Coffee in baby chino

nousername2 · 12/05/2023 08:57

Long story short but I ordered a baby chino at a soft play place and before I gave it to her I tried abit- which I never usually do but luckily I did as it tasted like coffee! Asked the barista and she said yes there was 2 shots of coffee in there! She didn't seem to know a baby chino was just frothy milk. If I had given my almost 18 month old a double shot of espresso I dread to think what would have happened!

Will be tasting them from now on but just thought I'd put the word out there that babychinos may contain coffee if the person making thinks it's literally a mini cappuccino.

This woman was very young and I've emailed the place to suggest the staff have more training 😵‍💫

totally off piste, but if you order a babycino with sugar free vanilla shot it tastes like a warm marshmallow.

Was babyccino on the menu or did you order off-menu and just assume she’d know what you meant?

Because it sounds like she’s never been asked for one before in her life.

It was a soft play cafe!!
A babyccino is not some secret off menu order.

I imagine she must have been new because I can bet the OP isn’t the only person to have ever ordered warm milk for her toddler in the cafe.

Just because you weren't trained properly or didn't remember what you had been told, it doesn't make it the customer's fault.

Babychinos are called that because little kids like feeling special, and also because they get to have the 'same' as mummy. They wouldn't want 'milk'.

In a cafe, that's a pretty basic, day one thing to know. Maybe you grew up never having heard of oat milk. Working as a coffee shop person you should know that it exists.

I don't know how to make a Cosmopolitan or an Old Fashioned. But if I were a bartender I would need to know that on day 1.

If it isn't on their menu, there's every chance they weren't trained for it or told about it, isn't there?

If the customer asks for something that is not on the menu, it is in fact up to the customer to be clear about what they want, and not assume everyone knows what they want.

Get ready for all the ‘how do you milk an oat??’

tiredhadenough · 12/05/2023 09:31

@Notamum12345577 my children are 17 and 14 and they were around for them.

@Lockheart they are a great idea as mums go in and the child gets a free drink so parents more likely to spend. You are paying nothing for a few mls of milk. You could splash out on a Chocochino for 50p and they get a flake with it 🤣. I remember some of my friends didn't know about it and used to get their 3 year olds a hot chocolate until I shared this.

Don't think they have it up on the menu but you can ask for it.

Wow this is so aggressive.

I definitely wasn’t trained on ‘babycinnos’ as it wasn’t on the menu and oat milk wasn’t an option offered back in 2007.

It wasn’t the customers ‘fault’ but neither was it mine! Why would a 16 year old with no exposure to kids know what a babycinno is?

A quick chat with the customer and all was resolved… 🙄

You wouldn't though, in many bars. You'd never need to know that. You'd only need to know if they were on your menu!

Sissynova · 12/05/2023 09:35

@Mushroo Why would a 16 year old with no exposure to kids know what a babycinno is?

You think working in a soft play is having no exposure to kids?

It’s a soft play cafe! There’s about a 100% chance they make more babyccinos than lattes.

Mushroo · 12/05/2023 09:38

@Sissynova fair enough in a soft play cafe, but if it’s not on the menu and it’s the first time they’ve been asked, they might not automatically know.

Eccle80 · 12/05/2023 09:39

This happened to me once too, it was a new cafe, and my then 3 year old said his tasted weird and didn’t want to drink it - turned out it was coffee! They have definitely been around a while as he’s 14 now and had had them enough before then to know it didn’t taste normal!

tiredhadenough · 12/05/2023 09:39

@Mushroo both my children would know as they used to have them growing up 🤣

Could have been her first day, first week. Maybe they aren't popular there.

MisschiefMaker · 12/05/2023 09:41

I've seen "yummy mummy" used as a derogatory term on MN so many times over the past week just referencing people doing normal things while out of the house (like having lunch or in this case giving their child warm milk) while parenting. It's unpleasant and sexist.

Myn · 12/05/2023 09:45

Well, I've never been described as a Yummy Mummy before who knew it would be giving my daughter milk that would get me the badge.

Newyeardietstartstomorrow · 12/05/2023 09:46

I thought Babychinos were a chain store specific thing, like Costa or Starbucks. My dc used to have them, but as a parent you have a responsibility to check the ingredients. Anywhere other than the whichever chain store coffee shop you check it is frothy milk.

Every soft play I’ve been to has been rather grim with a very basic cafe counter. So I wouldn’t expect the staff to be well versed in babyccinos at all.

Let’s be honest here, they’re far more accustomed to handing over basic lattes, Fruit Shoots and chicken nuggets and chips.

It's not sexist, if anything it's just anti middle class.

Do only middle class mummies give 18 month olds milk or something?

Of course it’s sexist. When do you ever see men ridiculed for getting their toddler a drink in a cafe and suggesting it’s all for Instagram?
The misogyny from other women is usually the worse. Depressing.

I've gone to cafes and asked for various herbal teas. The server if young frequently never has a clue and they are on the menu!

Milk? No. Steamed and frothed milk in a cafe and calling it a babycino...maybe yes!

I wouldn't guess there are that many men in Starbucks buying babycino's, to be honest. I could be wrong.

Ha! My first job as a teenager was in a Waitrose cafe and a yummy mummy swanned in and asked for a babycinno.

As a 16 year old who at that point had just about got to grips with latte vs cappuccino I was a bit confused.

After a bit of back and forth I realised she just wanted a small cup of frothy milk.

Don’t blame the teenager on minimum wage for not being down with ‘mum’ lingo. Once you’ve explained it they will know for next time.

It’s not ‘mum lingo’ though, they are listed on the menu in most coffee shops nowadays so staff should have been taught how to make them.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 12/05/2023 09:55

Babyccino.

I can't spell today, apparently!

Firstmonthfree · 12/05/2023 09:55

YABU for ordering something with such a stupid name.

Now if you’ll excuse me I’m off to Caffè Nero with FreeDog to get a puppucino 😝

Yeah I worked in various pubs and bars for about 7 years, and never made a cocktail in one. A “pale and mild” or whisky mac were the only things I had to learn, everything else was bog standard gin and tonic/rum and coke, or pints.

You don’t think men go out with their own children to a cafe?
