Is this incredibly racist or am I being sensitive

Have had to nc as incredibly outing.

I enquired about a blossom tree installation in my restaurant, someone got back to me with a quote and I said great what’s his timescales. He let me know a date and I told him it would be suitable but nothing yet agreed.
Next thing I know he says he requires a 50% deposit because he’s ordered the blossom for the tree.
I never asked him to order the blossom, never agreed that the work would actually be done and certainly didn’t agree to give him 50% upfront.

I’ve had to block him as he is continuously ringing and messaging me and is just being plain nasty, to both my husband and I.

I think he’s gone a step too far with this Facebook post though, the reference to scrubbing korma pans and polishing shoes just gets to me, I feel he’s being racist, we have an Indian restaurant but I don’t actually go/work there so he’s obviously made that up to be spiteful.

Of course he was racist, he’s also just an incredibly nasty piece of work from other things you’ve described. I’m sorry you’ve had to deal with that. I’d ignore the minimising on here, it’s very obvious what this man is.

Paradise404 · 22/05/2023 18:03

@Hugasauras also there's no such thing as korma pans! LOLOLOL

CrackerAndPudding · 22/05/2023 18:05

AliceOlive · 22/05/2023 17:58

I think he wanted to scam you.

There is definitely something fishy. A quick look into the company confirms he's using her personal Google profile to leave fake bad reviews for her restaurant and that his company is registered as "dissolved" with UK companies House.

Sounds like you dodged an even bigger bullet with him

PRMachine · 22/05/2023 18:06

Helloword · 22/05/2023 17:59

Why is it ok to call people thick? All kind of abuse is bad. People might be reading fast, busy with other things, also op didnt post everything in her OP and did a fair amount of drip feeding.

People you are calling thick are nor sitting on jury duty going through all the details carefully.

Racist/sexist or thick. You can choose.

I have not sat on a jury but according to many friends who have, yes you are right; these people are serving on juries all round the country.

Runningcrew · 22/05/2023 18:07

PRMachine · 22/05/2023 16:40

I wonder if people who can’t see it are racist apologists themselves or just a bit thick.

That’s what I’m wondering too. Stupid or racist?

OP, The shoe polish bit was insidiously racist too. I doubt anyone was polishing shoes in view of his “friend who checked on them” so it’s interesting that he made up those two things.

And yes it’s the fact because it’s a negative rant he chose to draw attention to things like their cultural background. It’s like the daily mail only mention “Pakistani paedophile rings” but if it’s white men they just say “men”.

He's an arse, but he sounds like a genuinely aggrieved arse.
It would be interesting to hear his side of things.

His side of the story is in his facebook rant.

Even if the OP had agreed to everything, had agreed a deposit (it’s not a proper quote unless all of the conditions are agreed,) his rant on facebook says everything about him.

If the OP had broken a contract then the place to deal with that is the small claims court, not the local FB group.

Even if I’d believed his side of the story, his conduct would mean I would never do business with him and wouldn’t consider him to be someone worth doing business with.

OP have you reported him to the moderators of whatever FB group he’s poste on? And has he had any comments?

It is quite disturbing the number of people who don't recognise racist microaggressions. I (a white person) actually did a short course on this a few years ago where we had to read various articles or pieces of writing and say if we felt any was problematic in terms of racism/ableism and why etc. I was actually quite embarrassed by the number of things I didn't spot when I thought I was quite 'on it' and I've really been a lot more aware since then. I'd really recommend something similar if you're involved with writing or disseminating written information in any kind of way. It really was a very valuable experience for me. The course leader said something about every time there is a microaggression in text, it's basically saying to the reader 'This is not for you'.

Absolutely, 100percent!

It's normal to refer to what was cooked in a pan when describing washing it up, because it makes a difference to how easy or not it is to clean.

Bogggle · 22/05/2023 18:11

How has everyone found who he is!? I’ve searched loads of things on Facebook and can’t find the posts anywhere

He removed his Facebook post after a backlash of comments, judging by the message he sent me here this am, he was probably hoping to achieve quite the opposite.

Also OP has said she wasn't even washing any pans, so I'll go as far to say it's not just racist but misogynistic with the 'scrubber' remark later.

Yep, I agree and I think OP said it’s all male staff so it’s not even as if he/his friend could have mistakenly thought they seen her scrubbing her anything.

@WiddlinDiddlin

If you require a deposit, why would begin the work without receiving it?

No work should begin before the customer has signed a contract and payed the deposit. It’s just a foolish business practice, particularly for an independent artist.

It shouldn't be and thats why I say he sounds like an arsehole - though I still take into account the OP is being somewhat reluctant to share all the details here...

Only a total muppet starts work without a deposit though. But it does sound as if the OP did know he had begun work, without a deposit (or how does the argument about how much it is come into play?)

TheGander · 22/05/2023 18:17

I guess you know your market OP but I’m old enough to think the whole trend for instagrammable fake trees is regrettable , mostly on environmental grounds. I’ve noticed an inverse correlation between the presence of fake trees and the quality of food . Not saying this is the case in your restaurant mind.
However he sounds like a nasty piece of work and I can understand why you got nervous about doing business with him. NB A while ago I was asked for 100% payment before a garage door was fitted. He did check out in companies house though. When I posted in mumsnet everyone came down on the side of the tradesman saying it wasn’t unusual, he had costs etc 🤷🏼‍♀️

Lwrenagain · 22/05/2023 18:19

I think it's racist and he sounds an absolute fucking bellend.

OP, he's an oxygen thief, fuck him and his fake tree.

I appreciate that he thought it was a done deal but more fool him for ordering something without anything in writing.

The shining shoes/scrubbing korma pans just makes him sound pathetic.

And I'm equally pissed off he's just a korma and boiled rice twat.
Boring korma knob.

Redebs · 22/05/2023 18:19

OMG12 · 22/05/2023 17:40

Well if she actually was scrubbing korma pans (perfectly possible) why is it racist?

The guy said he had a photo of her doing that, so
I have no idea why that is racism.

WiddlinDiddlin · 22/05/2023 18:19

Restaurantlover · 22/05/2023 18:12

I think it is - that doesn't mean he wasn't being racist - but yes, eg. scrubbing a soup pan might be easier than scrubbing a jam pan.

I write professionally, I might well include the detail of what was cooked in something when describing a person cleaning that item, that would definitely be normal, it adds more context.

But as I say... that doesn't mean he wasn't being racist.

JudgeRudy · 22/05/2023 18:20

SpeckledlyHen · 22/05/2023 15:31

From your OP it sounds like you agreed to buy the tree. And judging by the fact your husband told him you were good for the money and sending him a picture of the range rover it also implies you intended to pay for the tree. To me it looks like you ordered something, changed your mind and are now trying to back out of the transaction. But that's what I am reading from your OP and his FB message.

I don't think it's racist. He's angry because (presumably) he felt like your OK meant yes, go ahead. He feels you've backed out of a contract and left him with goods that he might struggle to sell. You quite rightly decided against doing business with someone who wasn't legitimately 'registered'. The issue is the disagreement about whether you had a contract.
The bit about the Range Rover candy scrubbing pans isn't racist. It's an attempt to discredit you. I'd be inclined to send a strongly worded solicitors letter instructing him to cease posting lies unless he would like to be sued for libel.
I'd also be inclined to report to Police as its possible this might be seen as harassment if its causing you fear distress or alarm.

It is racist because he was lying and the photo doesn’t exist. He is trying to project a certain stereotypical view of her. I really doubt if they ran a gastropub he would have said she was scrubbing gravy pans.

Indian + generic curry comment = racist

I'm genuinely perplexed how someone who has supposedly marched against racism all their life is on here arguing this isn't it

DemiColon · 22/05/2023 18:22

Didn't identify the business in his rant? If so, I don't really see how the reference to the pans could have been meant to imply anything more about the ethnicity of the owners.

He sounds very unprofessional, but it also seems to me like there was an agreement to purchase his services, it should have been made clear the OP did not intend to buy the tree once she'd decided that.

OneTC · 22/05/2023 18:23

A while ago I was asked for 100% payment before a garage door was fitted.

Did he ask you after starting the work?

CaptainNelson · 22/05/2023 18:23

The post is racist. Amazed that others can't see it.
The contract thing - well, I think he does have a point, but agree that he should have asked for the deposit before he ordered anything or did the work. I'm self employed and while I would work on a small commission without any kind of contract/agreement in writing, I wouldn't for something worth £4K as that's too big an amount to risk.
He may not be VAT registered because he's not required to be.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 22/05/2023 18:24

SchoolQuestionnaire · 22/05/2023 17:30

I’d be reluctant to fork out 4K deposit to an unknown ‘tradesman’ with no record on Companies House who isn’t even VAT registered. If he doesn’t want to incur a ‘business loss’ he should probably bother to actually establish a proper business.

Op he is a nasty racist who’s clearly bitter about your success and seems to think you owe him a living. You don’t need to reply to the post or defend yourself. He’s doing a great job in fucking up his own pretend business with his horrible attitude.

Wow so no sole trader or partnership can ever be a 'proper business' especially not if their turnover is below the VAT limit?

Not defending this guy at all but these posts are really unfair to the millions of legit and honest sole traders out there.
