Where we live businesses are sending fb messages to say that they are having to reduce opening hours due to lack of staff .. they are paying well above minimum wage ( £ 16 ph) , and are doing this to protect staff they have as they are pushed all the time.
the businesses that are sating this locally to us did not rely on pre brexit conditions . So .. what is going on ?

@Florenz I think part of that is because there used to be this unwritten contract that if you worked hard, you'd be able to feed and house your family, maybe have a few little extras, and at some point be able to retire. That's all gone now with the zero hours situation, ridiculous cost of housing and everything else and race to the bottom pension provision. The UK's pensions are among the lowest in Europe.

It has the same effect as collective punishments in primary school: if doing the right thing doesn't bring you anything positive, why would you bother?

Not difficult is it? Because they are asking too much for the wage they are offering. Boomers have retired and taken their economy and wage / living costs ratios with them. Suddenly all that stuff they forced us xennials to swallow about positive change shit is on the other foot, and unsurprisingly it was always a load of bollox built on the reality of power-based relations. They have made work not worth doing and now the new economy and new ratios cannot stand, it has no reality. Dont expect change any time soon though, it will involve the inheriting rich having to give something back.

Please fuck off with the Boomer hatred.

I don't think society has collapsed entirely but there are so many people, both rich and poor, who have completely forgotten that money is what you get when you work, and if you're getting money that you haven't worked for, someone else has worked for it on your behalf. So many people see money as being an abstract concept that magically appears in their bank every month so they can spend it.

What a load of shit. Plenty of poor people work hard for fuck all. Plenty of rich people do fuck all and get richly rewarded.

You just said what I said but much less politely - good on you.

that's how the wealthy get wealthy....they get the poor people to do they work & they take the profits!

I don't disagree with you but what you said doesn't contradict what I said in the first place.

To be brutally honest o do not work half as hard as a nurse, or a carer, or a cleaner, and yet I earn more. Have I earned that money, or am I just lucky? Is there any validation for someone to earn more money than they could ever use? Is one persons labour ever really worth more than say a surgeon? How can you justify banker salaries?

the whole system is stuffed when a nurse can’t earn enough to live within commuting distance of their place of work

Dis626 · 15/05/2023 19:20

Brexit and Covid are the main factors. No new people coming in and lots of people left and /or decide to stop work.

Covid yes, and it’s happened in other countries but no new people - net migration isn’t lower

Florenz · 15/05/2023 19:23

A banker's salary can be justified in that their works earns their employer many times their salary. Banking is one of the most purely meritocratic sectors there is, far more so than the media who moan about inequality and nepotism etc but are mostly staffed by private educated people who have family connections.

I think schools need to teach kids more about careers and what they can expect their earnings to be. It's no good telling kids to follow their dream and waste years of their life trying to get into industries that are mostly closed off, they might as well be cutting hair or laying bricks and earning a living at 18 instead of being in their mid 20s (or older) with £50k+ of student debt build up and disillusioned when they end up working in a call centre despite having a degree.

pointythings · 15/05/2023 19:44

Meh. That's the voice of someone who knows the cost of everything and the value of nothing. And if you think there isn't massive nepotism in banking, you're naive.

Bankers caused the global financial crisis because of their greed. I have zero respect for them. I respect the healthcare assistants on the wards where I work, the paramedics who go into all kinds of situations to save lives, the builders who build our houses, the people who build and maintain our roads. I respect the people working in hospitality who put up with rude, drunk punters and still do their jobs. Bankers? Hell no.

merryhouse · 15/05/2023 20:14

Just like to say that I applied for cleaning retail and hospitality jobs and never got so much as a sniff of an interview... so employers obviously aren't THAT desperate.

Florenz · 15/05/2023 20:19

People had to invest their money with the banks to give the bankers money to lose.

Banks that indulge in nepotism tend to fail.

The government should not have bailed banks out. Businesses that are run badly should be allowed to fail, otherwise there is no incentive to run businesses properly.

Shhh - half of Mumsnet is on one kind of benefit or another. It's all money stolen from other people via taxation and/or printed government debt.

Perhaps you could tell that to the previous poster who was lauding all the money that bankers "earn" for their banks?

Florenz · 15/05/2023 20:45

Bankers that earn money for their banks deserve to be paid a hefty salary.

But banks that lose money should be left to fail, with all that entails. Including investors losing their money.

People should do their due diligence before investing their money with a bank.
