reasonably expect a car to be blocking the pavement? If not then your parking was rude and inconsiderate.

Come on. You parked in an inconsiderate way and got a note.

Then you park somewhere else! Are you either that entitled or that stupid that you think because you can’t park legally the solution is to park illegally rather than find a legal parking space?

Had you genuinely left enough room for both pedestrians of varying widths and wide lorries/cars.

I have been that mum with a double buggy who has had to go onto the road so I will always leave as much room as possible if I have to go on the pavement which as explained this is a narrow road so if I went on the road it would of been difficult for a car to come through without going into the pavement on their side and with the electric box there it's a bit difficult.

Lorries don't go down that road, or at least I have never seen one in the 4 years I've been around the area. It's like a little side street off a main road that bends around.

When I owned a huge transit van people would write notes all the time. People are stupid.

MovinGroovinBarbie · 24/05/2023 20:15

I can't get too wound up about cars half on the pavement as long as other cars and prams etc can get by. The main thing which people don't seem to think about is creating a bottleneck by parking directly opposite another car.

I often have to drive trucks to newbuild estates and many have residents living there before the building work completes - usually the construction site is at the very back, which I'm guessing is intentional so they don't have traffic passing through and residents don't have to see the work being done.

I'm amazed how many create bottlenecks despite knowing that trucks will need to pass through. I see this a lot in general and I always think that if I can't fit through a fire engine needing to access a property further into the estate has no chance.

Sorry. I am pregnant with SPD so I do find it hard to walk long distances. No the note was stuck right into my windscreen so it's not come up until I've been driving. No need to be rude at all.

Its a public road so carry on. I would park there every time now!

changewhale · 24/05/2023 20:16

Ok fine if you think your parking was genuinely OK and this person does it all the time then don't sweat it

There's a common denominator there

Why did you park half on the pavement rather than just on the road?

Depends on the road - if I parked all the way on my road traffic would be massively impeded.
Parking half-pavement is normal here.

dontlookbackyourenotgoingthatway · 24/05/2023 20:18

In Japan, street parking is illegal. You have to prove you've got off street parking before you're allowed a car.

We could learn a lot

AuntieJune · 24/05/2023 20:18

I wouldn't get too upset about it tbh. Parking on the pavement is very annoying but sometimes hard to avoid.

Do you do this trip regularly? Next time could you get MIL to watch out for you so you can stop outside and just get the kids straight in the car?

Thinkwhat · 24/05/2023 20:18

You shouldn’t have parked there. Most of the people on this thread agree you shouldn’t have parked there, but you keep arguing your position; aren’t interested in the comments; and would happily park there again. It begs the question, why did you post?

Fair point. I would of just rather they spoke to me in person and I would of had the conversation with them.

Fine if your city/town is built for it. Fine if the public transport system works to make it viable. Without those things, that system would be penalising the poor and making it harder for them to work.

Yes MIL does sometimes but normally I manage to park on the opposite end of the street where there is room to park. However tonight I needed to go in and speak to MIL so I just had to pop in quickly.

Throw the note away and forget about it.

Just avoid parking in that particular spot in future. The woman is obviously renown for leaving snippy notes on people’s cars, regardless of whether they’ve bumped their wheels onto the pavement or not.

We live on a road like you describe with very few driveways and all the cars parked out on the street.

Some people are very precious about the bit of road outside their house and are ridiculous if a random person parks there., storming outside and asking neighbours I don’t recognise this car!! Who’s car is this? 😂

No need to get upset about it x

I once got a ticket when I parked with my wheels on the grass verge of a pavement outside my sister’s in Sutton.
I didn’t actually realise it incurred a penalty but only in some areas I believe?

Never once stated I would park there again, i have however stated I do normally park at the opposite end where there is room but tonight the street was absolutely crammed. I have also in above comments said I fully get where people are coming from with the pavement.

people dont like it when you park on the pavement-if theres no signs/local council laws saying you cant then youre not doing anythng wrong

JustBeKindItsEasy · 24/05/2023 20:27

Guessing it’s because you parked on the pavement.
Poster probably didn’t see where you went to tell you in person but why would they go out of their way anyway.
Obviously it’s quicker for them to put a note on your car.
Next time don’t park on the pavement and if you don’t get a note then puzzle cracked.

Ooh no I’d rather a note I think. She’s probably a professionally outraged complainer and I wouldn’t want a showdown on the street with her with dc in tow.

Avoid parking outside her house like the plague.
