WWYD - on hol - left oven on?!

We've just gone on holiday and DH is having a -shit I can't remember turning the oven off moment....

No one has a spare key to the house and we don't live near family.

I'm pretty sure it was off but I was getting kids dressed and ready when he was making lunch.

Not sure what to do now and obviously it's worrying!

It's an old hotpoint oven.

Could we get someone to go and turn the gas off? The gas box is outside. Arghhhh.

Any one been in this situation? What do we do?!

What time of day did you leave? If literally straight after tea time and you made oven baked stuff, prob try to do something. If you left at 7am after eating cereal, it's highly unlikely the oven is on.

HeddaGarbled · 20/05/2023 22:57

He’ll have turned it off. You just do it automatically, don’t you? He’s just being a worry wart. Selfish and thoughtless of him to stress you out like this on your holiday.

Give over, it's neither selfish not thoughtless to have intrusive thoughts and "shit, did we lock the door / turn the oven off / unplug the hair straighteners" moments.

Redebs · 20/05/2023 23:10

I would call the local police

nutmegnook · 20/05/2023 23:12

I think you need peace of mind or you won't enjoy holiday. Is there a way you can go back ?

HelpMebeok · 20/05/2023 23:13

Could someone see through the kitchen window whether it was turned on?

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 20/05/2023 23:13

RiverRock22 · 20/05/2023 22:40

Bit late but for future ref I always take photos of appliances turned off before I go on holiday for peace of mind.

This is genius

Locksmith. Change the locks, go in and check oven, leave new keys with neighbours.

This is the best advice

MucozadeOnLucozade · 20/05/2023 23:15

Following

I'd phone your gas company, can they tell?

Boomboom22 · 20/05/2023 23:15

Have you joined next door? In my area this would be a school WhatsApp group message. Please help! Can someone look in my window/ turn off the gas outside. I'm sure if you go local enough you can find a close neighbour / the local busybody

Boomboom22 · 20/05/2023 23:17

Good idea, if you have a live smart metre can you log in to the app? If you've recently moved should be easy to do, and see usage? If it's an up to date smart metre.
Not like mine that hasn't sent readings for a year!

ashitghost · 20/05/2023 23:17

We went to France for a week one and when we got back we realised my then DH had left one of the gas rings on. You’re not the first or last to do something like this. Hope you get things sorted.

Yfory · 20/05/2023 23:17

Whereabouts do you live in the UK roughly? Maybe someone on here could help you out somehow. I would if you were near me.

LumpyandBumps · 20/05/2023 23:18

Just a thought if the meter is outside and the oven is on it will be recording usage. I assume the oven takes quite a lot. If it isn’t moving then presumably it is not on and the supply doesn’t need to be turned off.

I was just about to say the same thing!

Strawberrydelight78 · 20/05/2023 23:20

Which utility company are you with? Could you log in to your account online and check your gas usage? I'm with bulb and can check on the app our daily usage. If it's been on constant there will be no dips in the usage bar chart.

greenspaces4peace · 20/05/2023 23:23

i'd phone the fire hall, they're big into preventative and community teaching.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 20/05/2023 23:27

Get someone to turn off the gas from the meter (assuming it’s outside). You must know someone who can go to your house?

and when you get back get a key safe and get to know the neighbours. Only on MN do people never seem to have anyone else they can ever call upon to help in a crisis

Kitcaterpillar · 20/05/2023 23:28

I'm surprised more people aren't suggesting the oven isn't on.

My husband is a permanent 'did I leave the oven on?' person. He's never left the oven on because... who leaves the oven on?

Channellingsophistication · 20/05/2023 23:32

I’d get a locksmith to change locks and check oven. i wouldnt however ask for help via facebook groups to alert people you are away from home….

its the times you dont think about it being on that its on, so I suspect all will be fine.

my DP left gas burner on for our weeks holiday once….

sequin2000 · 20/05/2023 23:32

It will do no harm to ask a friend to turn the gas off just in case and for your peace of mind but it is likely to be off.

I’ve heard it all now.

BrutusMcDogface · 20/05/2023 23:36

“Who leaves the oven on?”

My dp, frequently. 🙄 He’s not stupid, just forgetful, but also as it’s a fan oven it sounds like it’s on for a while after you switch it off so it’s not always obvious it’s been left on.

I would contact the fire brigade and ask them to turn off the gas from outside, if you really and truly haven’t got anyone else you can trust to do so. Hope all is ok!

WhatAmIDoingWrong123 · 20/05/2023 23:37

I think he’s probably turned it off OP, but as someone with terrific anxiety over these things, I go and check my door every time I’ve already got halfway down the street. I also check the oven is off all the time. We don’t usually store a memory of quick, every day tasks like this but it would be so much more useful if we did! FWIW, I’ve never discovered that I’ve ever not locked the door or turned the oven off and I do ALOT of spot checks 😆

I hope you get some peace of mind over it.
