I’m just wondering who on earth cares? Can’t understand why this is such big news.

The number of politicians who are really crap has increased. In 2019, it was the worst quality cabinet I have ever seen. The Tory Party seem to have given up on their natural advantage and literally taken not their best but the absolute lowest part of the talent pool. Part of the reason Brexit was such a shit show is that you had people who had never done anything other than run a think tank or a magazine in their own tiny bit of Westminster where they had zero challenge. They weren't up to it.

This. Most of the competent ones left or were pushed out by Johnson, and for reasons best known to himself Sunak chose his cabinet from essentially the same pool which left him (with only one or two exceptions) with a body of incompetents, bigots and the corrupt who keep landing him with embarrassing problems. This is a cabinet which has been led by Johnson to believe that it is OK to lie and stonewall in Parliament rather than answer questions or account properly for their actions to the electorate.

If Sunak had any sort of character he would lay it on the line that he is not Johnson, and that incompetence and lying (including trying to get your civil servants to deal with your personal problems) will land ministers on the back benches. If he did that, he might actually stand a chance of re-election.

Clavinova

“Not to mention Angela Rayner twice using the 'scum' insult - including in the House of Commons chamber.”

Fairly accurate description of someone watching porn in the chamber and whilst serving on a select committee, I’d say.

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/05/2023 10:03

Or perhaps, Clavinova, Ms. Rayner should have stuck to his own description of himself, “a fucking idiot”.

Is the objection to Rayner's language because it is unfair on scum?

It’s because she’s Angela Rayner, she really gets under Tory women’s skin for some reason. Meanwhile they, of course, have the very lady like Andrea Jenkyns who literally shows the electorate her middle finger. An example to us all.

Rhondaa · 25/05/2023 12:54

'Fairly accurate description of someone watching porn in the chamber and whilst serving on a select committee, I’d say.'

Well yes but she didn't say 'someone watching porn whilst service on a select committee is scum' did she'? She said Tories are scum. Highly goady language and I don't doubt someone of her intellectual level could quite easily be provoked by her rant. She apologised, late rather than never, but let's not be like a pp and try to excuse this shit with silly 'It's unfair to scum tee hee' comments.

Roussette · 25/05/2023 13:03

Let's not forget it was tractor porn

The worst kind 🚜

From someone who regularly peppers posts with references to Sir Beer.

Get off your high horse.

TheHandmaiden · 25/05/2023 13:22

There was a far better exchange today on the current Home Sec when Yvette Cooper asked "what is she for?"

Then Robert Jenrick (again, better lawyer than Suella) fluffed his brief by admitting that resolving the asylum backlog might in the Government's view make the UK a more attractive place for asylum seekers.

Immigration is so incoherent because it's such a lie. It keeps increasing because of government policy and yet there is this dribble about migrants all the time. It could easily be changed. It never is. Who benefits from that?

Hmm saying Sir Beer is in no way excusing, minimising or even laughing at violent language such as 'scum' though is it?

TheHandmaiden · 25/05/2023 13:51

@Janiie - you would have a better line if Sir Beer had amounted to anything in criminal terms. As it is, the ex PM is being looked at again.

I don't even think Tory scum is confined to Angela Rayner - as a political insult it's been going around since the 1980s

Rhondaa · 25/05/2023 13:55

'I don't even think Tory scum is confined to Angela Rayner - as a political insult it's been going around since the 1980s'

Yes we know it didn't amount to anything Durham PC obvs sing from a different songsheet to the Met.

Oh I didn't say she invented 'scum', but a deputy leader repeating it in HOC is shite even by her standards.

TheHandmaiden · 25/05/2023 13:59

The police aren't supposed to be political and if they are, that would be wrong in either case, wouldn't it?

Rayner just used language that was common enough in the North of England; it may have annoyed some, but she apologized.

I don't buy the sensitive Conservatives - they have hides like rhinos in my experience.

Balls, no comment on Andrea ‘flip the bird’ Jenkins thought? If the word ‘scum’ had dropped out of one of your parties mouths you’d be repeating it like it was the most hilarious joke in the world.

Just admit (to yourself, not me… I don’t care that much) that you’re a hypocrite and drop the insincere act that you’re so superior and tutting at other people.

TheHandmaiden · 25/05/2023 14:11

What's also a bit tragic is that MPs from all sides of the house are pretty friendly with each other. Mostly.

The real snarling is done by party officers and spads. MPs are less tribal than stuff like this suggests. Brexit did pretty much stop that in its tracks, far less cross party working on bills for example.

Anyway, wasn't it Bevan who called the Tory Party lower than vermin? Can't say this is a very new narrative, and Bevan did some impressive things as a politician.

IClaudine · 25/05/2023 14:18

Oh god, are we back to banging on about Rayner's scum comment?

Cake at work not a party. Keir's beer. Ange's scum comment. What's next on the rota?

TheHandmaiden · 25/05/2023 14:20

Gary Lineker I think

I don't understand this comment, the Tories gave us Austerity, which because it went on for so long, has caused untold issues for the country, not least in education and NHS, esp the estate, equipment and staff.

They then gave us an EU referendum and then Brexit, followed by voting in May and then Bojo.

This idea the Tory party/Govt were full of competent MPs and ministers , pre 2019, just doesn't stand up to scrutiny.

countrygirl99 · 25/05/2023 14:38

It wasn't full but there were some. Most of them stood down at the last election.

TheHandmaiden · 25/05/2023 14:42

@Alexandra2001 - that was my comment and to respond, in terms of competency, all the things you describe were things very much wanted by the Tory party. They delivered them quite effectively and with a certain brutality but they did it. And how they did it was not very different from any other government.

Post 2019, you really did get some absolute c grade people in the Cabinet. That was Johnson because he couldn't bear the competition. I suppose many people will never know just how significant that will be for the Tory Party. They literally destroyed those who were competent and good at using the political system for their aims and replaced them with people who decided the civil service were the enemy. Now if you want to achieve anything in the UK as a politician then you need them. It's not a question of saying but I don't like them or they are the blob. They can deliver if you are clear. But if you are not very good then you get a really shitty outcome because you are fighting the system who delivered and organized the referendum or say, delivered austerity. Whether you liked those policies or not, they were delivered. Ministers got what they wanted.

This lot didn't know what they wanted. That's why it's gone so sour. No plan and no brains.

Why so much fuss over Stella Braverman?
pointythings · 25/05/2023 14:51

If you think the word 'scum' is violent language you need a thicker skin. And they think we're the snowflakes ❄️!

Alexandra2001 · 25/05/2023 16:21

@TheHandmaiden imho Austerity and how it was delivered, is responsible for almost all the problems we see and have seen in this country.

We basically slashed the mtce on our "house" and then wonder why the house is now falling to bits and costing far far more to put right than if we had kept up mtce.

No, i don't think a Lab or LD Govt, post 2015, would have continued Austerity .... only the Tories truly believe in a small state Govt and used the GFC to pursue it.

I find it amazing that Thatcher Ministers - Ken Clarke & Michael Heseltine are both considered moderate & competent in todays Con party.

To me, the current Tory Party is basically the same as they always been, its about them and their wealthy supporters, they ve never been interested in the UK, let alone its peoples, they give us just enough to keep the majority happy and always say one thing but do another, evidence? pretty much every social advancement we had they have opposed and have introduced none of their own.
Even today, childcare support is manipulated to favour the well off, meanwhile we pay for it.

No, I don't need a thicker skin thanks. It is offensive language that she belatedly apologised for. Stop enabling it and excusing it like so many others on here. Braverman gets constant pearl clutching for 'invasion', I think we all know who needs a 'thicker skin'.

And Andrea Jenkyns telling the british public to fuck off... anything on that?

Following that... she was appointed as a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State. 😲
At least Angela Rayner apologised. Andrea Jenkyns made a point of not apologising but saying "I'm only human" Hmm
Ok.. luv...
