I’m just wondering who on earth cares? Can’t understand why this is such big news.

Yep her appearance at the NatCon was one step too far. Anyone who supports her really needs to have a good long hard think

I wouldn't be massively surprised if this speeding thing was leaked by Tories as a way to get rid of her after that. Even if people don't think it's serious, it's another breach of the rules by her, and Sunak can get rid of her if he wants.

Clavinova · 22/05/2023 22:56

She has recently used her position and privilege to try to avoid speeding points
Why do most people book the speed awareness course if not to avoid points on their licence?

CabernetSauvignon · 22/05/2023 23:20

She got her minion to lie for her and deny she had been caught speeding. Then she asked her civil servants to use government influence to spare her both the points and the embarrassment of having to sit through the speeding course knowing that she had just made the other participants' day and that they would inevitably be on the phone to the papers as soon as the course came to an end. She only took the points when they told her she couldn't have her private course. Then when this came out she put round stories that she only asked the civil servants for help in arranging the course, which implies that she's too stupid to understand the letter everyone else manages to cope with. And now she's directly refusing to answer questions about it all in the H of C.

None of it exactly covers her in glory, does it?

Braverman is fairly unique, however, in taking the points to try to avoid the embarrassment of going on the course, when her initial attempts to get out of both a non-private course and the points failed.

L1ttledrummergirl · 22/05/2023 23:41

I wouldn't be counting on her winning in an election. There are too many good people in that neck of the woods.

Are ylu suggesting a duel or a general election?

I’m suggested reasoned political debate.

Suggesting

She is in a senior position in the government and she has been shown attempting to find a way round the system used by everyone else. Sack her.

She asked a question, was told no, accepted it, and took the points. Nothing to see here.

Believe that and you'll believe anything.

TooBigForMyBoots · 23/05/2023 01:05

Let's assume that Suella meant no disrespect and didn't intend to break the ministerial code... 🦄

That would mean she has zero knowledge of a very broad range of laws. From How to Deal With a Speeding Ticket to How to Deal With Immigration. And complete ignorance of her own Ministerial Code thrown in.

Such a lax knowledge of the law is not a good thing in an Ex Attorney General. It's worse in a serving Home Secretary. She's incompetent and completely unsuitable to be in the Cabinet.

My sympathy to her constituents on this thread. Thanks

It's like an ERG reunion on here tonight isn't it Grin

Sadly they don't have any new tunes.

I don't think Beer Korma (or Keith, which I don't even understand as a joke) is his actual name so it's not really the same.

I've never called her Sue Ellen, but it is her name.

The reason that you don't understand the joke is possibly because it isn't funny.

One of the greatest brains of the current Tory party has announced he is standing down at the next election in order to go and find someone else to bully. I wonder why he is doing that?

More than happy to have a debate. Would you like to be the first to try and defend Braverman's record in government and perhaps provide some of her achievements as a minister.

Roussette · 23/05/2023 06:19

She got her minion to lie for her and deny she had been caught speeding.

Four times. Her SPAD lied 4 times. I've read a transcript of the conversation from April

Efacsen · 23/05/2023 06:56

The speeding offence was last summer when she was AG?

During this time both Robert Jenrick and Tom Tugenhat were also caught speeding - they both received temporary bans and fines

They both just quietly got on with it - no trying to sort out a more favoroable outcome, no denials, no fuss, no calls for their resignations

There's a lesson in that for someone

Sue Ellen has forgotten the golden rule of working with other people. He who makes your tea can also spit in it. She has trashed the efficacy and impartiality of the Civil Service too often and is a graceless, ignorant and *ist Home Secretary. May she receive all she deserves.

Do you get your co workers to find out if you can get it done in private and away from the public eye? and why would said staff lie and deny a speeding offence?

Anyway, she'll soon be gone or so much for honesty and accountability, which appears to be Sunaks "family values" moment.

I really dislike her and her morals but in thie particular case it is a storm in a teacup. She asked if she could attend the speed awareness course privately for security reasons. She was told no and therefore decided to take the penalty points instead.

Asking if she could attend a course privately doesn't seem unreasonable for someone who is the Home Secretary.

Totally agree with this.
I loathe the woman and she has done/said some appalling things. But it seems a perfectly reasonable question to ask in her position. She asked it, was told no, so took the points.

You are both missing the point - there's no problem in her asking - the problem lies in her asking civil servants to ask on her behalf/sort it out

Like me going into work and asking my junior doctors to sort out my speeding ticket/council tax/childcare/whatever People would rightly say that the NHS has better things to do

And secondly subsequently lying that there had not been a speeding offence at all

No, because her SPAD denied she'd even had a speeding penalty, so it smacks of keeping it all secret and away from the public.
Also, anyone i know who has done one of these, did it over zoom, as there are many different providers, its hard to believe she had to attend in person, thats not a requirement.

For me, it seems like she tried to keep the offence quiet, a spectacular fail!

She also tried to do it via zoom but with no video link and no name displayed. She was happy to do the course, she just didn't want anyone to know she was doing it.
