Coffee in baby chino

nousername2 · 12/05/2023 08:57

Long story short but I ordered a baby chino at a soft play place and before I gave it to her I tried abit- which I never usually do but luckily I did as it tasted like coffee! Asked the barista and she said yes there was 2 shots of coffee in there! She didn't seem to know a baby chino was just frothy milk. If I had given my almost 18 month old a double shot of espresso I dread to think what would have happened!

Will be tasting them from now on but just thought I'd put the word out there that babychinos may contain coffee if the person making thinks it's literally a mini cappuccino.

This woman was very young and I've emailed the place to suggest the staff have more training 😵‍💫

If they drank that and then relaxed and had a nap - they probably have ADHD.

If they did a Ninja Warrior style sprint, yipeeing around the place ... they probably don't.

Ooh I'm now wondering whether to self medicate my 16 year old who is under assessment for ADHD!

Thanks for dropping her in it. A babychino, shouldn’t even be big enough to hold two shots of espresso and milk. Everyone makes mistake, it wouldn’t have made the baby sick.

Giving ANYONE caffeine without telling them could potentially make someone sick. If someone has a heart condition for example it could cause major issues. Giving caffeine to a child is definitely more dangerous.

That said, the girl isn't likely to get in trouble - just retrained which is necessary because it can be dangerous. Everyone makes mistakes, yes, but rectifying and preventing those same mistakes from happening is how those mistakes should be dealt with. I work with allergens - if I made a mistake and accidentally have someone something that could cause anaphylaxis it wouldn't have been on purpose but the results could be devastating. The same goes for caffeine - if a customer asked me for decaff coffee and I accidentally gave them normal coffee they could potentially become very unwell.

There is no proven safe dose of caffeine for children

there's no prove safe dose of chocolate for children either. Or orange juice. There's no proven safe dose of anything.

We know that a small bit of caffiene doesn't do any harm though.

Unless that child has an underlying health condition such as a heart condition or a kidney problem, in which case it could be incredibly harmful even in small doses. If someone is ordering something that they have no reason to suspect would contain caffeine - like milk - then why would they even think to mention a health condition like that?

Because you're not ordering milk, you're ordering something that sounds like a coffee, in a coffee shop. If I had a child that would be so damaged by a sip of coffee, I'd be a lot more careful in coffee shops, wouldn't you?

I always wondered why I'd want to doze off in Costa or I'd sleep better after having a coffee before bed ... after realising that, in my late 40's that I've had undiagnosed ADHD all my life ... I now understand!

I read an article from a psychologist who worked in prisons and he'd do new inmate assessments and he'd ask if they'd ever used recreational drugs - if they said yes to cocaine or amphetamines he'd ask if it made them feel relaxed or hyper - if they replied with 'it made me feel calmer' ... ADHD diagnosis came next in each one.

@shammalammadingdong if something is on the menu - which in this case it was - then it should be sold as described on the menu. It doesn't matter how careful you would be, it doesn't matter how careful I would be, the fact is as a server the responsibility is on them to ensure that they are making the menu items as described, using only the ingredients that are supposed to be in that item. In this case - milk.

Would you be so lax if we were talking about a server adding peanut butter to a milkshake that was not supposed to have it in for instance?

I worked in a 'yummy mummy' area in the late 2000s. One of the chain cafes started doing babyccinos - I thought it was enterprising!

I have recently seen 'doggyccinos' on cafe menus but am not sure what is in those!

Holy shit.
This explains a lot 😂

DD who nicked her Dad’s coffee sat so nicely in the buggy afterwards. She’s now going through ADHD assessment!!

Doesn't it! I struggled to fall asleep and was always reading about 'no caffeine before bed' but coffee made me feel relaxed and sleepy!

It was only after realising that I have ADHD that it all started making sense!

I'm sure you'll probably already know this but, don't let anyone tell you/your daughter that having ADHD is a 'label' or a bad thing or they'll never do well... my youngest daughter is now 25, she was officially diagnosed last year (No behavioural issues - neither does my 14 year old son who also has undiagnosed ADHD) so it wasn't picked up earlier school won't support an assessment for my son because they say he doesn't need it because he's 'so good' ... don't get me started! You won't get any help YOU need unless you're a problem TO society)...

Anyway (can you tell I have ADHD? 😆) ... She has a degree, a masters degree and is a mental health therapist for young people. She's also dyslexic which was only diagnosed at uni (secondary school knew but said she wasn't bad enough for them to warrant paying for the full assessment) ... Yes she's had to try harder and work harder than other peers but, she's doing it and don't let anyone tell your daughter that she can't too or that she's naughty or lazy!

Of course it should, but shit happens and if you have a specific reason to be vigilant, YOU need to be.

If I had a peanut allergy I wouldn't order any milkshake made in a place that put peanut butter in any milkshake.

I have a child with allergies, we don't take it for granted that things are as they say they are, ever. Especially where there is much scope for confusion.,

Oh believe me nothing is going to hold this kid back. She struggles with dyslexia too but she is incredible. The way she thinks outside the box- human upgraded indeed! She is so amazingly charismatic, witty, confident and creative. She could draw better than me, including accurate shading from an imagined light source, by the time she was 5 years old. She can’t write but she draws extremely expressive and genuinely funny comic strips. She’s going places!

I love how proud you are of yours, it really shines through. It’s wonderful.

If you are sort of person who consider yourself a yummy mummy, you sort of leave yourself wide open to it.

@threatmatrix who did I drop in it exactly?

You do realise that a traditional babyccino has coffee in it don't you? Awkward. Will you write a letter of apology ?

Where are you getting that idea from? Nothing in my experience or anywhere I can see online says a babychino is anything other than milk, sometimes with powdered chocolate sprinkled on top.

Does it though?Are you sure?

WheelsUp · 25/05/2023 19:50

Babycinno does not have coffee. It is definitely steamed milk with some chocolate sprinkles so it looks like a cappuccino.
