Grey hair really getting me down

ok, I know it’s pure vanity and grand scheme of things 1st world problem but I cannot explain how much having my hair like makes me feel so embarrassed.

im turning 40 in a couple of weeks and recently had a few major life changes so everything feels very ‘a lot’ at the minute.

This picture shows 6weeks hair growth. Usual appointment costs £90 without cutting just to blend roots & a few highlights. I cannot afford this due to COL and I have an inkling my hairdresser is going to put her rates up, which I totally understand.

how can I mentally let go of worrying about having grey hair? How can I embrace it?
I’ve looked online and seen some really funky grey styles, but I’m definitely not ‘funky’ enough to carry them off.

Aibu for being so vain it actually has made me cancel plans for this weekend because of it?

I know I am, but please tell me some positive grey hair late 30s / early 40s stories. Thanks

I agree I certainly wouldn’t be dictated to by a hairdresser who will not do what I would be paying her to do, mines wonderful and she will advise but would never be so rude as to refuse to do my hair if I’d used box colour, I’ve used box colours for over 50 odd years, loving my grey coming through as I said I’ve only been doing this for 5 months, @Silverparting yours is lovely colour, and certainly doesn’t age you, mine should all be through in hopefully 4 more months having mine cut ever four weeks to keep my bob in shape as it commences

@Silverparting you've got a very young face and your hair looks lovely. I'm 50 with jowls and a lot of wrinkles so I'm not brave enough to stop dying my hair yet.

Thanks to everybody for your nice comments.
I think my shade is so light as it has taken a while to perfect - 30 years - as I have had grey hairs since 19 and dyeing since my mid 20s.

The B12 theory is interesting, but it's hereditary for me. Both my parents and brother went grey very early too.

Somebody mentioned they would feel too frumpy to pull of a funky look, but here's the best bit for me.

Prior to the silver I was heavier, with an orange dye job and an uninspired wardrobe. Growing out the grey actually boosted my confidence and gave me a style a refresh. I felt so stuck before, so perhaps there will be a 'silver lining' for you too if you decide to embrace the grey.

I posted about this just over 2 years ago (if anyone wants to see my original post about embracing the grey) and it was the wise posters on MN who inspired me to grow it out, so hoping others may see it can be quite liberating.

I use the root touch ups by nice n easy. £5 a box, I have to do it around every 2 months.
Or you can buy the L'Oréal sprays to temporarily cover it

Oh shoot, just seen your reply on root touch up & L'Oreal 😂

Mine shoulder length. Balayage was som my hairdresser did as it grew out which helped. Now completely grey with shots of white at the front. Purple shampoo makes it glow DS says I'm a silver fox now 😂

I can't use hair dye any more due to a recent allergic reaction so I now wear wigs. They are easy,(I don't bother with caps etc I just use a suede head band underneath) I never have a bad hair day and I can change the colour everyday if I want. Cheaper than salon visits too.

This is so interesting. Are they hot to wear and have you had any fly away disasters? I can imagine mine flying off playing squash!

I think you need a new hairdresser who understands if you use root touch up between visits as It's a perfectly normal thing to do.
