We've just gone on holiday and DH is having a -shit I can't remember turning the oven off moment....

No one has a spare key to the house and we don't live near family.

I'm pretty sure it was off but I was getting kids dressed and ready when he was making lunch.

Not sure what to do now and obviously it's worrying!

It's an old hotpoint oven.

Could we get someone to go and turn the gas off? The gas box is outside. Arghhhh.

Any one been in this situation? What do we do?!

Oven was off
Backdoor wasnt locked
Place got burgled

You're a cruel person!

I'm also going with the oven being off.

I once spent a whole holiday with the nagging worry we had left the fridge/freezer plugged in (I had gone to the trouble of defrosting it so it could be unplugged and save energy/reduce fire hazard) - we hadn't. After that I started using a checklist.

So the update.....

We're home and the oven.....WAS OFF!

In future we will definitely be using some of the tricks mentioned here - taking photos and running through a checklist.

Thanks to everyone for all the support!

Thank you for updating. Am glad the oven was off! Hope you managed to enjoy the rest of your holiday.

Thank you for the update! I'm so glad that everything worked out well. Now remember to turn the gas back on before you need it! x

Of course it wasn't on. What an absolute fuss about nothing.

Lots of quick ways into houses. Sliding patio doors, louvres.. 😳

My DGM had double glazing installed, must be 40 odd years ago now, including sliding patio doors. The people who installed them said how unsafe they were security-wise and drilled holes in certain places so little metal rods could be inserted to keep the doors closed, otherwise apparently, even when locked you can force them easily from the outside.

On worrying about leaving things on, we went to a funeral not so long ago, 20 minutes after we left - and we left a little late - I had a complete panic that I'd left the grill on. It's usually whether I've locked the door, but I remembered locking the door, so grill. And there was a reason - our toaster had broken so I'd made toast under the grill, which wasn't part of the normal routine, so maybe I'd left it on......

We didn't go back, I managed to persuade myself we couldn't have left it on because the fan would have kicked in and I didn't remember hearing it. When we got home, many, many hours later (nightmare of a diversion on the way back, with unclear signs that meant we went round it twice), the grill was off.

If I was you I think I’d be more annoyed at him now that you no it’s off 😂 all that fuss and it wasn’t even on. Better safe that sorry though and atleast you don’t have a sky high bill!

All's well that ends well.

Glad the oven was off.

I remember rushing home once because I thought I'd left the iron on. Fortunately I was only 10 mins drive away. And fortunately I hadn't left it on.

Asosbabe · 31/05/2023 20:59
