To not understand why some women wear makeup to bed?

In conversation with my best friend she told me that her mother has always worn a face full of makeup to bed. I just find it crazy that in over 20 years of marriage her husband has never seen her without makeup on.

Surely this can’t be a common thing to do, I almost never wear makeup in the house if I’m not expecting company let alone to go to bed. As far as I know it doesn’t bother my DP.

I rarely wear make up since I've been on maternity leave. When I do wear it, I am always rigorous about taking it off. It's second nature, like brushing my teeth. If I wore make up in bed, my husband would be baffled and ask me what the hell I was doing.

weatherissweet · 12/05/2023 07:43

oh piss off with your ‘I just can’t understand this, can anyone else?’ 🙄

What on earth from this thread makes you think women are expected to do this? Do you really think men are at round the water cooler or at the bar going "cheeky cow took her name up off last night, told her we aren't having sex unless she's got a face full of makeup and don't even think of walking me up in the morning before your up, dressed and looking ready to go!".

They're not.

Some women are insecure.
Some women like it.
It's all a choice women name for themselves.

Choices are not made in a vacuum. I feel very sorry for the women who do it out of insecurity. No man is worth that. I think it is fine to judge that even in this day and age women will still put looking good above their health.

I would never do this but I hate these threads where people say they simply can not understand why someone would do something….what you mean is, you wouldn’t do it so you want to bitch about a woman’s insecurities and imply how great it is that you don’t do it.

Its obvious - they don’t want their partner to see them how they really look.

Absolutely this!
It isn't for you, that's fine...but having your "mind boggled" because she does something different to you does come across as "look how great I am and how stupid she is"

Oh good, the second comment said it so I don't have to.

I'm so done with the Mumsnet "I don't understaaaaaand", close cousin of the "I am always baffled by...." Are there really so many witless people on here?

For those who don't take their eye make up off, please read this;

I went for years and years not taking my make up off. I was too tired at night and my skin was absolutely fine the next day so it didn't seem to matter.

After years of doing this I started to get problems with my eyes that slowly became worse; very dry eyes, a burning sensation all the time, painful feeling of pressure in my eyes, leading to headaches etc.

Anyway, to cut a long story short my meibomian glands are damaged so I no longer produce the oils your eyes need to be healthy.

I've been having treatment for the last two years to try and fix the issues, including laser treatment and meibomian gland expression. (Where they squeeze your eyelids with tweezer type things to try and get the blockages out, painful!)

So with hindsight, I wish I had taken my make up off. Obviously, some people will be lucky, but just wanted to mention it.

I call these the ‘wide eyed’ threads - ‘I can’t understa-a-and why people don’t want kids / don’t drive / don’t have TV licences…’

There are plenty of things that I either don’t understand or think are weird, but I can accept that other people think differently and they’re welcome to do them as long as I don’t have to.

Having said that, I don’t see any of the women who talk about looking good for their DH saying that their DH reciprocates.

My husband is more Danny Devitto than Leonado Di Caprio, so he’d have a fucking cheek if he ever complained about how I look 🤣

They're a close relative of the "I Walk Alone" ones. Had a lot of those around the coronation. "I don't care at all about the coronation, am I the only one?"

Yes. On this noble, lonely path, you walk alone. It's only you, the lone ranger. You and the other 25 threads saying the same thing.

I’m just confused by those who do fall asleep in makeup - is it not all over your pillow by morning? What a mess and also my poor skin would be horrible if I did that D:

The damage to your skin from one night sleeping in make-up is over-rated. It's not great doing it day in day out but a single night won't do you any harm.

I wouldn't apply make-up to go to bed but I wouldn't beat myself up over not taking my make-up off.

DarrellRiversCriminalBehaviourOrder · 12/05/2023 08:31

The damage to the pillowcase is more of a problem. I had to get rid of one after a night out and falling still drunk into bed turned it into the Turin Shroud.

Yes I did wonder about the state of peoples pillow cases who like to sleep in make up… Foundation stains are a bitch, I once stained a really nice white top when I somehow smudged foundation on it when taking the top off over my head, the top couldn’t be saved… Was a sad day

God you poor thing, that sounds so painful 😖… I had no idea this condition existed, was it caused from wearing mascara in bed??

I knew wearing makeup to bad must be bad for the skin, I hadn’t even considered the eyes 😮

You don't ever wash your face?

Not sure how you linked not taking make-up off at bed time with never washing my face but this is MN 🤣🤣

One would hope 🤣

Although some posters mentioned women who just reapply makeup on top of yesterdays old makeup , so presumably they don’t wash their faces?? 😶

It would only come off on your pillow if you'd just put it on. If you put your makeup on hours earlier, it doesn't.
