Blinds no curtains?!

Upallnightfeeding · 15/05/2023 17:03

Am I being unreasonable to think curtains are old fashioned?

We have blinds and good double glazing. I prefer the look of no curtains. Am I being crazy or is this perfectly normal?

This is lighthearted so please 😂

We've got just blinds in our current house - I like the look but I do think it's colder.

DoesItHaveKosovo · 16/05/2023 15:12

I have blinds only in the reception rooms and kitchen. Curtains + blinds in bedrooms for warmth and privacy and cosiness.

CSIblonde · 16/05/2023 15:28

I like curtains but in my new flat the very tall bedroom window looks wrong with them as I can't have my bed or dresser anywhere but either side. I chose real wood off white blinds & it looks so nice. Also makes the room feel way bigger. Stark white would be too clinical. Dulux 'Timeless' white on the walls too, as its also v soft , sort of hazy, warm white

Depends on how good and effective the blinds or curtains are, I think! My unit has fairly ancient vertical blinds and I hate them (this is a rental so I can’t get rid of them). They don’t keep enough light or heat out, there are gaps, and they fall off their tiny hooks and don’t turn properly. I’m just glad the bedroom has a curtain rod, I was able to get a decent pair of curtains from KMart to improve matters. Curtains are my preference for the overall look, but I never have or will be in a position to install high-quality blinds anywhere, so can’t judge them.

Abra1t · 17/05/2023 07:45

Blinds can be fabric too. We have Roman blinds and they soften windows but can be folded up during the day.

bussteward · 17/05/2023 07:54

It really depends on the house! Houses on the Modern House for instance, all 1960s cool with MCM furniture, look odd with curtains – though sometimes a disruptor floral contrast works. My high-ceilinged Edwardian suits floor-length curtains. None of them cost £500 despite enormous windows: eBay is your friend here! We’ve got vintage Liberty prints everywhere against sanded bleached floorboards and white walls.

I do love solid shutters on Georgian windows, and the sleekness of absolutely nothing on a sash window at all – but that works better for a Pinterest board than in cold, neighbours-peering-in real life. Also fond of relaxed or swagged Roman blinds a la East London Cloth, if it suits the room and window – I’m planning to make these for my kitchen and bathroom.

But curtains all the way in kids’ rooms, hung wider and higher than the window, on a track which aesthetically isn’t my favourite but does cut more light leak, then a blackout blind behind. Then tin foil and towels and card and cursing at the sun and literally everything you can throw at the window to cut that light!

I like a bit of both, I think it depends n the room your considering and the look you want. I agree with a previous poster though, there are old style and fresher options for curtains.

i don’t think blinds are lazy, it’s al down to personal preference.

icelollycraving · 17/05/2023 07:57

We have shutters in every room. Simple, clean and easier to change the decor of the room rather than new curtains etc.
Personally don’t think I’d have blinds in a cosy room like a living room or bedroom but each to their own.

CoffeeCantata · 17/05/2023 08:00

Totally up to you of course, but I hate just blinds.

I've always been interested in textile design (William Morris up to all kinds of contemporary designers) and I can't get my head round why people wouldn't want to indulge in exquisite fabrics - and you can change them as your tastes change. I was fantasising yesterday about going for some Bloomsbury-inspired curtains...but it won't happen because there's nothing wrong with my current ones.

That's just my view! I'm sure people come to my house and hate my curtains.

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 17/05/2023 08:04

Love my Roman blinds. Have them in funky patterns around the house. The only thing I'd say is that this year with avoiding putting the heating on, I really noticed the draft. We had v expensive but very dated curtains before. Hideous but kept out the cold !

Iwantmyoldnameback · 17/05/2023 08:08

I think it depends on the style of the house, I don't like blinds on bay windows, also I think they can make some houses very dark.

Rainsdropskeepfalling · 17/05/2023 08:15

Those that love shutters - do they keep the cold out in the winter? And are they more or less expensive than curtains?

We have a roller blind and Roman blinds in our bedroom to stop the light getting in. The kids have Roman blinds and thermal curtains, again to stop the light and keep the room warmer. We couldn't have curtains in our room as the window is 3m, and one of our WFH desks is where my bedside table used to be so we couldn't have all that fabric bunched on the desk when the curtains are open...

There is absolutely no way you need to spend £500 on curtains - even if you have windows the size of Buckingham palace 😳😆 There are plenty of places you can buy cheap, nice quality curtains in all sorts of sizes, ours were a total bargain in the sale from Argos for £12 a pair! I love curtains. I think they make a room look warm and cosy and I find them easier than the faff of closing a blind. Like everything else you can get modern, fashionable curtains and ones which your Nan would have had… 🤷‍♀️

TheFlis12345 · 17/05/2023 08:20

We have blinds and curtains! There were just blinds when we moved in and even though they were good quality and properly fitted they didn’t sufficiently keep the light out early in the morning or the heat in during the winter so we added curtains in the living room and bedrooms.

Nat6999 · 17/05/2023 12:58

I'm having white wood effect blinds & curtains, blinds are okay, but curtains keep draughts out in winter & make rooms feel cosy.

Of course curtains can cost £500 and upwards! Especially if you have large windows and get them professionally made in luxury fabrics which are lined and weighted, they really are in a different league to Argos ready made curtains.

dontgobaconmyheart · 17/05/2023 13:35

I think it really depends - the home, the style of decor, quality of the blinds etc

I've got just blinds, no curtains and I go back and forth with whether to add a curtain rail and curtains in some of the rooms. I usually conclude it looks quite nice and clean as it is and goes with the decor but suppose feel I 'should' have curtains for some reason or I wouldn't keep going back to it. In reality I think they'd look a bit cluttered and potentially make the room seem smaller - plus would cost a small fortune if done anything approaching decently.

Curseofthenation · 17/05/2023 13:46

We have wooden blinds in our living room bay window and it looks great. It makes the room look more spacious. I warm the room up with throws, cushions and rugs. We have curtains over our French doors though for practical reasons and a combination of curtains and blinds in the bedrooms.

Divorcedalongtime · 17/05/2023 13:47

We have blinds and no curtains and my kids hate it lol

Well of course, I’m not daft but the op is suggesting they can’t do it more cheaply. Of course you can. It’s like saying you can’t possibly have a handbag unless it’s a Dior one.

RedHinge · 17/05/2023 14:01

I got rid of most of my curtains years ago partly to reduce dust. Upstairs are all blackout blinds and most rooms downstairs have blinds. The only curtains I have are in the living room and they are just decorative and never drawn.

Surely if you can be arsed to half open them you can spend a full 2 seconds to fully open them. What a strange comment.

I should have known the advanced concept of leaving them half open all the time would be a struggle for some people to understand.

Curtains can also be left half open, though, it’s not a unique feature to blinds?!

Wherethewildthymeblows · 17/05/2023 16:33

You can do as you like and you are certainly not alone in preferring blinds, but the insulating properties of good, lined curtains cannot be denied and you should consider the money you will save in heating costs when you look at the cost of curtains. We have double glazing throughout, but my goodness you can feel the temperature difference, especially in winter, when the curtains aren't closed.

Yeah but it's harder to tell whether blinds have or have not been moved.

I just feel like you have a bit more plausibility with half open blinds, It's harder for the curtain twitchers round here to tell that they never move.

Whereas curtains, if you left them half open all the time that would be a real talking point.

Plus you can't really see anything through half open blinds but you can with half open curtains.

Maybe it's a false hope and my cards are marked.
