Coffee in baby chino

nousername2 · 12/05/2023 08:57

Long story short but I ordered a baby chino at a soft play place and before I gave it to her I tried abit- which I never usually do but luckily I did as it tasted like coffee! Asked the barista and she said yes there was 2 shots of coffee in there! She didn't seem to know a baby chino was just frothy milk. If I had given my almost 18 month old a double shot of espresso I dread to think what would have happened!

Will be tasting them from now on but just thought I'd put the word out there that babychinos may contain coffee if the person making thinks it's literally a mini cappuccino.

This woman was very young and I've emailed the place to suggest the staff have more training 😵‍💫

whynotwhatknot · 12/05/2023 11:58

iI it was on the menu i wold have cpmplained there and then to the manager-they should know the basics of what theyre serving

Don’t blame the teenager on minimum wage for not being down with ‘mum’ lingo. Once you’ve explained it they will know for next time.

This is not mum lingo. It’s as valid a ‘drink’ as a cappuccino or a late. I see it on the board of every cafe likely to have parents/kids pass through. Some places will give free with a full size beverage for the parent, others charge a minimal fee. The only places I don’t see it listed are city centre corporate only situations essentially where parents/children passing through would be the extremely rare.

Reminds me of when I bought my primary school aged dcs a bottle of alcohol free Buck’s Fizz to celebrate the end of term. It wasn’t.
They were drunk as skunks 💃🎤🍾

In the nicest way

😆😆

“Mum lingo” 😂

If you work in a coffee shop you should know what a babyccino is, FGS.

shammalammadingdong · 12/05/2023 11:32

They are not on any of the menus in coffee shops near me, although I'm sure any of them would make you one if asked.

I tend to go to independent coffee shops though, and neither nero or pret exist where I live.

(no need to sneer, btw. It was relevant to another comment, you may have missed it)

The local Italian coffee shop we frequent near a friend of ours serves them to our DD for free. (The owner is actually Italian. ) Due to the location 95% of the clientele are delivery drivers and office workers.

YABU for ordering something with such a stupid name.

Now if you’ll excuse me I’m off to Caffè Nero with FreeDog to get a puppucino 😝

😆

OctopusComplex · 12/05/2023 12:12

Apparently they've been around for 20 odd years, starting in Australia, which makes sense because 17 yr old ds had them as a toddler in Sydney.

All this bickering is ridiculous.

Attached is some info from coffee professionals.

What is a babyccino

I'm so fed up with people saying if they've never heard of something or doesn't exist, or no one should be expected to know it. The pride in knowing LESS is just so sad.

What is a babyccino & why do coffee shops serve them?

With continued discussions about when children should be introduced to coffee, the babyccino is a popular choice for many parents.

Well, a cappucino is coffee, and a babycino just sounds like a tiny cappucino. If it's just frothy milk why is called such a stupid name?

I thought this too. Its a bit like thinking baby botox means botox for babies! 😂

MaidOfSteel · 12/05/2023 12:16

Just when I thought coffee, with its many aliases, couldn't get any more pretentious.

ArianahX · 12/05/2023 12:18

I thought babyccinos are tiny milky coffees for kids... and I didn't realise they are free.

You learn new things every day!

Babycinnos were available 11years ago when my now Secondary school child was a toddler. Normal... hot frothy milk. And chocolate, with a bit of chocolate powder in. I remember Costa charged 50p for them!

My now 13 year old used to have them in Caffe Nero -- they were free!.

SparklyBlackKitten · 12/05/2023 12:25

Just stop ordering this rediculous baby chinos in the first place.

How ridiculous of OP to order something in a cafe that they had on the menu 🙄

I know we’re meant to find it funny and I’ll be called a killjoy, but if this is true than that’s pretty stupid of you.

Umm yes, I'm afraid I did find it very funny and wanted to know more. People don't mistakes and call themselves geniuses, no. But it can still be funny.

DH makes our cat a kittyccino every morning.

Actually he just tops up the remains of the frothed milk in the jug with water after he’s made my latte, and puts it down for her. It’s become a ritual, she comes trotting into the kitchen as soon as she hears the noise of the steam nozzle.

I'm trying to work out of this is satire or not. The only ridiculous thing is people not using the spell check on their phone to spell rediculous

Chattycathydoll · 12/05/2023 12:38

TIL I’m both a yummy mummy and middle class. I’ve been upgraded on the social food chain and all because my kid likes a babyccino 🤩

(they do a mean babyccino in our local Tesco cafe fwiw. Better portions than costa. Their actual coffee is disgusting though so it’s swings and roundabouts)

JudgeJ · 12/05/2023 12:38

Wherewithout · 12/05/2023 09:14

I thought they were free in most places!

Before I had kids I thought a babyccino was a mini cappuccino and I used to silently judge parents for giving their kids coffee 😂

They're 'free' to the parents, the paying customers are subsidising these parents!

That is adorable is that on the Internet any because I'd watch that ! l pass my.time by watching dogs getting pupcups 😃

Anoisagusaris · 12/05/2023 12:42

Babyccinos are perfect for kids in cafe. The alternative is often a glass of milk (too big) or a ‘fruit shoot’ type drink or a hot chocolate with marshmallows.

It was funny 😳
Doesn’t mean I’m not aware it wasn’t my finest parenting moment. It was 3% btw not neat whisky and they were 10/11 not toddlers.

Rosecoffeecup · 12/05/2023 12:45

How did they fit two espresso shots and milk into what i assume was a small cup? Every babyccino I've ever ordered has been very small

Yes! It's been a standard item for at least 15 years!

Teawithnosugarplease · 12/05/2023 12:49

It's a stupid name for it in my opinion.
Aside from being cringey, it doesn't give off a clear impression.
