To not understand why some women wear makeup to bed?

givemecoffeenow · 11/05/2023 20:56

In conversation with my best friend she told me that her mother has always worn a face full of makeup to bed. I just find it crazy that in over 20 years of marriage her husband has never seen her without makeup on.

Surely this can’t be a common thing to do, I almost never wear makeup in the house if I’m not expecting company let alone to go to bed. As far as I know it doesn’t bother my DP.

It's something from another era, that's all. When women were completely objectified.

When I was 18 I worked for a jeweller in Brighton who's mum was an ex-showgirl in London who worked part-time in the shop.

She told me that her and her flatmate used to get ready for the show the night before, doing all their hair and makeup, and taught themselves to sleep with their arms crossed, flat on their backs, so they wouldn't roll over in the night and spoil everything. They'd then get a 6am train to London the next day having just had to put their clothes on and pack their show outfit!

I don't understand how people can get addicted to coffee so...

It's a stimulate.

Wearing make up isn't,

Dallidalli · 12/05/2023 00:21

People then get clogged up pores, more spots and -you guessed it- apply more make up. The cycle continues. Each to their own it just gets bad when you actively despise your own reflection without make up that's when you know you got self-esteem problems.

It's sad people think they look dead without makeup ( me included I've used that term before)

Instead of smart casual Fridays how about no make up Mondays?

I’m very lazy. I wear full make up during the day and im too lazy to take it off at night. It comes off in the morning before the next lot goes back on. I don’t wear any at weekends unless im
going out so it isn’t about vanity or insecurity

Cripes!!

50% of the respondents on this thread so far I'm imagining must look like extras in a Marvel fight scene.

It takes minutes to cleanse your face! Simple Micellar cleanser is the best, and costs about £3.50 and it takes about three minutes to do!

Yfory · 12/05/2023 00:49

Ive never ever worn make up. Not even on the day I got married. Im not anti makeup at all its just not for me.
I feel really sad for anyone who cant bear to sleep without their make up on.

Even in my most drunken states I always wash my face, I think it's ingrained into me
Woke up from an operation and got Hmm face when I asked for my toiletry bag so I could do my skincare Blush
It's like not showering to me, don't feel clean without doing it

elm26 · 12/05/2023 01:10

Even as a drunk teen and early 20s, no matter what stage I was in I'd wash my face and brush my teeth. I'd feel disgusting if I didn't.

Can't imagine going to bed knowing I'm wearing make up and not caring about it 🤮

elm26 · 12/05/2023 01:11

State not stage!

SillyDoriswithaDangler · 12/05/2023 01:17

I can’t sleep unless I’ve done my nightly skincare, people that don’t bother taking off their makeup must have shocking skin!

BadNomad · 12/05/2023 01:21

Well, I can only speak for myself as a person who doesn't bother to remove makeup, but my skin (on my face) in fine. Not dry. Not oily. No pimples. I don't have any kind of skin care routine. I just wash it in the shower and that's it. It's probably genetics.

If I put make up on (going to work - don't want people saying I look ill!) then I don't bother taking it off at bed time. Far too tired!!

If I'm not wearing make up (quite often) then so be it!

You don't ever wash your face?

Mine too, I have really good clear skin with very few lines at 49.

I don’t understand people talking about the feel of make up in your skin. How thickly are you applying it if you can actually feel it!

I would never do this but I hate these threads where people say they simply can not understand why someone would do something….what you mean is, you wouldn’t do it so you want to bitch about a woman’s insecurities and imply how great it is that you don’t do it.

Its obvious - they don’t want their partner to see them how they really look.

This

Ladykryptonite · 12/05/2023 07:01

A bit like that thread about the 24 year old getting botox, but I think on an anonymous forum people are allowed to express an opinion

I agree with this. We now know that you're superior to your friend.

Buttonsandlace · 12/05/2023 07:03

I have cleansed and toned my fave before bed since I was 15. I am in my 40s. No matter how tired I am. I could not sleep without removing my makeup. By the end of the day my skin feels like it needs to breathe.

My dsis on the other hand barely ever removes her make up. She just reapplies her make up in the morning over the previous days.

Not at all. I use tubing mascara which can’t smudge (or be removed by anything other than hot water).

My skin is fabulous. I have a diet full of good protein and vegetables, next to no sugar, 2l+ of water a day, don’t drink caffeine, rarely touch alcohol. It doesn’t seem to like being messed about with with cleaners and moisturisers. 🤷🏻‍♀️

BriarHare · 12/05/2023 07:15

I don’t know anyone that does this.

People that do must be constantly changing their pillow cases 🤔

Depends on how they view it though. I’ve got horrible dark circles because of the shape of my under eye. And a lovely dealthy pallor to go with it, despite eating like a saint these days. I’ve always looked like death warmed up, even as a child. I’ve got mixed heritage and got the worst of all them. I am one of those people who is always asked if they are okay. I’m also one of those people who gets constantly told I would look better if I cut out wheat - I’m coeliac, so never touch the stuff!

I say I look dead, but it doesn’t actually bother me. I haven’t worn make up since I was about 19, I’m in my 40s now. I can’t be arsed with make up. And when I tried to wear it when I was younger, I looked like Pete Burns, I always cocked it up.

BadNomad · 12/05/2023 07:26

I think a lot of people have good skin naturally (or through lifestyle) which doesn't take any effort to maintain and this allows them to be "lazy". Whereas others are prone to issues so need to take more care of their skin. And others just do it out of habit whether their skin needs it or not.

Stressfordays · 12/05/2023 07:31

DisplayOrcha · 11/05/2023 23:38

I get my eyebrows dyed and have eyelash extensions so I don't look dead without make up though
I don’t get needles rammed into my skin or weird fake hair chemically bonded to my eyelashes but I don’t look dead. What low self esteem you must have

I'm a red head so have naturally blonde eyebrows and eyelashes. I look ill without it. Its a personal preference. I don't have needles in my skin at all, its dye.

ohdearmynamechangedagain · 12/05/2023 07:34

YANBU, OP.

In 20 years of marriage her husband has never seen her without make-up on? Wild. That's got to be so bad for her skin, and her self-confidence is probably beyond saving by now.

If it works for her then it works, but it's a sorry state of affairs.

This sums it up for me. Some women do things I wouldn't do, it doesn't mean they have terrible lives or aren't as enlightened as me. They're just doing their thing.
