Why are there so many job vacancies??

Where we live businesses are sending fb messages to say that they are having to reduce opening hours due to lack of staff .. they are paying well above minimum wage ( £ 16 ph) , and are doing this to protect staff they have as they are pushed all the time.
the businesses that are sating this locally to us did not rely on pre brexit conditions . So .. what is going on ?

There are lots of jobs available where I live but they’re all minimum or living wage, not £16/hour.

Ginmonkeyagain · 11/05/2023 17:24

Mr Monkey works in specialist retail (running) and they are really struggling for staff at the moment.

One of the challenges they have is, due to it being retail, staff need to work at least one weekend day (they get a full weeknd off every month). People just don't want to do that.

ohtowinthelottery · 11/05/2023 17:26

Definitely not seen any £16ph jobs around here. Most vacancies are carer/hospitality/retail paying just over NMW and they want long hours or flexible working which often doesn't suit those with children.

The few admin jobs I've seen advertised have a list of requirements as long as your arm that I doubt many could meet nor would they want to for £21k pa.

itsmylife7 · 11/05/2023 17:26

Probably the type that want you to work 0 to 8 hours over a 7 day period.
In other words put your life on hold week by week as you've no idea what hours or days you'll be working.

These companies need to go back to set hours and days contracts.

A fruit farmer near us has ploughed in a couple of acres of strawberries. Pre Brexit it was easy to get seasonal staff (and he was known for treating them well and providing good quality accommodation). Now he can't get anyone to do the work.

These farms should advertise for 'pick your own'. This is what happens in my home country, you can pick crates and creates of things cheaper than supermarket prices. But here ' pick your own' in a little kids entertainment where most people pick 2 punnets of berries at supermarket prices.

I also think a lot of places want someone with experience instead of hiring someone they need to train.

3BSHKATS · 11/05/2023 17:28

I've just turned one down today, 5 days in the office, I can't/won't do it. Employers need to realise the tide has turned it's not going back. Would have been a £10,000 payrise but after tax, NI and petrol and wear and tear on my car, no thank you

I love when strawberry fields do this in the summer… And the produce tastes so much fresher. This is such a good idea!

3BSHKATS thats. Ridiculous ! Turning a jib down just because you have to benin an office .
what about all the nhs staff .. are they supposed to demand they can work from home? How entitled .

I agree @itsmylife7 , it should be set hours that people can apply for.

FrostyFifi · 11/05/2023 17:38

Brexit. We've locked out all the people who would have taken those roles.

sewerrat · 11/05/2023 17:38

because its easier to be unemployed and have everything paid by the tax payer!

Didtheythough · 11/05/2023 17:39

Why is it entitled? She already has a job (by the sound of it) and doesn't want to do a different one that involves 5 days in office, as it would cost more making the £10k increase less in real terms and devalue their lifestyle. What's the problem? (If it was a choice between benefits and a job my answer world be different).

It’s not entitlement, it’s the reality of people no longer wanting to give up 90 minutes or more of their day plus the cost of maintaining a car, petrol, and parking, just to get to work, when the last three years have demonstrated many can do their job from home without issue. Office based employers that don’t offer a degree of hybrid working are going to lose out on a lot of candidates.

Well quite
I'm not unemployed ffs.
I'll run my life as I see fit if that's ok (rolls eyes)

Nofrillop · 11/05/2023 17:40

Don't worry, brexit will fix it. 🎊

Tree543 · 11/05/2023 17:40

Exactly this. There are a lot of cleaning/hospitality near me but usually a bit above min wage. Admin jobs want loads of relevant experience of the exact industry but only paying £11 ph.

One of the great advantages of Brexit along with soverignty and taking back control of our borders is that all those foreign workers depressed wages and so now there is a shortage of workers we are seeing consistently above inflation pay rises.

You think a person with a job must be forced to accept a different job even if they don't want it? Why?

talkingdeadscot · 11/05/2023 17:44

Employers want;

full flexibility with no guaranteed hours
fully trained and ready to go whatever the position
buy your own uniform
pay for any needed certificates yourself
degrees even for the basic jobs
jumping through hoops for interviews
recent references
full job history (no chance if you've had to have time out)
full health
preferably under 25 in order to pay lower wages

All for near enough minimum wage. I know I'm exaggerating a bit but it does feel like this a lot of the time. What can employers do to attract staff instead of wingeing they can't get anyone?

SunnyEgg · 11/05/2023 17:44

sewerrat · 11/05/2023 17:38

Is it? Bit tricky if so

Conkersinautumn · 11/05/2023 17:46

Where? The only work locally is very much lower wage but also mandatory evening's or weekends which I cannot do because my partner does very unpredictable hours and his working week starts on a Sunday. Also as I'm pushing 50 I'm literally getting sneered at when they talk about enthusiasm. They obviously feel as employers that they've got endless choice.

MidnightMeltdown · 11/05/2023 17:48

I think that the older generation were able to work for lower wages because they bought their houses years ago when they were cheap and so they have little or no mortgage.

Now this generation is starting to retire and young people can't afford to live on the same wages. Wages need to rise significantly.

Usernamen · 11/05/2023 17:50

The main reasons have already been mentioned.

The other thing that’s changed in the last few years is there’s now a whole host of new jobs that particularly young people do which means they’re not filling up retail and hospitality roles. Such as ‘life coach’, ‘breathwork coach’, and ‘sound/gong bath healer’ (these are just the ones I know from people I follow on Instagram).

This is in addition to all the side hustles that people are increasingly making their main hustle, like selling vegan skin care or soy candles.

Hadroncollideer · 11/05/2023 17:50

There may be lots of retail jobs near buzzy cities where most of the shops are still going, not so in the town where I live and the high street is dying on its arse.
As a teen it was always easy to get a pt / holiday job, not so easy for the teens i know now.

Manyanaish · 11/05/2023 17:52

It sounded entitled to me .. in that many people have to be at work .. what makws someone so special that they feel work has to work round them . ? How do you think that sounds to supermarket workers, paramedics etc ?
