To hate summer because...

Of the constant peer pressure to be outside in the sun, the pressure to get a bikini body and to lose weight in order to wear certain clothes, the pressure to be constantly doing outdoors activities and living life to the full.

I want to sit indoors with my cats, watch television and eat my favourite food. I don't want to go and sit in the sun. I don't want to wear a bikini and prance around pretending I love my body.

I'm a teacher and I've just finished a hard day of work but I feel that it's socially unacceptable to go and chill indoors for the rest of the evening as it's so 'beautiful' outside, and I live in a coastal town so the pressure to get out and onto the beach and into the sea is hard. I also suffer from depression which doesn't help.

Give me rain any day!

Anyone else or am I a grumpy nob?

Yabu; you’re the only one putting this pressure on yourself

Neverinamonthofsundays · 18/05/2023 18:01

I am also in a coastal town and would be bikini body ready if A) anyone else where I lived wore them which they do not and B) I was not risking getting chilblains doing so. Where are you that its hot?

lollipoprainbow · 18/05/2023 18:05

I'm with you !!

Daffodilmorning · 18/05/2023 18:08

I was about to say who on earth is wondering around in a bikini, but I guess if you live at the coast it’s more common.

Honestly, life’s too short. Wear what makes you happy and do what makes you happy. If sitting inside with your cats is how you want to spend your down time, it’s no one’s business but yours-enjoy!

Paperlate · 18/05/2023 18:10

My cat loves the summer. He spends loads of time in the garden. He'd be a bit pissed off about having to spend all of the summer indoors.

Truestorypeeps · 18/05/2023 18:17

I feel the same in terms of when it's light outside until 10/10.30pm and I'm indoors and think, I should really go out in the fresh air for a walk or something, shouldn't I? Just can't be arsed. At the end of summer though I regret it and promise myself that next year will different! Never is!

JaneyGee · 18/05/2023 18:43

I love the sunshine, the light evenings, etc, but man do I hate the heat. I dread a repeat of last summer. If I had to choose between a rainy/grey summer and a boiling hot one, I'd choose rain.

ForgottenPalace · 01/05/2024 18:03

I hate summer, too. I know what you mean about getting pressured into doing all the "great summer activities". Most don't get what you mean, but I do. In the evenings I always feel as if I'm wasting my life away because I'm not outside. Or out drinking. Ew. It's just all so gross. I'll be at home, too.

SpikeGilesSandwich · 01/05/2024 19:12

Yep, I hate summer too. Today was quite warm enough thanks, I felt quite hot in my jeans, t shirt and trainers, might get sandals out tomorrow but no hotter please!

LadyAroundTown · 01/05/2024 19:34

Come to West Yorkshire then. It’s not summer here. We’ve barely had a few dry days yet.

BlastedPimples · 01/05/2024 19:37

It's just too hot. I look like a sweaty mess all the time. Hot faced and shiny.

nadine90 · 01/05/2024 19:42

I’m not a summer person either. I like layers, blankets, cosy fires and soft lighting. Not sweating, hay fever, wasps and having to get my pasty legs out!

HeddaGarbled · 01/05/2024 19:45

You need different friends or to get off social media.

StormingNorman · 01/05/2024 19:50

I’m a grumpy knob too. I always feel I should be drinking rose in pub garden or floating around a tennis court but all I really want to do is collapse on the sofa. I do like sailing weekends and ice cream though so maybe I’m coming round to the warmer weather a bit.

Whydoikeeprejoining · 01/05/2024 19:54

Summer is great for not having to wear a big coat. I have a fair few cats that aren't mine, which sunbathe in my garden, which I love to watch. They lie in some bizarre positions and look so happy.
Everything looks nicer when it's sunny.
BUT It's not great for showing up imperfections like facial hair. When you're due a wax and the sun is glaring and you can't walk round with a big scarf over your face.
The pressure to take kids on holiday because all their friends are going.
Trying to eat outside with wasps.
Sticky suncream and the morning line up to plaster it onto the kids before school.

utilitarianism · 01/05/2024 19:55

I hate what I feel is excessive heat, so summer isn't my time of year, either. But I'd put an end to feeling pressure to get out and do things you don't want to do. Tell people plainly that you're hot, you're tired, you just want to chill inside, etc, then just do what you like. If you'd like to spend time with them, invite them to do something you'd prefer, instead.

It's never a waste to live your life the way you want to live it. We don't all like the same things, but that's okay!

Nannyogg134 · 01/05/2024 19:57

I totally get it, I don't really like the hot bit of summer tbh and there's always a bit of shock when I say it to my friends and colleagues😂I find sitting in the sun a bit boring and I get hot and sweaty really quickly so I don't like going for a drink in a beer garden. Actually (while I'm admitting my shameful secrets), I don't like going to the beach either!

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 01/05/2024 20:00

I know exactly what you mean. When I was a kid at home, my sun worshipper Mother would insist we spent all day/evening in the garden on sunny days. Didn't matter if it was 38 degrees, we had to be out. Only allowed indoors for the toilet and to get a drink. All meals eaten outside.

All I wanted to do was get out of the sun and read my books or write my stories. I hated it.

Now as an adult that translated to me refusing to go out because I "should". I'll go out if I want, bug if I want to sit indoors for a whole hot, sunny Saturday and binge watch TV goddammit I'm gonna do it!

Freakinfraser · 01/05/2024 20:15

Who is telling you to do this op?

BogRollBOGOF · 01/05/2024 20:21

Who revived a zombie thread to moan about the second warm day of the year. Not hot, just warm enough to wear a t-shirt and sandals with jeans. 🤦‍♀️

No one's forcing anyone to put their hot chocolate aside, take their blanket off and frolic in a bikini all evening until it's dark.

PassingStranger · 01/05/2024 20:27

Every year we get all this as the seasons change.
Bring on the Summer it's been cold for two long.

LifeofBrienne · 01/05/2024 20:30

Zombie thread - and it wasn’t even that warm today!

I think I revived this thread by being the first one to reply to it in a year!

scalt · 02/05/2024 07:54

Summer? I’m still waiting for spring.

Katemax82 · 02/05/2024 08:08

I hate summer because of all the flies, not a day goes by without flies or wasps getting in the house
