Honest answers please

would you give a woman (maybe Muslim maybe Jewish) a wide berth if you saw them wearing a burkini or modest (Ie fully covered) swimsuit at a pool?

if you see a woman wearing one do you give it a second thought or is it just a meh, who cares?

I don’t see the issue with it nor would it bother me.

I think it’s ridiculous anyone has an issue with it and think it’s either out of a place of ignorance or stupidity. It’s the same material as a swimsuit and doesn’t look that much different then a wetsuit.

If you don’t like it, don’t wear it. Simple.

Guavafish1 · 07/05/2023 21:41

Women must have a choice in how they dress.

ArcticSkewer · 07/05/2023 21:41

The French don't allow long board shorts. Is the xenophobia as well? They are just pretty strict around rules on fibres in the pool and anything that could be worn beyond the pool then worn in it as well.

I'd also like us to be more German and make everyone shower before swimming, and between sauna and pool, but again it's not the British way to worry about hygiene.

Opinions are just that, op. Sometimes they are a bit irrational, sometimes you might disagree, that's just the nature of them. I'm not stopping you wearing your costume, nor do I agree with people commenting to your face or in hearing distance (unless you ask of course). But ask and I'll tell you my personal opinion.

Anyway, that's me done on the subject as it's not that exciting. I'm sorry you were upset today. If you don't want to know what people secretly think, better not to ask, but it was very rude of them to speak aloud.

I would have no issues with the individual woman wearing it.

I do have an issue with cultures that make women feel they have to cover up like that while men get to wear swim shorts.

I agree, but I also have issues with cultures that make women feel they have to wear tight crotch hugging swim wear while men get to wear swim shorts.

I probably would look if I saw a women in a burkini because I don't see many and would be interested for potentially wearing something like that myself, but I'd try to do it subtly to not make the woman wearing it feel stared at.

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 07/05/2023 21:41

I also bet a lot of people insisting on how much better and hygienic bikinis are , would also caveat that the wearer is fully shaved armpits/bikini area/legs etc. otherwise it's just minging.

Maybe that's the real reason and fear. The horror that might hide under it and not available for public scrutiny and judgement.

WhisperingAutistic · 07/05/2023 21:41

I remember seeing a group of muslim women in the swimming pool in Spain in the 90s, wearing their normal clothes. They must have been so uncomfortable, so I'm glad there are swim suits they can now wear.
If i saw you, I'd notice because my area isn't diverse whatsoever. I'd smile and you and say hello though Smile

Thanks ladies!

i just had the most awful experience at a public swimming pool with my kids today, first time I’ve taken them in the UK normally hubby does. Dirty looks, head shakes, and very audible comments from a few ladies.

I’d wanted to go every week for some healthy family fun, and it’s a very nice pool, lovely splash area but truthfully was a bit iffy on going back.

So I was going to say something along the lines of ‘I’d notice it’ but ‘wouldn’t bother me’ bla bla. But what you’ve described here is completely unacceptable and not at all what I’d expect or how anyone should behave. I’m really sorry you’ve experienced that, please don’t let it stop you enjoying the pool with your family in future!

We have a few ladies at our women's swim who wear full suits and head covers. I often wonder how heavy it gets when wet and whether it restricts your ability to swim. But that's about it.

It doesn’t, it’s just the same. Only gripe was the one from Lyra had poppers between the legs on the costume bit, super annoying

I swam in a river in flared jeans and a tank top. Impromptu swimming session and I didn't want to miss out or was confident enough to just be in my underwear.

It was a pain in the butt and required more effort but still quite doable and enjoyable.

polkadotdalmation · 07/05/2023 21:44

Not at all. Friend of mine wears one.

ArcticSkewer · 07/05/2023 21:45

Kanaloa · 07/05/2023 21:36

Oh great. As well as unstylish, badly behaved, and grotesque, the British are now dirty. Absolutely ridiculous. And conflating wearing modest swimwear with somehow being unhygienic is just bizarre.

The Brits are renowned for poor hygiene it's not an 'and now' thing.

OneFrenchEgg · 07/05/2023 21:46

@Sailingaround is your point that some women feel pressured to wear revealing clothes to please men? That would be across a wide range of cultures and countries, and I'm not sure I agree - I think women wear clothes for other women a lot. I agree social media is toxic.
I can hold more than one thought, and a cultural value placed on women covering up while their sons, husbands, fathers don't have to us not one that I can respect. I respect the people within it though, and I certainly would not try to make op or others feel uncomfortable or unwelcome in any way.

I’m not actually sure either are banned in France you know. I’ve been there on hols several times (once to Disney and another to an eu centre parcs and then other hotels with pools and the largest water park in France) and my husbands wears long board shorts and I a burkini, no one said anything so I’m not sure they are banned

And how is the burkini made of swimsuit material dirty? Can you explain that please?

I think what a shame, that they are bowing down to what a man says, when a man can do what they want.
They are agreeing to be treated like a second class citizen, men and women are equal.

I'm glad it's not me. It's time they came out of the dark ages.

why is it living in the dark ages to not want random men to look at my body?

Wishawisha · 07/05/2023 21:52

I’ve never seen one which is surprising I suppose as I swim a lot and live in London. So because of that, I would notice, but it wouldn’t bother me unless my DC asked me about it, although honestly I’m not sure they would notice / care.
I think if the DC asked I would struggle to come up with a truthful, fair answer that I was comfortable to give (in the sense of, why women are told to cover their bodies but men aren’t etc).

Yeah, mens swim shorts are banned in many private pools. Some very touristy places that get a lot of tourist/Brits in particular do allow them. I can see Disneyland/waterparks being okay with it, but most places you need to read the rules before booking the resort.
The lifeguards won't let men swim in them at municipal pools as they are not allowed.

underneaththeash · 07/05/2023 21:54

I think the whole coveting up for men thing is weird, but I’d much rather women/girls wore them that didn’t swim at all.

mbosnz · 07/05/2023 21:54

I'd be happy that they were wearing something that meant they could swim.

Neverquitehappy · 07/05/2023 21:54

Is it your choice to wear it OP? I would look twice because it would be unusual and being totally honest my initial reaction would be is she made to wear that or does she actually want to? & will that little girl be made to wear the same thing when she’s older?

It’s hard to know when I think there is a whole spectrum? Certainly wouldn’t be rude to you though, I think any woman should be able to wear what she wants without judgment. (including arse cheeks out if she so wishes!)

Terven · 07/05/2023 21:55

I don’t care. I use modest swimming wear myself.

WashAsDelicates · 07/05/2023 21:56

*Haha no if you think swimming in your day clothes is not minging, you carry on. It isn't something I am overly invested in, I just avoid places that let people do it, as I have higher standards of hygiene.

As for burkinis (made of actual swim material) I'm not a fan, and do consider them mildly unhygienic*

Burkinis are not day clothes.

What makes them 'unhygienic'? The only way they are different to a bikini is the amount of fabric and coverage and lack of underwiring. So is it the coverage that makes them 'unhygienic'? Are swimsuits therefore inherently more 'unhygienic' than bikinis? What sort the ones with extra fabric in the tummy control panels? Or maternity swimsuits? How low cut do you permit a swimsuit to be in the leg before it becomes 'unhygienic'?

'Unhygienic'. What prejudiced nonsense.

Mumsanetta · 07/05/2023 21:57

I might take a very discrete look out of curiosity but no, of course it wouldn’t bother me. If I had a child who burned in the sun I would stick her in a burkini! Wasn’t Nigella Lawson pictured wearing one?

I’m sorry you had that experience today @Mvslimah. Some people really are cunts.

Eagerly awaiting the explanation as to why a burkini is unhygienic.
