In the cost of living crisis, things have increased in price, while value, quality and quantity has diminished...

So what do you think is worth buying, worth the investment in thew tough times items can be cheap or expensive, but must at least good quality...

For example m&s baked beans 50p a tin, cheap, but tastes better than more expensive brands.

Fairy washing up liquid is more expensive but lasts long and is overall better economy

@HopeSpringsInfernal I agree with the l'occitane shower oil it's divine. I would never have bought it myself, it was a suprise gift, but I'll buy it from now on. It doesn't lather up like shower gel but it's so soft and smells amazing.

I can't tell a difference between lurpak and own brand butter. Don't understand the hype over fairy liquid either. And I love cheap chocolate more than expensive ones! I ask for dairy milk or galaxy at Christmas and birthdays rather than fancy chocolates. 😂

The only food item that I will spend more on is meat and fish for the quality. Nothing worse than cheap meat.

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie
I read about these in a "best of" review a couple of years ago, possibly Good Housekeeping.
Tesco sell a brand called "Fox and Ivy" - I'm really pleased with them; I've just checked and they still have them.

Longley cottage cheese, Snowdonia Black Bomber cheddar

Also Longley Farm yoghurts! Longley are local to me, I kind of want to work there.

Pinkplasticbathcup · 15/05/2023 07:08

Elemis pro collagen night cream. If I ever stop using it and then go back onto it, I get so many comments about how amazing my skin looks.

IHeartGeneHunt · 15/05/2023 08:14

Piper's crisps and Lancashire Farms Greek style natural yoghurt!

SuffolkUnicorn · 15/05/2023 10:54

Agree with PP longley cottage cheese

sixthvestibule · 15/05/2023 10:57

Specs with an up to date prescription that make your face look just right.

@DustyLee123

I wasn't criticising your opinion on chocolate! I was replying to OP. Your post hadn't even registered with me!

As I like dark chocolate mainly, I haven't the faintest idea who makes Galaxy anyway.

Elodie09 · 15/05/2023 14:05

Yes to Pipers crisps, the ready salted have the best taste and crunch ever.
My luxury go to is Coco mademoiselle fresh moisture mist, think it is around £40 now but worth every penny to me .

Eurodiva · 15/05/2023 14:13

Marmite
Hellmans mayo
Heinz Baked Beans
Birds Eye Peas

Snowpaw · 15/05/2023 15:01

A good quality, heavy bottomed non-stick frying pan. I like the Jamie Oliver range ones.

GimmeSleep · 15/05/2023 15:07

Lidl cornish sea salt butter
Bacon & sausages from the butchers
Coffee beans

howhotisthedesert · 15/05/2023 15:09

Organic veg box. So much nicer than anything I can buy locally. Also good sourdough from a specific local baker, and eggs from a local farmer which are sold in a shops near me. All a bit more expensive, but not massively, and worth every penny

CaveMum · 15/05/2023 15:13

Elemis skin care, particularly their pro collagen marine cream. I never pay full price as there are always offers on somewhere either online or via QVC.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 15/05/2023 15:23

@Whattodo112222 I have some Patagonia base layers that I bought in 1996 and have been in pretty regular use ever since, apart from pregnancy. And an fibrepile lined parka (infurno jacket) that I have worn every winter for 22 years, including pregnancy! Such good quality kit, great business ethics.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 15/05/2023 15:25

Since all my nominations are pretty much all about outdoor gear - Darn Tough and Bridgedale socks.

FoodCentre · 15/05/2023 15:27

Chocolate hazelnut doughnut at Lidl

SouthCountryGirl · 15/05/2023 15:29

Shoes. I walk a lot as don't drive. Made the mistake of buying cheap shoes and got 4 weeks out of them. They usually last several months.

BashfulClam · 15/05/2023 15:31

Shoes, decent shoes. I grew up on a skint household and my shoes were always the cheapest of the cheap. Not comfortable or waterproof. I had sore wet feet most of my life, even as an adult I bought cheap shoes. Now I can afford to spend a bit more and it’s a revelation. I have decent boots for the rain and in winter, no letting in and most of all they are comfortable. I would rather have 3 pairs of good quality footwear than 10 cheap shitty pairs. My mum asked how much my boots cost and nearly choked (£85 on sale). She’d never spend that (yes I know I have the scars on my feet to back that up!’

Garethkeenansstapler · 15/05/2023 15:38

Pampers nappies
Aveeno baby bath (everything else irritates my kids skin), I also use the body moisturiser
We eat salmon once a week. It’s really expensive no matter where you buy it but I’m a big believer in oily fish as a health food.
Benefit makeup - I rarely wear makeup since having kids so it lasts ages, currently have the eyebrow pencil and the Fouroscope bronzing palette which makes me look really glowy.
100% cotton bedding. Synthetic bedding just feels horrible. I really like the brand Linen House and the bedding from La Redoute.

Garethkeenansstapler · 15/05/2023 15:46

Dwightlovesmichael · 14/05/2023 17:44

Same.

Dh does the shopping and insists on buying it as it’s cheaper.

I use the cheapest brand of everything else but this is just the pits. We go through three times as much so it doesn’t work out any cheaper.

DH drives me mad with his ‘cheaper’ alternatives. Lidl is okay for some things but not veg - it’s always a day or two from going off, sometimes already slimy in the bag. Yet he keeps insisting on buying the bloody stuff ‘because it’s cheaper’. Maybe but the money is wasted as it all gets chucked before we can eat it. He also buys horrible cheap bread which tastes yeasty within a few days, I just stick with Warburtons wholemeal or 50:50.

Ktime · 15/05/2023 15:50

Extra Virgin Rapeseed Oil.

Great for curries, better than olive oil which has a lower smoking point.

Noodles1234 · 15/05/2023 15:56

L’occitane almond shower oil
Waitrose baked beans (better than Heinz)
M&S everything food

meatyryvita · 15/05/2023 16:10

Sweaty Betty leggings - nothing else will do!
Proper coffee beans (we're lucky enough to have a roaster about a mile from home) and a bean to cup machine
President salted butter
Guittard chocolate pieces for cookies (the super cookie ones are the best)
Bonne Maman jams and yoghurts
Yorkshire tea
M&S food in general is fantastic

Talkingfrog · 15/05/2023 16:34

Branston pickle - it would be a waste buying a different one- I have tried a few and don't like them. Happy for ketchup to ne sainsburys own brand though.

I don't buy fairy liquid anyway- I don't like the feel of it on my hands. We did use ecover, but now go to a zero waste shop and refil so which ever brand the shop that we use sells ( we usually to to a specific one but there are a few nearby so depends where we are going).

Sketchers shoes- one of the few I find comfy at the moment- I definitely get my moneys worth from them.
