To think this DOESN'T need the hospital?

My daughter hit her shin on the trampoline metal part really hard. She is screaming saying it burns. Have put ice on it but she's screaming in pain.

AIBU to think this is one of those things that will go on their own? You can't break anything by hitting it can you?

She can't straighten her leg or move it. She's screaming in agony saying it burns

How could a doctor on the phone know if she's broken anything? That's what X-rays are for. I find it very hard to believe a doctor would say probably not broken, and I'll call back in an hour, as what is it to them to have a child sit in A and E for a bit and then get an X-ray? Use the hour to drive to A and E and check in! It isn't possible to know for sure, and A and E never mind checking out children and bones, it's their bread and butter, when I was last in there, half the people had broken/sprained/were clutching something.

This!

Having had several A&E visits erring on the side of caution I now wait and see (unless it’s glaringly obvious that it’s an emergency).

Posters saying it’s neglectful or spiteful are being ridiculous. Your child hurt her leg, you’ve done usual first aid remedies and it seems a bit better. A nasty whack like that can be painful for days (had a scooter winging round thwacking me on my shin that nearly made me faint from pain - hurt like hell for days), I’d see if she settles comfortably tonight, if she wakes up and weight bearing hasn’t improved get her to a minor injuries or A&E.

This reminds me of the time my friend refused to take her dd to the hospital after her dd fell off a horse. Turned out friend had had a boozy lunch, couldn't drive and didn't want to bother an ambulance. Took the dd next day and she'd broken her elbow.

FelisCatus0 · 14/05/2023 18:41

I fractured both of my feet on two separate occasions. Both of them I could still walk on it slightly. Xrays showed hairline fractures, both times. It simply is not true to say you are "in agony" and "can't walk on it at all" if it's fractured. Absolute myth.

gimmeme · 14/05/2023 18:44

Just an update - daughter is perfectly fine. She's had a bath, had dinner, walking on it. Still a bit sore but all good. Even the doctor said he doubts it's broken and no point hanging about a and e all night. Thank you to all of those calling me a shit mum - I'm not.

You called the doctor again?

lailamaria · 14/05/2023 18:46

if she wakes up tomorrow and it's really swollen i doubt op would take her to a&e even then i knew it was hopeless from the original post tbh

gimmeme · 14/05/2023 18:47

For those saying I didn't speak to a doctor/doctor wouldn't tell me to not get checked. Do you honestly think if a medical professional told me to get to hospital for my child I would ignore?

No wonder A&E is packed, with this level of hysteria over a bruise

Yeah you're right. I'd make her walk on it and force her to school as I really enjoy the thought of my child in pain.

I’ve had similar 111 call backs from a dr.
Not sure why people aren’t believing that - isn’t it a standard feature of 111?

Yes, so have I.

Does your love and virtual signalling towards the NHS trump the love for your daughter. Because it looks like it from here.

goingback · 14/05/2023 18:55

Well OP , you know there are only two responses to any medical posts

why haven't you gone to A&E? it could be serious
How dare you go to A&E? they are busy and you are wasting their time especially at the weekend.

glad she is better

Are you medically qualified?

TheChosenTwo · 14/05/2023 18:58

Was about to say the same as @goingback - you get called selfish either way!
You’re not a shit mum, we all have moments of doubt, no one looks forward to spending 11 hours in A&E regardless of the outcome.
dh and I are on two sides in cases like this, I tend to think let’s watch and see how they get on, he’s more a bundle them in the car and get to A&E RIGHT NOW type of person. It’s only actually been twice to be fair, not bad with 3dc (2 of whom have reached adulthood!). One time it was a break, the second time it was a sprain.
You’ve done the right thing by calling for advice and monitoring the situation.
Fingers crossed she has a comfortable nights sleep 💐

Ever heard of a hairline fracture? Depends on where the break is, what type of break and the angle of it.

Yes. And? It’s the tibia.

Have only been twice myself, also 3 DC, all now adults. Same one both times - needed stitches.

Poppinjay · 14/05/2023 19:06

My DD2 was pushing a toddle truck round the children's waiting area of A&E with a greenstick fracture of her radius. I nearly took her home before being seen.

It's not a precise art and I think it's perfectly reasonable to ask what other parents think before committing to an A&E visit.

anon12093 · 14/05/2023 19:11

gimmeme · 14/05/2023 15:45

Doctor on phone doesn't think broken. Said highly unlikely and he is going to phone back in an hour to see how she is.

How does he know? Does he have x ray vision over the phone?

I don't know why you're refusing your daughter help?

Godlovesall26 · 14/05/2023 19:27

Believe me I’m not an immediate ‘got to A&E type’ but in this case yes I would go. She’s young, and they will triage, worst case scenario wait ages. A fracture is completely possible and I would not take the risk, it’s not like you’re taking anyone’s spot because an X-ray is quick, and they’ll evaluate the necessity on arrival.
An additional factor is the GP will not be able to confirm anything without an X-ray, so that for me warrants A&E. Of course if you have a minor injuries unit go for that.
What really irritates me is people’s use of ambulances, that risks more lives than taking yourself to A&E and waiting.
Although given the time right now, probably couldn’t haven chosen a worse one for probable waiting times. I would go though, I’m not an expert in fractures, I’ve no idea if waiting until tomorrow would change anything.

Unfortunately yes. But it’s not like she just tripped, so I would go, it’s not like she’s going to take a newborn’s high temp’s place, she’ll just wait.
It is really hard this hesitation all the time now.
