We've just gone on holiday and DH is having a -shit I can't remember turning the oven off moment....

No one has a spare key to the house and we don't live near family.

I'm pretty sure it was off but I was getting kids dressed and ready when he was making lunch.

Not sure what to do now and obviously it's worrying!

It's an old hotpoint oven.

Could we get someone to go and turn the gas off? The gas box is outside. Arghhhh.

Any one been in this situation? What do we do?!

Probably been asked already but do you have a smart meter to see your gas usage ?... it would be zero if you are away at this time of year unless the oven is on.
Meanwhile at least it's sorted by turning off the gas supply.

Great idea!

Bit late but for future ref I always take photos of appliances turned off before I go on holiday for peace of mind.

Such a great idea! I always freak out about this sort of stuff!

ScreamingBeans · 22/05/2023 21:51

Posting to find out if the oven had been left on.

Beccaboo822 · 22/05/2023 22:17

I always have that feeling I have left something on, not locked something etc but every time I've ever gone back it's always OK. Like someone said I think u have probably automatically done it. Its so difficult though as you probably won't relax unless you can fine out.

National gas emergency service - 0800 111 999

Take some deep breaths.

Brilliant 😂😂😂😂

When does the OP person returns home for the big update?

Call a gas engineer/plumber and pay them to attend to turn gas off at the meter outside 🙂

What a great idea.

So good, that OP did it DAYS AGO.

ffs.

I know it’s all sorted .. but do you know what I would have done… posted my house keys from France to a neighbour so that they could let themselves in to check .. long winded I suppose.

Don’t know what your regional service is like. It I can pretty much guarantee I’d be home long before anything sent that’s handled by Royal Mail when it gets in the country 😂
(or UPS for that matter)

So do I.

I have to leave extra time to leave the house so I can double more than that
check everything. It's fix everything so it is perfect first, then check with my eyes only (without touching) If I touch something at the eye checking stage I have to start the eye checking stage again.

I know I will be like this so I leave extra time for it.

I once went away on holiday for a week and left the front door wide open!! Blush Our neighbour closed the door but had no key - but they contacted a friend of a friend and a family member went to lock up for us.

Manth0914 · 23/05/2023 07:10

Glad you got it sorted! Enjoy your holiday.

So grateful to the PP who suggested taking pictures of appliances before going on holiday - one of the best hacks I've ever heard!

GingerNutMe · 23/05/2023 12:46

The first thing to do in these situations is to make sure that the house and contents insurance is up to date !!!!

MucozadeOnLucozade · 23/05/2023 17:00

Desperate to know the outcome of "gasgate".

ThatFraggle · 23/05/2023 17:29

Let's start a sweepstakes.

A = The oven was on.
B = The oven was off
C = The oven was off, but there was something else, like an iron left on, or windows open.

WhotheHellisEdgar · 23/05/2023 18:10

I'm going with B, the oven was off.
It's the type of thing I do automatically and never remember doing.

LadyDaffodil · 23/05/2023 18:30

B from me, bet he's done it automatically without creating the memory. Once the thought gets in your head tho, you can't shake it off

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 23/05/2023 19:34

I actually went around my house videoing on my phone that I had turned everything off before my first holiday with my baby because I knew that I would have one of those "oh shit!" Moments as soon as I got there and i couldnt trust my own memory😂

Eeeeny · 23/05/2023 19:42

Stuff of nightmares

Winningatseesaw · 24/05/2023 23:42

B - definitely off. I think it was just done automatically.

EnthENd · 25/05/2023 00:49

Shameless place marking.

SparklyBlackKitten · 25/05/2023 04:31
