We've just gone on holiday and DH is having a -shit I can't remember turning the oven off moment....

No one has a spare key to the house and we don't live near family.

I'm pretty sure it was off but I was getting kids dressed and ready when he was making lunch.

Not sure what to do now and obviously it's worrying!

It's an old hotpoint oven.

Could we get someone to go and turn the gas off? The gas box is outside. Arghhhh.

Any one been in this situation? What do we do?!

I think there's only one (k)nob in this story...

cartoontrickster · 22/05/2023 19:04

Following to see if the oven was on🤔

Carlosi456 · 22/05/2023 19:13

If he can't remember turning it off he probably has! Not a conscious memory, but an automatic action unrecalled. However, I'd be onto the fire-brigade tbh, they may charge you, or break the door down, or break in someway, or turn the gas off from the meter outside?

It was started days ago, read the updates.

Lol this reminds me of when I was a kid and we went away to Devon, our neighbour rang to say the cat she was looking after for us was looking at her through the window of our locked house 😂

Was a long 8 hour round trip back for my Dad…

Babyface01 · 22/05/2023 18:20

Coukd you call your gas supplier and get then to cut the gas off on there end?

Is there any point in that given that the gas going in to the house was shut off days ago, do you think?

Densol57 · 22/05/2023 19:32

Invested now to see whether he did or didnt turn it off when you get home.

I have complex security systems and I make sure everyone is out of the house as I follow with my switching off, checking doors, windows, stuff turned off and alarms turned on etc so I dont get distracted.

lieselotte · 22/05/2023 19:33

DH and I did this about 20 years ago. We went away for a week and didn't realise until we walked in and the flat was really warm (not on fire!)

The plants in the kitchen had grown well.

It was an electric standalone cooker.

These days I always triple check ;)

Interested to know if the oven actually was left on when you get back.

sassyclassyandsmartassy · 22/05/2023 19:35

Call a gas engineer/plumber and pay them to attend to turn gas off at the meter outside 🙂

'NATIONAL GAS SERVICE' are you being serious?! British Gas was privatised back in the 1970's by Maggie Thatcher's Conservative government!!! I presume you do know the name of your PRIVATE electricity and gas supplier?! FFS!!

I think they mean the National Grid emergency service, formerly Transco. They usually come out for suspected gas leaks. But yes back in the day it was all under British Gas, before privatisation.

WaltzingWaters · 22/05/2023 19:40

Glad it’s sorted! Looking forward to the update 😂

Mañanarama · 22/05/2023 19:43

I know this got sorted but can I just suggest that people always leave a key with someone nearby when going away. At the very least hide a key in your garden (even if you have to bury it!) in case someone needs access in an emergency. Or get a key safe box thingy with a passcode.

Yerroblemom1923 · 22/05/2023 19:44

I see the issue has been resolved now but just out of interest do you think you'd be able to phone a friend/ neighbour to contact a locksmith to get a key cut for them to enter your house? Would this even be possible? We don't have gas, just leccy so no idea what we'd do in this situ.

bossybloss · 22/05/2023 19:59

I know it’s all sorted .. but do you know what I would have done… posted my house keys from France to a neighbour so that they could let themselves in to check .. long winded I suppose.

AdoraBell · 22/05/2023 20:18

Glad the gas engineer turned the gas off. Hope you can relax now and enjoy your holiday.

Ineke · 22/05/2023 20:22

Talking about the checks you do on leaving a house for a period of time. I wasn’t aware that you should turn off the water as well. Or at the very least turn off the water supply to your washing machine and dishwasher. The hose to my washing machine developed a split and water poured out for over ten days. My neighbour phoned me when it started coming out the front door. Luckily they called the water people who turned off the water supply to the house. It was not a welcome home coming!

This happened to my mum who was meant to be looking after a neighbour's cat whilst they went away for the weekend. It was long before mobile phones and she didn't have contact details so she spent the weekend tipping spoonfuls of catfood through the letter box onto the doormat.

Ineke · 22/05/2023 20:27

PS. I leave several keys with various friends and neighbours, just in case. A previous poster said they take photos of all appliances turned off. That may help but you still get the odd mishap such as hair straighteners left on! Practice makes perfect, work out a checking out routine so that you can leave and not worry about things.

That's so sweet

Resilience · 22/05/2023 20:39

Glad it's all sorted now.

For those who suggested breaking in to check, just bear in mind that if it's gas and the flam had gone out, that would cause a huge explosion. Far better to turn off the gas and wait a day or so.

When I was at uni me and my ex went to Holland for 4 days. He left the grill on low. Flat was hotter than the sun but fine. Ex is now a self made multi millionaire many times over but I know how sketchy he can be 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

It's all sorted. A gas engineer turned the gas off from outside.

I will let you know when we're back whether DH actually did leave the oven on by if the nob is turned.

In which case he is the knob 😂
