Blinds no curtains?!

Am I being unreasonable to think curtains are old fashioned?

We have blinds and good double glazing. I prefer the look of no curtains. Am I being crazy or is this perfectly normal?

This is lighthearted so please 😂

We have blinds and curtains! There were just blinds when we moved in and even though they were good quality and properly fitted they didn’t sufficiently keep the light out early in the morning or the heat in during the winter so we added curtains in the living room and bedrooms.

We're having shutters and blinds installed next month and the designer is convinced we won't be putting curtains back up. But we will. No matter how good the blinds, light leaks through the louvres and at the sides and I live in the SE and dreading the next heatwave. At least having double layering will help. Plus, I love the look of curtains and they are easy to push back - our front windows are huge but there's no bunching when the curtains are pushed right back.

I do think even fully open blinds will reduce the (wanted) light but it will be nice to have privacy at last.

So it's not just about the look but what you are wanting curtains or blinds to do

You can do as you like and you are certainly not alone in preferring blinds, but the insulating properties of good, lined curtains cannot be denied and you should consider the money you will save in heating costs when you look at the cost of curtains. We have double glazing throughout, but my goodness you can feel the temperature difference, especially in winter, when the curtains aren't closed.

We have thermal lined blinds, as they are closer and flatter to the window they are much more efficient than curtains, in heat management.

RitaFires · 17/05/2023 19:17

I have a bit of both and I think it's really down to personal taste. I have foil lined insulated blinds in some windows, and they really make a difference to the heat in the room. I have wooden venetians in a bay window and pleated blinds that let light through in the conservatory. I have curtains over some awkward windows and I have curtains as well as blinds in some windows during the winter, I usually take them down in the summer.

We only have roman and wooden blinds. No curtains at all.
The back of our house is not overlooked so we have nothing at all on our bi-folds.

Blinds are better because if you can't be arsed to open them every day you can just leave them half open.

Yep, there's no way you can do that with curtains, is there?😉

There was a thread on here a year or two ago that said net curtains were very old fashioned and hardly anybody had them any more. Because I am obviously a sad old bat I spent most of the next week on my travels to work or anywhere else looking at all the houses and came to the conclusion that nets are still present in significantly more houses than they are absent in.

We have curtains and blinds

Mummyof287 · 17/05/2023 20:54

I think 'just blinds' looks rather cold and clinical (other than in bathroom/kitchen sink windows). We have just curtains in the lounge, and both in all the bedrooms (blinds because they help with the blackout and keeping in the heat in winter, curtains because I think they add a nice element of cosiness) I certainly don't think curtains are old fashioned! :-/

user50316 · 17/05/2023 20:58

In our old house we had just blinds which suited the house if that makes sense?!
But our new house suits curtains more than blinds (I sound mad don't I 😂) so I caved and got floor length curtains which I love

LesLavandes · 17/05/2023 21:07

All rooms in my house have full length windows.

I have matching blinds in every room plus curtains added in my bedroom for cosiness and extra darkness.

MarkTheHelper · 21/06/2023 10:14

In my opinion, yes, curtains are old fashioned, we recently moved and done the whole house in blinds and voils for the bi-folding doors.

InTodaysNews · 21/06/2023 10:20

It's a personal choice. Some people love curtains and some don't. Equally, some people love blinds, others don't. Some people like both.
There are lots of things that could be classed as old fashioned that some people still have and love.

I remember that thread! I went around our neighbourhood looking too, and there are some stunning net curtains around!
