To think this DOESN'T need the hospital?

My daughter hit her shin on the trampoline metal part really hard. She is screaming saying it burns. Have put ice on it but she's screaming in pain.

AIBU to think this is one of those things that will go on their own? You can't break anything by hitting it can you?

She can't straighten her leg or move it. She's screaming in agony saying it burns

Ive to A&E more times than I could remember to count (strict doctors orders, following an ICU stay, for about a year following at any respiratory sign), and for all the talk about people wanting to reduce unnecessary visits, it’s always the same, if anything waiting times seem longer (I usually go straight through, I’ve waited up to two hours last times)

(With no reduction in risk, just no personnel. Although to be fair two hours was the max and they apologized (there’s me thrilled then!))

Don't f*ck about, best get her down to hospital. She will need adequate painkillers which they can provide.

Best of luck.

gimmeme · 14/05/2023 18:49

Indeed

But it wasn't just a bruise. Your opening post says

She can't straighten her leg or move it. She's screaming in agony saying it burns

In those circumstances most people would take their child to A+E, as it's not a normal response to a bruise.

gimmeme · 14/05/2023 19:51

@Whinge not the case now though

You’ll be doubting yourself for a while though, best just get it done with tbh. PP have posted about hairline fractures etc, which is true (I’ve just changed fields and forgotten half my lessons!). But really just get it over with. At her age I had a broken elbow and was eating tea fine a couple of hours later, next day I was at the hospital getting regular fracture care.
Trust me I know the feeling about A&E visits you’re unsure about but have to do if you see my posts close above, I found it easier not delaying and getting it over with. Bc truth is without an X-ray you won’t know
Good luck, the situation is really awful with everyone doubting themselves, not judging at all

Yes. And? It’s the tibia.

.....You can literally fracture your spine and walk around. Yes, I'm aware of what the Tibia is dear, so again. Ever heard of a "hair-line" fracture?
Otherwise, you may be trying to imply that anyone that's ever broken their Tibia in the history of man kind has never, under no circumstance been able to walk on it? Ever?

Not to mention, discrediting someone's personal account. Rude much

In other words painkillers work well, especially for kids, but they’ll fade. I personally would be hesitant to keep her on them, overall just spare yourself the agony and go, if you’re lucky you won’t be there too long (I forgot in my initial message you would be at children’s A&E, I’m 32, so this time of evening in adults gets to prime time substance abuse issues, hated Sunday evenings

Admit I didn’t go a couple of times because I ‘felt ok’ although it was doctors (from icu) orders, at some point it’s so exhausting, honestly caused more stress wondering, so found it much easier to have a bag ready, Uber, and get it done

No wonder A&E is packed, with this level of hysteria over a bruise

The initial post said She can't straighten her leg or move it.
ANDshe's screaming in pain

Yes that sounds exactly like a bruise doesn't it?

Yes. Hope there won’t be a next time ( there always be at that age realistically) but you’d have got through quicker and if necessary had stuff sorted before bedtime.

gimmeme · 14/05/2023 20:12

She is still limping on it though I must say

Prolific bone breaker here. You can break a bone and not know. It depends on the bone and type of break.

My sister, in her teens, had an accident and got x rayed. They asked when she'd broken her (now healed) collar bone. She didn't know she had!

Daffodil92 · 14/05/2023 20:14

Op ignore anyone saying you’re a shit mum. You sound perfectly sensible. I have one stoic kid and one total drama queen and wouldn’t rush the drama Queen to a&e with a bruised leg. You’re following the advice of 111 which is sensible.

Whinge · 14/05/2023 20:17

gimmeme · 14/05/2023 20:12

She is still limping on it though I must say

It's now been over 7 hours since it happend and she's still in pain.

Given the initial reaction She can't straighten her leg or move it. She's screaming in agony saying it burns and the fact she's still limping, there's a very good chance it's more than just a bruise.

OP I know you don't want to go to A+E but your child needs to come first. If you had gone this afternoon you would have been home ages ago. Neither of you are going to get a decent nights sleep until she's been seen at hospital, so it's time to get off MN and take her.

I’d just go OP. Get a blanket and snacks and earplugs for her and hopefully it’ll go quick and she’ll miss just tomorrow morning’s school to rest

I know re spine. But that’s not the same.

the tibia is a weight bearing bone. You aren’t walking around on that not knowing you have a big problem.

There’s a chance it could go quicker than expected as X-rays won’t necessarily be in the highest demand as well
Good luck, and as PP said don’t feel guilty, we’re all doubting what to do health wise half the time I think.
(Take consistent snacks id advise though, waiting can definitely trigger hunger, comfortable clothing etc)

lailamaria · 14/05/2023 13:46

i think you're being needlessly cruel with your attitude towards your daughter, of course you can break a bone by hitting it against metal, and as for the walking i broke my leg and drove to a&e it killed and i cried the entire way but there was nobody else to take me and it would have been a waste of an ambulance, i'm glad you're actually talking to 111 though that seems to be an improvement to just leaving her on the sofa for an hour sobbing

Why would it have been a waste of an ambulance?! That's madness. Driving on it could have made it worse/injured it further which would have then required more NHS resources to fix (if your motive was trying to have less impact on the NHS!) not to mention cause you way more pain and suffering.

i think breaking your leg and having no way to get to hospital other than having to drive yourself is a perfect example of when an ambulance is needed and justified

Oh no doubt it would hurt like a bitch and ofc the risk of it rupturing doesn't bare to think about. But I'm just saying it's technically possible, just not often and it's not something you should be doing!

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 14/05/2023 21:03

You seem to be just like my mother was when I was growing up. Thank fuck I never broke a bone. She decided that I should continue walking on my ankle when I twisted it, I've had problems with it ever since (over 40 years). She waited a fortnight and tried 3 different types of antibiotics (she was a vet nurse) before she took me to the Dr. Blood tests are the norm for diagnostic glandular fever, my tonsils were touching so they did a swab.
The only advantage of her behaviour is, it made me more stoic with my own kids, but I also take them to Dr or a&e when necessary.

You’d still limp even if it was a strain. Doesn’t sound or look broken to me. Kids can be dramatic one minute and fine the next. My DD is opposite and when staying with her cousins she broke her wrist after falling off an E-scooter and didn’t even tell her auntie until 24hrs later. It was obviously broken too
