We've just gone on holiday and DH is having a -shit I can't remember turning the oven off moment....

No one has a spare key to the house and we don't live near family.

I'm pretty sure it was off but I was getting kids dressed and ready when he was making lunch.

Not sure what to do now and obviously it's worrying!

It's an old hotpoint oven.

Could we get someone to go and turn the gas off? The gas box is outside. Arghhhh.

Any one been in this situation? What do we do?!

Lots of quick ways into houses. Sliding patio doors, louvres.. 😳

Ovenon1 · 20/05/2023 22:27

It's a gas oven.

We don't have any of the neighbours numbers. We've not lived in our house long. Even if we did though, no one has a key to let themselves in to check.

Well then, you need to go back, no by other option unless you want to replace the kitchen or a risk a house fire.

Apologies, just seen you had it sorted! Sorry 🙊

CoronationKicking · 21/05/2023 09:44

"How? Literally can't think of a single way of breaking into a house without doing this"

Take the glass out of a patio door or the lower panel from a front door. We've had to break in more than once 🙄

AllIeveknewonlyou · 21/05/2023 09:48

Ovenon1 · 21/05/2023 08:12

It's all sorted. A gas engineer turned the gas off from outside.

I will let you know when we're back whether DH actually did leave the oven on by if the nob is turned.

Hurrah! Now you can relax.

crazycatladyof6 · 21/05/2023 09:55

Glad it’s sorted. Enjoy your hols

WimbyAce · 21/05/2023 09:58

Phew glad it's sorted! I have thoughts like this all the time. Happened to a friend where her child turned the hob on and caused a fire. I check mine all the time now!

FlamingoQueen · 21/05/2023 10:01

Hope you can enjoy the rest of your holiday.

Jellifulfruit · 21/05/2023 10:33

Phew! glad you managed to sort it

"Should have checked it before you left" 🤣🤣🤣

Oh yes - I find the wise after the event 'I'd never do anything so foolish' posts are even more irritating.

Hope you can enjoy the holiday now, OP.

Showersugar · 21/05/2023 10:50

Shamelessly place marking for the update. Have a great holiday OP!

Polis · 21/05/2023 10:51

Then they popped the window back in for me and sealed it back up. I was absolutely amazed how easy it was and slightly freaked out

As are we now that you have told all the potential burglars on MN an easy way to break into our houses.

They already know, don't worry. The person I knew who had convictions for such was helped to find a job by his Probation Officer. In a window manufacturing firm.

hopefulsquirrel · 21/05/2023 10:56

For the future, get a key box with a spare key so you can give someone the code to get it if ever you need to.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 21/05/2023 10:57

Well done OP. Glad its sorted. These things happen in family life and it means that everyone will be aware and not do the same thing next time or have a solution up their sleeve.
I have had some of the same issues over the years.
A poster up thread suggested taking a photo/video on your phone before you go, which is as another poster said genius.
I got so fed up of the pre-holiday mayhem. I left a checklist on the fridge which I had to tick. It really worked and I made the youngest check it too 😀
Of course I have to remember to put it up in the first place! I think I had a FlyLady countdown to holidays - which was quite a good checklist.

You could also get a security key box, if there's a hidden place from the road place to put it. In case like us, you lose your house keys on holdiay.
Hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday.

Call the fire brigade and explain. they will turn the gas off for you. I haven't read the thread and am sure that someone else must have already suggested this. So sorry for repeating if this is the case. Good luck.

Great Minds think alike, cross posts from me 😀

Good idea for all of us! I have given out spare keys to close family who live nearby, but you never know if they'll be around, do you? In fact, I often go away with my close family.

Dalekjastninerels · 21/05/2023 11:03

This would be my worst nightmare!

I double (more like multiple) check everything before I leave the house!

Calling the fire brigade is a good idea; better safe than sorry.

Enjoy your holiday :)

Dwightlovesmichael · 21/05/2023 08:14

Thats great! So glad you got it sorted out.

This is totally the sort of thing I would do. The amount of times i’ve turned back ten mins into a journey as I’ve had to go and check I’ve switched things off is embarrassing.

I turn back every day because I think I've forgotten SOMETHING. Hahaha. It's usually a false alarm, with me thinking I've left something on when I haven't, but it's worth the trouble of going back because there might come a time when I actually have forgotten to switch off the important things.

CabbagePatchDole · 21/05/2023 11:05

So glad it's now sorted. You can all relax and enjoy your holiday. If it was a false alarm it sounds as though your dh really needs that holiday (I often panic that I've left the oven on or whatever when I'm stressed). Have a lovely holiday.

How did you find a gas engineer overnight? Not troll hunting just impressed!

Our local Facebook page has lots of recommendations for tradesmen, gas safe, electricians, builders etc. Very easy and quick to find someone.

AllIeveknewonlyou · 21/05/2023 11:11

NeverDropYourMooncup · 21/05/2023 10:54

They're putting his skills to good use...!

Someone upthread mentioned hair straighteners, this is why I stopped using them.

At the time I was always dashing around getting to work/friends/study and I'd get a few minutes out the house then doubt and uncertainty would suddenly strike and I'd turn back. It wasn't worth it for having sleeker hair.

Nanaof1 · 21/05/2023 11:16

Redglitter · 21/05/2023 07:59

Exactly! And suggesting getting local police to do a check is ridiculed as if preventing a fire and gas explosion aren't worth bothering them with

The Police will not get involved. They're not going to break a door in to check if a cooker is still on. That's never going to happen Fire Service probably would but at the cost of the front door

There was nothing to break into since the gas shut-off valve in outside. I cannot even imagine how unsafe and inside gas shut-off valve would be.
So yes, the police would come and turn it off, though the fire department is more able to do so since they turn them off more often, know where they are and what to do.

The majority of posters were intelligent enough to figure out the gas shut-off valve as being the smart choice and not "breaking into the house". LOL!
