Annoyed when people say my name wrong?

ih8cg · 16/05/2023 14:59

When someone calls me and they say my name completely wrong. My name is so easy to pronounce - Christina. Just split it in two:

I just had someone ask if they could speak to Christiana.

I also get Carina, Catherine, Christine.

I get this a lot. It irritates the shit out of me. If people read my name properly they wouldn't come up with so many incorrect variations. I started ignoring any work emails that weren't technically aimed at me. Petty, but the culprits soon realised and now they get my name right.

YouWonJayne · 16/05/2023 15:43

I have a similar name and it REALLY bugs me it’s exceptionally rude.
YANBU

Neededanewuserhandle · 16/05/2023 15:52

My last name is fine if you read it phonetically however somehow a significant number of people make it into a different word in their head.
I have got used to it over the years, but it is irritating.

Neededanewuserhandle · 16/05/2023 15:53

By the way it's not Hunt.

LightDrizzle · 16/05/2023 15:59

My first name is usually spelt incorrectly and my surname is usually mispronounced but I’m just resigned to it and it doesn’t bother me.

It would bother me if I thought it was a passive aggressive persistent thing from someone I thought was trying to get a rise but it isn’t, it’s just people getting it wrong. People hear what they expect to hear a lot so if they know a Christiana, their brain may automatically go for that option.

I hope people who get annoyed steer well clear of yoonique or unusual names and spellings for their own children!

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 16/05/2023 16:04

This annoys me too. At work, I regularly get called a similar name that starts with the same letter. I keep correcting people but they still refer to me by the wrong name.

FastFood · 16/05/2023 16:06

People frequently get my name wrong and I couldn't care less.

EmpressSoleil · 16/05/2023 16:10

The only thing I don't really like is when people shorten my name. I never do it to anyone else unless they specifically say "call me such and such". I find it quite presumptuous. I don't like the shortened version of my name and never use it myself. But then I do just correct people if they do it.

mondaytosunday · 16/05/2023 18:55

Goodness I have the most bog standard common name and it's amazing how many people mispronounce it, and even more misspell it.

NailsHairNipsHeels · 16/05/2023 19:41

This winds me up something rotten. I have to correct them and call them out if they keep it up it's just rude

An even bigger pet hate is people spelling my name wrong especially when it's been spelled out to them or it's written in front if them. I even use a shortened version of my name to make it easier and folk still can't get it right

Zhougzhoug · 16/05/2023 19:44

I hate people shortening my name too, bloody rude unless they're invited to do it

Clarinet1 · 16/05/2023 19:48

I have a first name that is not the most common but by no means a one-off (think one other in my year at a large comprehensive school, say) and people still spell it incorrectly or use abbreviations which I don’t particularly like. My last name has possible variations of spelling at several places and, to some extent, I just have to live with it; Things have got a lot better since the advent of email though because, of course, correct spelling in an address is crucial!

Blip · 16/05/2023 19:57

YANBU to feel annoyed but equally many people struggle to get other peoples names right. My mother for instance often calls my dd by her sisters name - they start with the same letter. It's not intentional.

mastertomsmum · 16/05/2023 19:58

Growing up in East Anglia people pronounced my name Eeeelane and I sat next to Eeevon in History. Meeshell suffered this pronunciation misfortune too, the Beatles did not help! We also had a Leeowny in our year!

Spellcheck is not very helpful to this thread. Reminds me of when I had to email someone called Eliane, the machine kept correcting her to Elaine and then me to Eliane!

Yes! Written in emails is the worst! It's not bloody hard!

Crunchymum · 16/05/2023 20:07

Change the last letter and I have a totally different name (Marie / Maria or Christine / Christina or Julie / Juliet) and it's incredibly common for people to get my name wrong. My European clients tend to go with the wrong name mote often. I am guessing this name is much more common in Europe. I don't correct but my name is in my email signature so I know they can see it. 😏

mumwon · 16/05/2023 20:30

My name has an old fashioned pronunciation but the same spelling as another way so for years I corrected people eventually I gave up.
Nowadays I even pronounce my name that way .... frankly so long as people remember me I consider that a win.

lozrox90 · 16/05/2023 20:33

My name's Lauren and I ALWAYS get addressed as Laura in emails 🤦🏻‍♀️

SoAndSoSaidSo · 16/05/2023 20:38

That's an easy one to get right. Mine is always pronounced wrong. It's an easy one to pronounce wrong, so it doesn't bother me.
But yours is so clear on how it is pronounced.

I gave the opposite. I have a shortened name which is my actual name and so many people call me the longer full length traditional version 😡

Gtsr443 · 16/05/2023 22:16

Yup I hate it when people think I don't know how to spell my own name - or complete strangers who shorten my name .
But what really winds me up is being called "Mum" by doctors at my son's hospital appointments.

Lulu1919 · 17/05/2023 06:33

My name gets shortened the time at work ....i hate it

nicericey · 17/05/2023 06:35

I've noticed since teams people like to go for the shortest shortening ever of my name!

WandaWonder · 17/05/2023 07:01

I get this, there is only way to spell my longish name I think but people manage to change it into ways i never imagined

I am not bothered it more amuses me really
