Could you kill someone?

I was at a social event where a we were talking about gun crime in America. One woman said she had lived in America and was talking to an American women who had a gun which she said was for self defence. The woman at the social do said she said to her, ' But could you really kill someone with it?' To which the American woman apparently went silent, and the British woman at the social do declared, ' It was like she have never really thought about that!'.

The clear implication of the British woman's argument was that, of course no right minded person could shoot anyone, so there is not point in having a gun.

But I thought, ' I could kill someone. If someone was coming to kill me, and they were fair minded enough to give me time to reach into my bag and retrieve my gun, I would shoot them. And if they were coming for my child I would definitely shoot them. |I might be traumatised afterwards, but I would shoot them.'

I'd always assumed everyone was like me. But the British woman obviously assumes everyone is like her.

So, in genuine curiosity as to find out whether I am an outlying psycho, I thought I would put it to the vote.

YABU - I could never kill anyone
YANBU - I could kill someone.

I would like to think I could Kill someone if my life or that of someone i love was in danger

and I’m fairly certain my husband could do it without blinking an eye and not feeling guilty one bit .

Could I do it with a knife - possibly probably and hopefully yes In a kill or be killed situation but would prefer to use a gun 😂

Could I do it with a gun yes much more likely and easy to say yes I could kill someone .
I have shot real guns on a gun range on holiday in Vegas and Thailand many times and I absolutely loved doing it and if guns were legal in the uk DH & I would probably have several guns each 😂😂

I have a ex neighbor who has a lifetime restraining order not to enter my street or come within 100 meters of myself and my other half - you rarely get this unless the level of violence and harassment is of a high level . He tried to stab me and others with a butchers knife and in the words of the judge “but for the grace of god I wasn’t stabbed that day “

could I kill him - 100 percent yes . I can’t explain how much I hate this person but only if I thought i could get away with it 😂but I would probably be the first person the police would want to speak to . But I am pretty sure I wouldn’t feel an ounce of guilt or remorse if I was able to get rid of him .

hattie43 · 19/05/2023 18:44

To protect my family and pets under threat of life then yes .

AnneElliott · 19/05/2023 18:46

Yep absolutely. In fact I drove at speed at a man who was attempting to car jack me knowing that if he didn't jump out of the way I'd probably kill him. But DS was in the car and I wasn't willing to risk that they'd drive off with him if I ended up stopping.

Anything which threatens our children I reckon most mothers could and would kill someone else.

Does this mean you're also a criminal, or in a professional capacity?

Im99912 · 19/05/2023 18:51

What I mean is I wouldn’t want to go to prison for killing my ex neighbour
but if I thought I could 100 percent get away with it then I would be plotting how to do it now

luckily the RO has kept me safe from him and I don’t have to watch “how to get away with murder “ 😂

WonderingWanda · 19/05/2023 18:51

If it was a them or me situation or a threat to my children then undoubtedly yes I am sure I could. Given how easily triggered I am by bad drivers or incompetent colleagues. In an actual real threat situation I'm sure I would lose it.

tatteddear · 19/05/2023 18:53

I could. Either in self defence or to right a wrong.

You can have a shotgun with a license purely for shooting ranges and you can have air rifles etc for use at home or on ranges with no license. As well as crossbows, pistols etc.

BatsHaveButtcheeks · 19/05/2023 19:27

Absolutely I could.
Like a PP at the beginning of the thread, I have a list. I'd also have zero remorse about taking out animal abusers.
I've often thought about how I'd kill certain people, and if I could get away with it, I'd definitely do it.

FabFitFifties · 19/05/2023 19:36

I'd be more likely to shoot than be able to stab someone.

GenderCriticalTrumpets · 19/05/2023 20:06

I could kill if someone was trying to kill my family. Or my dog. And there's a certain person from my past who I would happily poison if I could get away with it.

LizzieW1969 · 19/05/2023 21:38

I really don’t know. I’ve felt like I would have liked to kill the men who sexually abused my DSis and me as little girls, including my abusive F. But since they’re all already dead, it’s all hypothetical and the most I’ve done is kick the bath panels in a rage when alone in the house. (Very embarrassing when explaining why they were broken!)

I believe I could be capable of killing in self-defence or in defence of my DDs (now 14 and 11), but who can possibly know how they would respond in such extremity? I hope I never have to find out.

LizzieW1969 · 19/05/2023 21:56

I do want to add that the bath incident happened about 8 years ago, when I was suffering horribly from my PTSD. It was a one-off display of anger and has never been repeated.

Zanatdy · 19/05/2023 21:58

Self defence yes I reckon I could

Ardiaei · 19/05/2023 22:03

This thread is grim in places.

lookingforMolly · 19/05/2023 22:06

My Grandad suffered badly with ptsd from killing enemy soldiers in kill or be killed close combat situations in Ww2.

I would like to think I would find it hard to kill another person even in self defence.

Me too. Animal abusers and child abusers. No mercy.

Thelnebriati · 19/05/2023 22:13

I already know I can't kill anything bigger than a rabbit or pigeon.
I'm pretty sure I could shoot a mugger in the leg. Knowing my luck that would accidentally kill them.

CabbagePatchDole · 20/05/2023 00:02

Fiddlerdragon · 19/05/2023 14:52

I have a fairly extensive list of people I could genuinely kill if I could get away with it. If I ever got diagnosed with a terminal illness or something there was one person I had planned to kill right before I went (so prison wouldn’t have made a difference). He ended up dying a horrible death anyway. I’ve read the book ‘confessions of an executioner’ and thought I could do that job.

You should be locked up.

please don’t add me to your list.

For the benefit of the tabloid press
of course I would kill anyone on strike

but only after the entire tabloid press had been disposed of

Densol57 · 20/05/2023 00:39

I lived in Arizona for a while. I had my own gun a Glock 42. No safety, fully loaded sitting on top of the fridge. I hated it and left for many reasons one being the gun culture. I couldnt have shot someone

paulhollywoodshairgel · 20/05/2023 00:41

If my kids were in danger or somebody had hurt or abused them I absolutely could kill someone. Or if I was in mortal danger and it was the only way of getting out of it.

medianewbie · 20/05/2023 00:43

givemushypeasachance · 19/05/2023 15:06

There's different levels of killing. Firing a gun just involves holding a small metal object in approximately the right direction and tightening your finger slightly. Driving into someone with your car, you can pretty much just turn a wheel and close your eyes. Putting poison in someone's food or drink - takes planning but it's 'hands off'. But stabbing someone you have to be close and mean it, you'll get their blood on you. Or what about strangling, or holding a pillow over someone's face for a couple of minutes as they struggle and try to push you off? Would you do one or some but not all?

Good point.

I could kill someone if my children were in danger - yes.
I would happily shoot Putin, would have shot Hitler etc (probs by any means)
I did once, when younger, feel angry enough to genuinely want to kill someone who had done me great & deliberate harm for a very long time. I almost got the CPS to take my case forward but they declined at the last minute. I wanted to kill him so he couldn't do to other children what he had done to me (& he was regularly visiting Thailand on 'holiday' at that time). Perhaps fortunately I then had my children & decided that my important job was to protect them. If the courts wont bring him to justice then hopefully he will die a horrible death.
So, I passed it over to God. I'm glad now.

WomanAtTheBack · 20/05/2023 00:46

I can’t kill spiders and feel terrible when I stand on a snail on the path (that crunch!) and I couldn’t keep a gun as I’d worry I’d shoot someone accidentally or one of the Dc would get it.

I’d probably be killed if it was a me or them situation but if my DC or DH were in harms way with a person or animal attacking them, I have no doubt I’d do whatever it took to stop them, preferably in a clean way rather than bloody!

There are a few people I’d like well deserved bad things to happen to but not at my hands.
