Coffee in baby chino

nousername2 · 12/05/2023 08:57

Long story short but I ordered a baby chino at a soft play place and before I gave it to her I tried abit- which I never usually do but luckily I did as it tasted like coffee! Asked the barista and she said yes there was 2 shots of coffee in there! She didn't seem to know a baby chino was just frothy milk. If I had given my almost 18 month old a double shot of espresso I dread to think what would have happened!

Will be tasting them from now on but just thought I'd put the word out there that babychinos may contain coffee if the person making thinks it's literally a mini cappuccino.

This woman was very young and I've emailed the place to suggest the staff have more training 😵‍💫

Whoa 😂 good catch. I’m very surprised that a soft play wouldn’t know this

Witchpleas · 12/05/2023 08:59

Same thing happened to us at a family hotel, thankfully I was watching them make it which I wouldn't normally do.

Sissynova · 12/05/2023 08:59

I doubt the toddler would have drank it so it’s fine.

I can’t really imagine anyone in a cafe putting coffee in them anyway, they’ve always been free anywhere I’ve been.

Although my husband did actually think there was coffee in a babyccino.

So did I! My kids are 18 and 15, they weren’t a thing when they were younger, so I didn’t know about them. My sister in law, younger kids, started ordering them, and then laughed at me when I thought there was coffee in them 🤣 I only thought a tiny shot!

MrsHsGirl · 12/05/2023 09:04

Omfg can you imagine 😂😂😂

shammalammadingdong · 12/05/2023 09:06

Well, a cappucino is coffee, and a babycino just sounds like a tiny cappucino. If it's just frothy milk why is called such a stupid name?

Mrsjayy · 12/05/2023 09:07

So they can charge yummy mummies a couple of quid for a few ml of milk, and so the yummy mummies have something to hashtag on Instagram.

PuttingDownRoots · 12/05/2023 09:11

Babycinnos were available 11years ago when my now Secondary school child was a toddler. Normal... hot frothy milk. And chocolate, with a bit of chocolate powder in. I remember Costa charged 50p for them!

Whatt · 12/05/2023 09:11

Babychinos are free in most places.
I always get one for my daughter, otherwise she will want something else and I will feel guilty.

I wouldn’t risk it, my DD swigged her dad’s black coffee as a toddler and it started an obsession that has yet to end 😬 she’s 8 and is allowed decaf now, she loves coffee. Tiny weirdo.

Wherewithout · 12/05/2023 09:14

Before I had kids I thought a babyccino was a mini cappuccino and I used to silently judge parents for giving their kids coffee 😂

Babycinnos were available when my young adults were babies. Back then they charged 50p ! Can't believe that the worker added coffee 😬
I've seen videos on SM of pupcinos 🐶 which made me laugh.

SummaLuvin · 12/05/2023 09:15

I love milk, so I sometimes order babyccinos for myself as they are so cheap, and the amount of times the barista has looked at me like "you know there's know coffee in that, right??"

cocksstrideintheevening · 12/05/2023 09:16

She probably thought you said cappuccino?

They are free almost everywhere, the most I’ve seen them is 25p.
Is it really so outlandish to give your toddler a cup of hot milk while you are out in a cafe also having a drink?

Really bizarre mindset that some women’s immediate reaction so such a basic conversation topic is to ridicule mothers for literally nothing.

Mushroo · 12/05/2023 09:16

Ha! My first job as a teenager was in a Waitrose cafe and a yummy mummy swanned in and asked for a babycinno.

As a 16 year old who at that point had just about got to grips with latte vs cappuccino I was a bit confused.

After a bit of back and forth I realised she just wanted a small cup of frothy milk.

Don’t blame the teenager on minimum wage for not being down with ‘mum’ lingo. Once you’ve explained it they will know for next time.

skgnome · 12/05/2023 09:17

I do know preschoolers that are allowed to sip on dad’s expresso…. But beyond the topic…
they have been around forever, when my 12yo was a toddler they were already a “thing” - my mum did thought they contained coffee and was shocked when she saw they were offered for free - I did explained what they were to her and she thought it was hilarious…
anyway, in a soft place you’ll expect they know better…

God you'll bash women for anything. It's fucking warm milk and predates instagram by some time. It's also free in most places 🙄

They're usually free. It's just a small thing to give a kid in a cafe Hmm

I agree - a cafe offered my son a babychino when he was really small. I had no idea what it was!

Incidentally, both of my boys bloody love stealing my coffee.

Pricks.

Jellycats4life · 12/05/2023 09:23

Was babyccino on the menu or did you order off-menu and just assume she’d know what you meant?

Because it sounds like she’s never been asked for one before in her life.

Lamelie · 12/05/2023 09:24

Reminds me of when I bought my primary school aged dcs a bottle of alcohol free Buck’s Fizz to celebrate the end of term. It wasn’t.
They were drunk as skunks 💃🎤🍾

Just because you weren't trained properly or didn't remember what you had been told, it doesn't make it the customer's fault.

Babychinos are called that because little kids like feeling special, and also because they get to have the 'same' as mummy. They wouldn't want 'milk'.

In a cafe, that's a pretty basic, day one thing to know. Maybe you grew up never having heard of oat milk. Working as a coffee shop person you should know that it exists.

I don't know how to make a Cosmopolitan or an Old Fashioned. But if I were a bartender I would need to know that on day 1.
