To ask the milkman for replacement milk?

Paq · 22/05/2023 07:28

We get our milk delivered by a milkman. We get glass bottles with foil lids.

Last week seagulls discovered our milk and attacked the foil lids to get to it. We emailed the milkman and put out a big orange bucket to cover the bottles and stop the seagulls from getting at them.

This morning the bucket has been untouched and all three bottles have been opened by the seagulls.

AIBU to ask for replacement milk?

Did you tell the milkman what the bucket was for and request they use it? If not then no I don’t think you can, if you did and they just didn’t bother then yes I would.

DustyLee123 · 22/05/2023 07:30

Did you tell him to use the bucket ?
In the past I’ve seen lids used, like those on polish cans.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 22/05/2023 07:32

I would have put a label on the bucket. The email probably hasn't been passed from the office to the milkman. Off the back of the email they will probably replace them though when you email photos of what has happened.

BrimFullOfAsher · 22/05/2023 07:33

Did you email the milkman or whoever he delivers for?

Maybe put a note out saying please cover bottles with bucket

Okunevo · 22/05/2023 07:34

Was the email direct to him, with plenty of time to be read? I'd have put a note on the bucket myself. If it had been a less conspicuous bucket I'd have said he might have just forgotten but bright orange is hard to miss!

Paq · 22/05/2023 07:36

We emailed and left a note out.

It was a long, detailed email because DH is incapable of brevity.

😂 feel your pain there.

I'd ask for a refund and remind them again. You can buy milk bottle containers with lids which also keep the bottles cool. That May he a better way forward?

Turnthelightoff · 22/05/2023 07:44

Then yes ask for replacements, from what you’ve said they either need to replace this time and learn to use the bucket or you’ll be forced to cancel the milk deliveries for fear of them being spoiled. Does your milkman only do glass bottles? Ours also does plastic ones which can be recycled so is a different sized bottle in plastic a longer term option? Appreciate it might not be.

Tessisme · 22/05/2023 07:59

🤣🤣 at DH incapable of brevity. I have one of those. A three page essay to ask for a spare part for the vacuum cleaner type thing. You may need to send a shortened version of said email in case the milkman got bored before your DH got to the point! In all seriousness though, I do think you should ask for a refund in this case.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 22/05/2023 08:00

It used to always be blue tits that did this in the dim and distant past. I'm impressed that your gulls don't just knock the bottles over - they are such vandals. (sorry OP, no advice, just reminiscing)

Tessisme · 22/05/2023 08:01

... or replacement milk. Whichever is more practical.

The blue tits have excellent manners round here (and are extremely well fed from the zillion bird feeders we have). The bottles are in a bottle stand so it's hard to knock them over.

My two main take aways from this thread are OMG I’m not the only one with a DH who writes an essay when a sentence would do, and holy crap seagulls are smart!

Yes, I’d ask for replacement if they didn’t cover the milk.

Where have you found them? I've been looking for something to keep the bottles cool on the doorstep,

HAHAHAHA that might be the issue.

SirVixofVixHall · 22/05/2023 08:22

Blue Tits used to do it when milk had cream at the top, they like the high fat content. They don’t do it with homogenised milk.
We had them peck our milk when I was little, I think we had some sort of plastic cover things to stop them - vague memory surfacing !

Laiste · 22/05/2023 08:25

Where was the note? Was it really really clear?

Set it up again (bucket and note) and take a pic and send that when you ask for a replacement.

Paq · 22/05/2023 08:32

I'm less queasy about drinking milk that was interfered with by blue tits than by flying rats seagulls.

Empties were out with the bucket over them. Note was clear on top of the bottles and under the bucket.

To add insult to injury, the seagulls also shat in the bucket.

It’s probably a new milkman who didn’t know the drill. I’d try getting a proper milk bottle holder with a lid. He (or she) is more likely to recognise and use that. Bonus is that ours is insulated, which is good in summer.

ClaudetteAndHerBaguette · 22/05/2023 08:40

I think it's clear what's happened here. The seagulls moved your note so that the milkman didn't know what the bucket was for and they could enjoy the spoils of their dastardly scheme. Then they shat in your bucket just to show you who's boss.

Sorry, I do know it's not funny, but thank you for giving me my first smile of the day!

I was right - bloody vandals 🤣
