I’m just wondering who on earth cares? Can’t understand why this is such big news.

Ok, it didn’t manage the NHS but provided the health related advice for the organisation to follow but naturally it was the Minister not Public Health England who came under fire as is always the case with the civil service.

Come on, everyone knows that Ministers in Johnson's government were only responsible for the office pot plants.

Johnson's ministers were not ever responsible for But Jezza or Sir Beer at all tbf.

This is just another big de-rail by you

Is there some reason you can't keep on topic?

But the Labour party were responsible for the Tory government cutting police numbers according to what the Home Secretary said on Monday.

Which I think was her defence for breaking the law.

Its amazing we are nearly 500 posts into the thread and not one of them has anything positive to say about the Home Secretary.

countrygirl99 · 23/05/2023 13:41

@jgw1 well that's the usual tactics. Divert and deflect.

Both Hancock and PHE were defendants in the Gardner and Harris case, and both had the claim upheld against them; the claim against NHS England was dismissed.

Hippyhippybake · 23/05/2023 13:45

Yes if I was a civil servant I would want to divert and deflect too rather than have any light shone on the asymmetry between the way ministers get absolutely flamed for asking a question while civil servants can be responsible for hideous incompetence and face no ramifications at all.

Please, just stop now, you're embarrassing yourself. Public Health England were so vilified the organisation was disbanded and completely restructured while they were still involved in managing the pandemic. The staff weren't even given the courtesy of being told first, it was announced in the media. (Many subsequently lost their jobs when contracts were brought to a premature end.)

The blame game has started: the downgrading of Public Health England

Perhaps it was inevitable, but I did think the Government would have waited a bit longer into the pandemic, before switching the political emphasis from: “How do we get out of this mess?” into “Who got us here in the first place?”

Seeing as PHE no longer exists I'm not sure that's a valid claim

lljkk · 23/05/2023 13:52

Rory Stewart considers SB a friend.
I like her dress sense.
Cassiana is a pretty middle name.

See, I managed THREE positive statements (!)

I just can't believe they don't want to tell us about all the wonderful things the Home Secretary has achieved in her time in office.

countrygirl99 · 23/05/2023 14:00

@jgw1 if she is competent there must be some big achievements. I have to admit I can forgive a few indiscretions if someoneis good at their job. Sort of a positive net worth. I'd rather someone a bit naughty but competent than useless but angelic. Sadly we seem to have naughty and incompetent.

lieselotte · 23/05/2023 14:31

Arightoldcarryabag · 22/05/2023 17:09

I think the main reason is that she is so deeply unpopular so people are desperate to bring her down.
Her behaviour is unbecoming of her position and is in previous times would have been a resigning matter.

I think people are so sick of this government that they are trying to force members out any way they can so this will gain traction and probably won't be dropped by the press or on socials until she goes.

This. Giving her a Cabinet job was a big mistake by Sunak.

People on here have said they've worked with her and she has few in the way of brain cells. Goodness only knows how she has qualified as a lawyer and got to the position she has.

TheHandmaiden · 23/05/2023 14:34

She was an extremely unsuccessful barrister, and does not claim to have any notable cases. She quickly became an MP, so perhaps that tells you a bit about her legal acumen.

TheHandmaiden · 23/05/2023 14:39

@lljkk - okay you floored me with Rory Stewart as they really are chalk and cheese. He's erudite and intelligent, diligent and listens. It's a shame that he isn't in the Tory party now but Johnson rewarded pure loyalty, so no Rory (fairly they disliked each other) and lots of Suella (because, well, she proclaimed her loyalty).

Asiatoyork · 23/05/2023 14:43

I mean if you can keep your job after leaking top secret confidential information the sky really is the limit

That’s so unfair - she was out of Cabinet for at least a week before she came back as Home Sec😜

Perhaps she did her law degree in private via zoom.

Hippyhippybake · 23/05/2023 15:13

That’s why I used the past tense for Public Health England. As I understand it nobody lost their job when it became the UK Health Security Agency and in the public’s eye it is Matt Hancock who was held responsible for the disastrous care home decision when he was acting on information supplied by PHE. I’m no fan of Hancock or Braverman as it happens but I would prefer that more attention was paid on the dire performance of so many government departments than distractions such as the current Suella issue.

ADarkInTheLightness · 23/05/2023 15:23

Actually it was the information provided by Public Health England on asymptomatic transmission that led to the decision. The body that runs the NHS.

Aye, right ye are.

AutumnCrow · 23/05/2023 15:25

Suella Braverman apparently went to Cambridge. Cambridge. Bloody hell.

Hippyhippybake · 23/05/2023 15:47

I did correct that to say that Public Health England was the organisation that provided health advice to the NHS and I was referring to early 2020. Did anyone lose their job when it was renamed?

Hippyhippybake · 23/05/2023 15:58

Suella was also a KC so clearly a very talented barrister indeed and quite obviously not “thick”.
