We've just gone on holiday and DH is having a -shit I can't remember turning the oven off moment....

No one has a spare key to the house and we don't live near family.

I'm pretty sure it was off but I was getting kids dressed and ready when he was making lunch.

Not sure what to do now and obviously it's worrying!

It's an old hotpoint oven.

Could we get someone to go and turn the gas off? The gas box is outside. Arghhhh.

Any one been in this situation? What do we do?!

Is it a uk holiday? How far away are you?

nonamey · 20/05/2023 22:19

as above, UK or not? I think it’s tough if you can’t get back, if your house had set on fire you’d have heard about it by neighbours I’m sure. he will have turned it off

Allmarbleslost · 20/05/2023 22:19

Can you contact a neighbour?

If electric maybe contact your supplier and ask if they can turn off the supply. I know you would lose your fridge / freezer stuff but that's better than potential oven fire

Nightmanagerfan · 20/05/2023 22:24

Our old neighbours went away for a week once and left the oven on: they only realised when they got home, by which time all the tiles had come off the wall in the kitchen and the laminate fronts of the kitchen cupboards had melted. The whole kitchen had to be replaced and they were lucky the damage wasn't more extensive.

No but the gas can be turned off from outside... but

Mommasgotabrandnewbag · 20/05/2023 22:27

Get someone to go and turn the gas off at the meter.

Ovenon1 · 20/05/2023 22:27

It's a gas oven.

We don't have any of the neighbours numbers. We've not lived in our house long. Even if we did though, no one has a key to let themselves in to check.

How long would it take you to get home?

alqoam · 20/05/2023 22:28

Do you have smart meters tracking on an app? From mine it would be easy to see if we had left something on.

Ovenon1 · 20/05/2023 22:28

Mommasgotabrandnewbag · 20/05/2023 22:27

Yeah this is what I was thinking. Would the national gas service do that? Or we do need to find a 24hr gas engineer?

Or can literally anyone turn a gas meter off?

I'm so clueless - sorry!

Any friends who are handy at DIY / builder stuff that you would trust to break in with minimal damage?

Or that would meet a locksmith?

Youngatheart00 · 20/05/2023 22:29

Depending on where you are (UK or overseas) I’d be going back to check unfortunately

The other option is to call an emergency locksmith although not sure how you’d verify you live there (and wasn’t just instructing them to break in!)

good luck getting it sorted - what a stress

TeeBee · 20/05/2023 22:30

Can you see the oven from a window? Pay someone from a cab company to drive to your house and look through the window to check.

musicforthesoul · 20/05/2023 22:30

If you're still in the UK I'd suck up one of you going back to check, staying home overnight then driving back tomorrow.

Otherwise neighbour/friend/family nearby to check. If no one has a key (or any breaking and entering skills!) might need a locksmith to gain entry.

WomanAtTheBack · 20/05/2023 22:34

How far away do your family or friends live? Would one of them be prepared to drive there and have a look through the kitchen window to see it it’s on?

If it is, getting in via breaking a window might be cheaper (replacing glass and cost of relatives petrol) than paying insurance excess, replacing a burnt out oven or worse?

Floralnomad · 20/05/2023 22:34

I’d be asking a family member to break in or going home . It’s really not worth the risk

NotTooOldPaul · 20/05/2023 22:35

I think the fire brigade would go and turn off your gas if you phoned your local fire station and said it is a fire risk

NotmykingEatCake · 20/05/2023 22:35

He turned it off. He just didn't make a memory of turning it off.

NotmykingEatCake · 20/05/2023 22:36

Unless he often leaves oven on?

Niceseasidetown · 20/05/2023 22:37

Honestly what would you want a neighbour to do in this situation? You're risking people's lives. If you think the oven may be on you need to go home.

Ovenon1 · 20/05/2023 22:37

We're in France.
