To not understand why some women wear makeup to bed?

In conversation with my best friend she told me that her mother has always worn a face full of makeup to bed. I just find it crazy that in over 20 years of marriage her husband has never seen her without makeup on.

Surely this can’t be a common thing to do, I almost never wear makeup in the house if I’m not expecting company let alone to go to bed. As far as I know it doesn’t bother my DP.

An aunt of mine used to sleep in makeup because her husband thought she looked ugly without it.

That’s the saddest thing I ever heard, your poor Aunt.

How come women are expected to go to such lengths to look good for men… Like what are men doing to look good for their partners I wonder? 🤔

Women are not expected to do this. However would you think that? Have you not even read the responses.

I’m very much into skincare so the thought of blocking my pores with makeup overnight and not letting my skin breathe … For the sake of looking perfect for my man?!? … 🤦‍♀️

And yeah she take off the makeup she has worn in the day at night, cleanses her face and then reapplies a face full of makeup so she always looks perfect for her husband. My friend was talking about this like she admired it and like it was the secret to a happy marriage…Just boggles the mind…

Perhaps it is the secret to her happy marriage. Not up to anyone else to judge surely.

Also do people who regularly sleep in make up not have horrendous skin? On the drunken occasions I fall asleep with it on, I'm suffering with spots for weeks!

Nah. I never take my make up off (do it in the morning, when I wash my face), and my skin is great.
I rarely wear foundation, but do wear bronzer and highlighter powders, as well as concealer, blusher, eyeliner and mascara.
I used to remove it before bed, but then just got lazy about it, and havent done it for years now.

summerfinn · 11/05/2023 23:07

I wear makeup everyday and if I didn't take it off before bed I'd literally feel disgusting and smothered. Plus my skin would fall apart. I don't like the way I look without makeup but do have days and every night DP sees me without it.

I always had fake tan on my face when I was in a relationship, my brows & lashes dyed & a slick of lip balm on to go to bed, so I did look at least half alive when I woke up.

The question is, did he do the same to impress you?

If it was a he of course

SecretSwirrel · 11/05/2023 23:11

I sometimes just can’t be arsed to wash my face before bed but deliberately wearing it to bed strikes me as someone is incredibly insecure and also a little bit vain.

Also this makes me question the foundation of the relationship, looks over love.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 11/05/2023 23:20

I feel sorry for my DP sometimes. Today he was up first and I greeted him with mad hair and morning breath when I stumbled into the kitchen. By the time I was showered/dressed/makeup on he had left for work. Tonight he was working late and by the time he got home I had done skincare and changed into house clothes. (I did have dinner ready, so he won there!) I tend to make sure we do something nice together at the weekend (lunch/dinner out or similar) on weeks like these just so he knows I can look good and not like a complete fright.

ScentOfSawdust · 11/05/2023 23:24

I hardly ever wear makeup. If I do it’s usually only for the evening and I usually can’t be bothered to take it off before bed.

How is wearing make-up from, say, 6pm to 8am going to clog my pores more than wearing it from 8am to bedtime?

PermanentTemporary · 11/05/2023 23:33

It's interesting to see things in a different way, given that I almost never wear any makeup (and I look normal, not dead) it seems an incredibly depressing thing to do - but i suppose if you genuinely like the feel of it on your face, great. I get my vulva waxed which I know gives a section of MN the vapours so I'm not some poster girl either.

Noicant · 11/05/2023 23:37

Feels a bit sad really that you would be worried about your husband looking at your terrifying visage without make-up on. DH has held my hair while I puked in the toilet, scrubbed pregnancy puke out of the grout in the bathroom, checked my c-section scar for me etc etc. Isn’t that what people want? Dh gets the unfiltered version of me and I get his. It’s genuine intimacy seeing someone at their worst not just their best and thinking “I’d still choose you a million times”.

DisplayOrcha · 11/05/2023 23:38

I get my eyebrows dyed and have eyelash extensions so I don't look dead without make up though
I don’t get needles rammed into my skin or weird fake hair chemically bonded to my eyelashes but I don’t look dead. What low self esteem you must have

IDontWantToBeAPie · 11/05/2023 23:40

I knew someone who wore her makeup to bed and then reapplied over the top of it. She only took it off when she showered.

Whatever floats her boat. Her skin was fine so shrug 🤷‍♀️

savethatkitty · 11/05/2023 23:40

I only wear it to bed as I am too lazy to wash it off. Which I why I seldom wear it.

She didn't mention any needles. Dye is a cream not micro blading.

GCWorkNightmare · 11/05/2023 23:47

I think I wear makeup 360 Days a year.

I take it off for bed less than 10 times a year. I wash it off in the shower the following morning.

Sky still seems to be where it should be.

BadNomad · 11/05/2023 23:47

I don't wash my makeup off because I am lazy. I sleep on my face, so a full face of makeup would be pointless anyway.

It's not difficult to understand, though. In fact, if you wear makeup at all you should understand. Some people just don't want others to see them without makeup. This includes partners.

what are you on about?!

SleepingStandingUp · 11/05/2023 23:53

Yellowflowerr · 11/05/2023 21:15

I’m just confused by those who do fall asleep in makeup - is it not all over your pillow by morning? What a mess and also my poor skin would be horrible if I did that D:

See this is where I'm with OP.

I get that people who wear make up might occasionally be too tired to take it off, esp after a long day at work / night out.

But I'd assume that you'd need to change your pillow case in the morning and you'd wakeup with it smeared and not looking pretty.

And the not looking pretty is obviously not an issue, unless of course you're putting it on fresh BEFORE BED ESPECIALLY so that your partner only get the 'made-up' you in the morning. And made up as in makeup on, not made up as in fantasy before anyone gets incensed.

Noicant · 11/05/2023 23:57

I think OP is specifically talking about women who apply make up so their partners never see them without it no falling asleep in your make up (which is perfectly reasonable imo).

What on earth from this thread makes you think women are expected to do this? Do you really think men are at round the water cooler or at the bar going "cheeky cow took her name up off last night, told her we aren't having sex unless she's got a face full of makeup and don't even think of walking me up in the morning before your up, dressed and looking ready to go!".

They're not.

Some women are insecure.
Some women like it.
It's all a choice women name for themselves.

Shhhquirrel · 11/05/2023 23:58

I feel the opposite I don't feel like myself in makeup I can't wait to take it off

Why wear it then?
