Sister committing benefit fraud

ellie09 · 16/05/2023 19:53

I have a sister who has been with a guy now for a year. The relationship progressed quickly and he was moved in within weeks. She had a 3 year old from a previous relationship and became pregnant within 3 months and just gave birth.

He is living with them permanently and had a full time, stable job making around 30k a year.

My issue is that she is still claiming benefits as a single parent.

I work full time on 35k a year with a child on my own, having to pay full childcare and other things while my tax money is finding their living.

They don't live outrageously, but they have a much better standard of living than me. She's bragging that he is saving most of his wages in his savings. They live in a housing executive flat which is fully paid for with her benefit so he isn't paying any rent etc.

The two of them plead poverty, constantly asking me or my mum for a lend of money etc yet neither of them drive and he works from home.

I honestly wish they would get reported, and at times as a tax payer, feel like doing it myself.

I don't totally get it because if they are together that short of a time and not married the chances are they haven't got the stability for her not to be getting benefits-he's not the children's dad. He could walk away with his savings at any time

So they have the "stability" to live together and have a baby together but we should all fund her as though she is single? Come on. 🙄

Ah I read the op wrong, didn't realise he was the father of the baby! Sorry!

Poor kids.

This bloke sounds shit. Saving his money. And moving in with a woman and child he hardly knows.

Your sister has moved a man she hardly knows, in with her child and had a baby very quickly. She sounds vulnerable and/or thick and not fit to be a mother.

I wouldn’t report them but I would be concerned. I’d want to distance myself from such stupid people but would try to just be there because it will likely all fall apart and I would feel for the children.

I definitely wouldn’t be lending them money.

Are the children cared for properly @ellie09 ?

The situation - moving a man in she barely knows and almost immediately having another baby with him - sounds so much lile many of the tragic cases we hear in the news where children aren't safeguarded properly.

Oh stop whining OP, rent a room out and raise the extra money. Don't forget its taxable.

Tell me more about this "back to school payment" and free travel. I've been a single parent for the best part of 14 years and have never received them so I must be due a nice back payment.

OP, this is MN. You’ll get lots of protesting on this thread, telling you to leave her alone. Because of all these defenders if benefits fraud are at it themselves. Threads like these bring all of them out and you can always tell which ones are robbing the taxpayer because they defend other thieves vociferously or say things like you are mean for reporting someone or justify it by saying that it’s a drop in the ocean or try and compare it legal tax avoidance.

lkwhjis · 12/12/2023 06:47

Sound like your sister has found a lifestyle where having children with feckless men and then stealing from the taxpayer will keep her going for life now.

Why is everyone assuming the partner is a potential 'wrong un'? I'd be very surprised if a few weeks into a relationship he wanted a child. He's probably 'fathering' her other kids too. I think there should be a 6month buffer period where a partners income isn't considered but after that either you're in or you're out. The claim is likely in her name so legally she's responsible but morally they're both in the wrong.
Have you discussed this with them? I must admit, it would piss me off and I'd be tempted, but I think I'd own it and be upfront. Once you do take the moral high ground though you will have standards to keep!
