Does everyone get moths/mice?

Gah! Just spent a winter dealing with mice and moths. Just spent an afternoon realising I need to throw away a few bin bags full of stored clothes because of the mothy bastards. How common is it to always be having to deal with these things? Am I particularly minging?

@RaininSummer we had kitchen slugs in our old house! I remember being woken up by a bloodcurdling scream in the middle of the night- DH stepped on one with bare feet on his way to get a glass of water 😅

RaininSummer · 23/05/2023 18:46

My oh did that too. Revolting.

berryfull · 23/05/2023 18:54

The parasitic wasp thing is giving me hope!

Used to in our old place.
Not in our new place.

Fluffyowls · 23/05/2023 19:32

I've never had mice but caught moths and carpet beetles from living in a flat. Managed to get rid of the moths after a couple of house moves but the beetles followed us. I keep spraying the anti-moth/beetle spray when I see one.

NumberTheory · 23/05/2023 19:37

Had mice in 3 out of 5 homes I’ve owned. Apparently to do with age of home to some extent as the ancient ones had lots of ways for them to get in. Also shady gardens that encouraged snails which are prime mouse food.

Had moths in London and couldn’t get rid of them at all but they died off when we moved away.

Currently have ants and can’t get rid of them at all.

Esgaroth · 23/05/2023 19:38

Never had moths but currently have at least one mouse family under the kitchen cabinets. We're having pest control out in a few days to get rid of the furry little bastards as we've not had much luck ourselves.

booksandbrooks · 23/05/2023 19:41

The moth onslaught is relentless.
So were the mice until we got a cat.

TropicalMoon · 23/05/2023 19:48

Had mice in 2 rental flats we lived in, in London. It was horrible. They were not shy either. I was sat in the living room and saw something at the corner of my eye, one was just casually sniffing around. I couldn’t sleep properly for months, the fear of one crawling into bed with me kept me awake. We tried to get rid of them humanely but in the end had to call pest control (since our useless landlord wouldn’t help)
Never got mice or moths in our new build house.
We live in a Victorian terrace now & so far, we’ve not had them but we do get these weird beetles from time to time.

Allschoolsareartschools · 23/05/2023 19:53

Had a bloody awful time with mice last year. Then I suspect an old mouse carcass led to a load of bluebottles coming in. We had a mini plague of cluster flies last autumn as well. I've just started to notice a few more moths as it warms up. It's like a free for all sometimes & I consider myself very clean & tidy with no clutter so not sure what else I could do to prevent pests.
I used to really hate spiders but I don't care now, at least they're harmless & eat flies!

Arxx · 23/05/2023 19:57

Completely baffled by the amount of people living with mice 🙈 I’ve lived in the countryside for 20 years and never had a single mouse in the house or in the walls. I don’t think I’d ever sleep again!

HadleyVaughn · 23/05/2023 19:59

Carpet moths are definitely spreading.

In London almost everywhere I lived has had carpet moths. My work place has them. the office next door has them. these are really aggressive moths that don't just eat in the dark behind the furniture but in bold daylight infront of the windows

My grandparents lived in an area to the mid/north of England never had carpet moths ever. Two years ago one of their carpets was chomped to buggery.

Uk infestation I reckon.

Mice everywhere - town and country.

MarkWithaC · 23/05/2023 19:59

OldTinHat · 23/05/2023 17:51

I've had both and rats courtesy of next door.

Moths - get some parasitic wasps. Job done!

Mice - get pest control out. Job done!

Seriously, you can get wasps, like you can get bees by post? And what do they do/where do you deploy them exactly?

NooNakedJacuzziness · 23/05/2023 20:06

There was a thread recently about carpet moths and parasitic wasps were suggested. I googled them and they sound effective - they're tiny but target the moth larvae and lay their own eggs in them, which hatch even more wasps to eat the moth larvae. Sounds a bit gruesome but too small to notice (hopefully!)

DanceMonster · 23/05/2023 20:09

We had a mouse in our garage once. We’ve never had moths.

MargaretThursday · 23/05/2023 20:14

Only had mice in the loft once. Moths occasionally.

QueenImprov · 23/05/2023 20:17

We had moths in our old flat. Had to Chuck loads of clothes, get new carpets and that eventually got rid of them.

Now live in an older property full of inaccessible holes and so had nice a few times. Get pest control in as soon as you can, all the stuff you do yourself doesn't cut it IMO.

SirVixofVixHall · 23/05/2023 20:20

I am fighting a never ending battle against moths. Mice I have had, but rarely. More commonly I get Bank Voles, but they only seem to come inside in the Winter, and not every year. We had a Shrew for a while last year, he was very sweet.
I live rurally.

CabernetSauvignon · 23/05/2023 20:29

We've had mice recently, but we're hoping that we've got rid of them, at least for now. When DH spent substantial amounts at the local hardware shop on various means of dealing with them, the salesman told him there seemed to be a bit of an epidemic of mice locally as he was selling all his traps etc almost as soon as they came n.

Based on that experience, I can say:
Sonic mice deterrents - worked for a short time, then they came back and seemed happy to ignore them.
Humane traps: the bastards laughed at them and totally evaded them.
Standard mousetraps: caught one, but no more.
Poison: seems to be what did the trick. I know it's not necessarily approved round here, but when the alternative is leaving the mice to crack on, frankly I'm going for it.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 23/05/2023 20:33

We have tiny little mice in the garden wall. We also have a cat who spends hours patrolling that wall. The only mice in the house have been when we’ve failed to intercept the cat as she comes in.

Tigofigo · 23/05/2023 20:34

We have mice, moths and slugs. They get in through an air brick (slugs). Moths are the worst as they eat my clothes. Mice are generally in the walls or under floorboards. We can't get rid easily as we're in a terraced house and they can easily go from house to house underneath.

BitOutOfPractice · 23/05/2023 20:36

Well I live in a modern apartment on the 5th floor in a city centre so honestly? No! They’re not a sign you’re minging though.

riotlady · 23/05/2023 21:32

Never had mice but we do have two cats! Found some carpet moth caterpillars when we were moving out of our old flat

saltandpepper86 · 23/05/2023 21:41

We've never had either but I've probably just jinxed myself!

berryfull · 24/05/2023 10:09

It’s good to know I’m not alone!
